I'd love to see you post pics again, unfrumped! Always welcome to, and remember that my forum is extremely private. New people signing up who are not grandfathered into our system like yourself have to pay to become members. And non-members cannot see pics or participle on the forum. This keeps the riffraff away, so rest assured :)

I remember that you have a long neck and shorter hair, so it makes sense that you liked the coverage of collars as the underlayer. Also, they were not white, which helps.

As LJP mentioned, wearing a white tee as a visible layer has a sporty integrity. Works well when you incorporate sneakers that have some white in them. This is not where you want to land, by the sounds of it!

Last, sounds like you prefer wearing outfits that are not too dark head-to-toe. Me too! Follow those feelings until you feel like a change :)

I recently heard about the "slice of white" on Bridget Fisher's YouTube channel. She also mentioned wearing the shirt backward.

I am not sure it would work for me. Sometimes those "bright white" accents work best on rock stars--like how Michael Jackson wore white socks with black dress shoes. Now imagine Trump or Biden doing that!

I wear a fitted white t under some of my sweaters and quite like the look. It is, however, decidedly casual-looking to my eye. It works for me to wear to work and on weekends, but I doubt I'd do it for any kind of social occasion (what are those, lol ) as it reads athletic-inspired.

Jenni NZ, thanks. I did shift away from posting photos, for various reasons. I know that leaves a lot to the imagination.

Roberta - good point. The ‘ tubers refer to them as muscle shirts.

I like a bit of white near my face, so my solution has been a high neck white tank. As you say, it's really hard to get the t-shirt in the right place and as you wear it, it moves around because you are pulling on the sleeves (short or not). This must be a common problem because I found high neck tanks everywhere - Lands End, Target, Gap, Old Navy, etc.

A dark sweater with light jeans sounds great, I never thought of that! Less somber.

Robin,I do somethimes but not sometimes but not routinely. Granted I think a shirttail hem sticking out below a sweater has more leeway to my eye, but still I find I’ll have issues with his ggd shirt fabric behaves and the lengths of shirt & sweater, which may have been paired up for other attributes.

Good experiments. I do both the tee peeking out and the collar shirt thing (I let the tails hang out too - do you do that?) and quite like both looks. I do find it hard to get the neckline just right for layering with a tee. Hemline is easier.

kkards, those are tweaks I like to do also. Less fussy. If I get dressed and decide bottom- hem or sleeve-peeking is not right that day, I can just adjust without changing clothes.

I’ve also tried the white tee popping out at the neck…and not had a lot of luck with it,,,the tee needs to have a higher neck then I really like, the sweater much have the perfect neck line,,,,it’s just IMO to hard to get everything to align. But i am seeing more of a lighter layer showing below the hem of the sweater, and I am interested in experimenting with that. And I’ll wear a cardigan like a sweater with the top buttons undone to that my tee shows. And I’ll continue to fold up my the arms on my sweaters to so layers that way.

Star, what’s funny is that I also like kkards’ cuffs peeking out and I do that too! Not white necessarily. But the white tee shirt collar did nothing for me. I considered doing a BLACK tee. But overall figured it would always be too much trouble to get the right neckline sliver.

This all sounds like valuable info you ironed out. Dark wash denim is my favourite. I don't like pairing it with brights. I do love it with dark charcoal and burgundy. Your berry and light blue/light gray combo sounds fab. I admired the white peeking out on KKARDS thread. If I went to an event and two others were wearing something I would be glad l didn't. Pointy collars peeking are also interesting when sharp. So well done. If you can post pics will be helpful.

Always good to experiment! I think I would have to snap photos of new combos that work to help me remember; otherwise I would probably go back to ones that didn’t.

I have been trying to do more SYC/outfit creation to hone in on what is working, what things were mistakes, what to Keep/Toss/Hold.

I’ve been seeing the slice-of-white-T-with-pullover look for awhile. Under my sweaters I usually wear underlayers like tanks, camis, underlayer tees with scoop necks to not show, Heattech. I had a small gathering to attend later that day so was playing with WTW. Well, So I got out my white summer T’s ( white not best face color,? but useful in summer, often with LS shirt or linen jacket).
Well, I tried them all with the most likely sweaters & buttoned cardi for the look. and could not get the necklines to work at all. Instead I wore buttoned taupe cardi over sleeveless blue collared shirt and was quite happy with it.
Upon arrival at the hostess’ home, both she AND the other guest were wearing, yep, slice of white T collar.

A day later I tried the thing of wearing T’s backwards. Not gonna do the fashion tape thing. Nothing worked due to cuts, necklines, fullness of T. And then even when I lined things up for a moment, I realized, this is not even what I want to look like. Maybe even the opposite. I then was getting ready to go another place & I layered buttoned cardi over again, a black sleeveless silk collared blouse with small, sharp point collar, which I’ve worn with pullovers before. Really liked that look for me. Experiment over, no harm done.

I also have 2 short-ish sweaters from last year from Anthro-one gray and one a berry color , thinking I would use both as they represent a good neutral and good medium- rich color. But I was tending to avoid the berry with my dark pants & dark skirts, even one that had a bit of berry in a print. I was feeling bad about having bought 2.
Then I just happened to be watching a fashion video clip in which the stylist was also trying a brighter color top with her dark jeans , not liking it, so switch to lightest jeans and voilà, looked much better.
I own exactly 1 pair of wideleg jeans , from ON in a light blue wash ( not the lightest washed- out, but definitely light blue) , because for some reason that color fit better than the darker washes I would usually buy- no idea why. And they’re thick denim & so not really for summer here. So berry + light blue + my Brooks sneakers in a gray- white with blue and berry accent marks and voilà, fresh- looking winter outfit I had not before considered. And of course it translates to other combos- wearing burgundy or charcoal winter tops. This is not a new idea of course, that brights + black or navy can look either kinda dated, or at least just … dark.
