My tip: when you get your haircut, pay scrupulous attention to how the stylist blow dries your hair, and ask tons of questions. Ask them to explain step-by-step what they are doing while they are doing it, and why. Even ask midway if you can try it yourself while they watch and critique.

I've done this every time I go to the hairdresser for the last 3 years now (and three different stylists), ever since going shorter with my haircut. Each time I go, I learn something new, and get better and better at doing my own styling. I do think it's a skill. It's not easy. But it can be learned. My ultimate goal is to be able to style it every day and look like I just stepped out of the salon. I am not there yet, but soooo much closer than I was.... I really had no idea what I was doing for... ever.

My other tip: if you haven't bought a new hairbrush in a long while, check the condition of your brush. I was having Bad Hair Day (BHD) after BHD, and then I realized my brush had seen better days - it had gotten awfully ratty, actually! Beyond the state where soaking and cleaning it out fixes it - pushed in, broken, and missing bristles. EEK. So I recently bought a new brush and wow, it makes a huge difference!!! (But maybe that is obvious to everyone but me, hee hee).

Currently I'm using a whipped wax. The fact that it's whipped makes it less sticky and heavy than a regular wax. I start with just a small amount and gradually use more and more. Along with that I use a volumizing spray at the roots.

This is pretty much how I want my hair to look, but I am having a difficult time getting it to behave that way, and I have neither the time nor the money (nor the hair texture) to use all of their recommended products. I think the idea of twisting hair into sections is a good one, though I imagine it might take longer to dry.

http://www.bumbleandbumble.com....._ID=CAT259

I think for anyone with fine hair, you might have to pick and choose what products you use. Even volumizing products will make my hair fall flat if there is too much. After years of experimentation, the only constant in my styling routine is to never use more than 2 products. It doesn't matter what they are. I have never had success using three or more at a time. By the end of the day, my hair looks like a limp greaseball--not a pretty picture.

Here is the styling cream that I use:
http://www.kerastase-usa.com/_.....rmique.htm?
From what I understand, you just want something that will straighten and protect from the heat.
I think it's interesting to mix the products. I do that when I leave my hair curly. I mix a gel with a curl cream, and it works great!

I've also used this styling cream with success - just use a tiny amount as directed:
http://sephora.com/browse/prod.....inate=true

No AJ they didn't define styling cream and that was my question too. What is it?
I found it interesting that they say to mix styling cream with extra hold gel to give your hair texture while stopping it from falling flat. That is a problem for me, the products cause my hair to go flat. Pomade is a big culprit. I guess I must put too much on and use to close to the roots.
I googled short hair styles and among the styles was this article which didn't give any other clues to brands or anything.
Taylor, I'm so happy we have you as a hair consultant here!!!!
Kristen thanks for sharing the name of the Pureology spray gel.

I was using a great product from Pantene called a mousse/wax for my styling cream, but my hairdresser just convinced me to try a spray gel from Pureology that I love. Since I just got my hair cut pretty short, this is very useful!

I love the idea of twisting sections. I never do that myself, I just tousle dry under the hairdryer until I can start to style with the brush. I'll give it a try, thanks!

Thanks, San. I am not very good at styling my hair and always wish I knew how to use products and knew some techniques. I'll try this out -- although I am sure that it takes practice.

One question: did they define styling cream? I'm not sure if this is mousse or something else. I have a styling gel and pomade (although I wasn't using the pomade correctly).

Step 5...my favorite. Makes the entire style come alive!! Adds texture too. I like how they add.. to warm it in your hands. This is a must..I always tell my clients this too.

I think this info will help alot of people...and many will be happy you shared this.

InstructionsDifficulty: Moderately Easy
Things You’ll Need:
Blowdryer
Hair brush
Styling cream
Extra-hold gel
Pomade
Step1Put a pea size amount of styling cream into your palm together with a dime size amount of extra-hold gel. Mix the two together. This mixture will give your hair texture while stopping it from falling flat.
Step2Massage the mixture into your hair from root to tip. Set your blowdryer to a medium setting. Twist hair into one inch sections. Focus the airflow of the blowdryer to the root of the hair. This will establish volume and prevent hair from going wild.
Step3Continue until all roots are completely dry. Use a hair brush to style the sections of twisted hair around your face. A ceramic brush will work best. Wooden and plastic brushes do not hold heat as long as ceramic brushes.
Step4Use the brush to help. Continue drying the rest of the hair, all the way to the ends.
Step5Place a dime sized amount of pomade into your palm. Rub your hands together to warm up the pomade. Using your fingers, pinch the pomade onto the ends of the small sections of hair. This will not only define layers, but also give hold to whatever style you choose.

I SAW THIS WHILE GOOGLING SHORT HAIR STYLES AND THOUGHT IT WAS A GOOD DESCRIPTION.
