I tried that Dulci style last year -- they are beautiful and come in great colors and prints -- but I unfortunately have the same narrow heel problem as Suz and they would not stay on my foot.

@Banoffi - they're very comfortable for my feet (which are wide.) - I can walk all day in them (which is very rare for me.) Beware, though, they show a fair amount of toe cleavage, so if you have narrow feet, they may slip off.

Those are cute shoes. Are they comfortable?

I need to start carrying in shoes to work as well, as all I wear during the Midwest winter months are boots, boots and boots and it gets old.

Can't think of any such changes I've made myself, though I bet there are some. I enjoyed reading your bag journey, and it's inspiring to hear you found shoes that are working so well for you. Those low-heeled pumps are just beautiful. So classy, refined, and yet fun and cheerful.

@Suz - isn't that funny? I often have the same experience. I always chastise myself when this happens - I feel like I should know my style and lifestyle better, to know that this particular item would work for me, and then have a better idea of what would for me in the future as a result - but somehow it keeps happening. I guess it's good that I'm gravitating to the right things...

Those are so pretty! They make me wish I could wear pumps!

(I rarely ever find a pair that will stay on my narrow heel, alas...)

Back to your question -- I have definitely made changes that I did not expect. Quite often my workhorses surprise me. They're items I buy on a whim and then love.

@Ginger - I didn't realize that Cole Hann made a similar style! I adore my Cole Haans for their style and comfort - I might have to give this version a spin!

Ooh, those are so cute! And the style is very similar to the Cole Haan Julianas that I intend to start collecting. They're the "just right" ones for me.

It's really so much about lifestyle: not just climate but whether you work outside the home, drive or take transit to work, walk a dog regularly, hang out on soccer fields come rain or shine, etc. Also there's some cause and effect. When I was young and free and out on the town a lot, walking just about everywhere, I needed comfortable shoes. Now that I have a more rigid schedule, heading straight home after work to get my kids, etc, I often have somewhat less comfortable shoes, which then discourage me from walking much.

Nice pumps, and swapping out shoes for the weather is the way to do it.

@smittie and @ginger - added! would love to hear what you think.

@echo - isn't it funny how a change like that can drastically alter one's style and lifestyle? I always go through a period of denial, trying to make my existing style work, and then realize that I just need to change and suddenly it all becomes so much easier. It takes a while to get to that realization though...

In the past, my shoes, outerwear and bags were all chosen for form over function. I rarely walked anywhere in the winter, so I really didn't need functional boots or coats.

This year is the first time I have been employed full-time for about 15 years, and my tune on all three changed fairly quickly. I need shoes I can wear and walk for 7+ hours in, and I need coats that are functional enough to keep the wind out when I have outside recess duty (teaching). Bags are more flexible, although I hesitate to wear easily identifiable brands to work. It has been a huge challenge finding shoes that are actually comfortable!

Wow, that's a great idea to bring your shoes to work in a bag. I'll have to try this sometime.
Right now, through the snowy winter, I leave a single pair of shoes at work and wear them every single day. It gets boring :)
I would love to wear some more cute shoes at work, and then switch them out for the child pickup after work.
Thanks for sharing your revelation!

Pull on pants. I wore them in the 90's and vowed never again because they adjust to weight gain too easily. Now I need easy access for insulin shots so not having to deal with a belt and waist button is a plus.
About bags. I had been loving a clutch, but now a need a tote or at least a large satchel to carry all the stuff I need. I'm not happy about having to make these changes but that's life.

For my whole teenage and adult life, I've been a handbag girl. Having a strong practicality streak, having an array of handbags just seemed more functional to me - I had a hard time finding shoes for my wide feet that fit and were comfortable to walk in all day, and when I did, I was loathe to expose them to Canadian weather as they were destroyed so easily. At the same time, I loved the idea of having a stylish receptacle for all that I lugged around all day.

In the last year or so, this has completely changed for me. I realized that with the amount of work I bring home every day and my limited nights out as a mom of two, I really only need totes in my handbag wardrobe. And even those totes get carried from the car to work and then stuffed in a cabinet in my office. My handbag requirements have become much more stringent: must be capacious, easy to carry (cross-body or knapsack), beautiful, and functional. A tall order.

Shoes, on the other hand, are worn all day and with my recent wardrobe minimalism, they are the perfect way to cap off an outfit with a little flair. But as a working mother, I had no time to go to the mall to try on hundreds of pairs of shoes to find ones that fit every time I needed a new pair.

Enter the J Crew Dulci Kitten heel. These pumps are the perfect height for me, the perfect style (I love refined shoes), and come in a wide array of colours and patterns that were never available to me as a lover of low-heeled shoes. How did I deal with the weather problem? I throw them in my huge tote, and only wear them indoors at work!

I have only recently started to plan my wardrobe around my lifestyle (duh) and this was a huge realization for me. I just bought my 6th pair for spring (see in my Finds below.)

What about you? Have you made any style changes you never thought you'd make?
