Rachylou,
I actually don't launder my own stuff too often, maybe every other week (though with two small messy boys the machines are in use!). I have a good supply of underwear, socks and Tshirts, and everything else I wear several times before washing.
Since I've been tracking this year I can answer your question about replacing:
35% of my jeans/pants: the ones I let go of were either really worn out, or turned into shorts and put in the gardening drawer, or a few were feeling too tight.

12% of shirts/blouses/Tshirts: these were either worn out (Tshirts relegated to sleepwear) or I just didn't like them anymore (a couple of blouses)

35% of knit pullovers and cardigans: Apparently I like buying sweaters and sometimes change my mind about them. I think I'll keep my current selection longer and not replace as much!

So yeah, I'm usually ready to let go, and I don't think I've regretted getting rid of anything. This 100-item goal was a result of some culling and I'm now at peace with letting stuff go, especially since I can sell or donate to places that will use them. For me, I feel overwhelmed when the closet is full of stuff I'm not wearing very much. (I avert my eyes from the series of hangers of nice shirts on my husband's side of the closet. He wears Tshirts every day!)

You have a tight wardrobe! I love seeing the numbers... tells me how overloaded *I* am, lol. Do you do laundry often? How much do you replace every year? I mean, what proportion of the total? Are you ready for items to go then?

I really hang on to my clothes for years. I miss them if they go 'too early.'

Thanks for your input, everyone. I am re-motivated to do the exercises every day and am happy to hear of so many of you overcoming your PF. I sort of think mine is getting better, though some mornings are still very painful!

Funny that Angie posted about this sort of thing today! I admired her post of beautiful colorful booties yesterday but just cringed at the thought of wearing them.

Julie, your dedication to tracking wardrobe is impressive. I learn much from forum members who do this! Thanks for sharing your effort with us.

I also have had my run in with PF. Runcarla nailed it as to one of the common causes. Tight calves, and inflexible ankles and feet. I also did a lot of exercises along the line that she mentions to help my PF, plus have custom orthotics for my running shoes. I don't bother for my other shoes. There's much more stress and intensity placed on my body when I run than any other time. I use a foam roller and also use either Mini's or Melt Method balls daily. I've had improved foot strength, balance, and no more PF. I also had pain from what everyone thought might be Mortons Neuroma. Probably not. It was more likely just tendinitis in the same location. I also agree that wearing a heel can be more comfortable than a flat, but my theory is that it is best to vary the shoe to allow your foot a change every day in the way it moves. I think this goes a long way to prevent the problem and also heal the problem over time.

I should add that just short of a year ago I had a Lisfranc injury of my left foot/ankle and the orthopedic surgeon told me that most people never fully recover and always have pain. My injured foot is definitely misshapen, and perhaps there is a small amount of residual swelling, but I am pain free now, and back to running. I attribute my recovery to the exercises.

I am sorry that you suffer from PF. I had a bout of it a couple of summers ago. I also have other foot issues. I went to see a podiatrist when I could not walk on my foot. I found taping my foot and exercises helped. Fitflops helped too.
I only wear certain brands of footwear now because my feet are so fussy. Fortunately the PF has gone.

I had PF in my early 40's and it resolved after I started using Superfeet inserts in my running shoes (as recommended by a Running Room employee). My second bout of PF started last fall (15 years later). Just the left foot was affected, but I could hardly walk. A chiro sorted me this spring with 4 treatments and some exercises (that I still do). (He is the chiro for the Canadian National sprint team!). Tight calf muscles and low ankle mobility contributed to my 'classic' PF (as he called it.) This is what I do:

-myofascial release with foam roller (calves, especially the outside) 2 -3 X per week
- heel raises (rising up to tip toes, then down) - 20 before bed
-myofascial release with a golf ball (entire bottom of foot, including heel) 5 minutes before bed.

I hope you find a solution to your PF and it resolves.

When I had PF a few years ago I bought the Vionic Tide II sandals. They have a super high arch and contoured footbed and were recommended to me specifically for PF.

http://www.zappos.com/p/vionic.....38/color/9

I feel that the Vionics probably helped my feet. But I think what helped the most was aggressively and consistently stretching my calves by hanging down from the edge of a short step. I also massaged a frozen water bottle under my feet every time I was at rest. PF is a bear! I hope you can overcome it quickly!

Suz, My gait is similar to yours I think, and I agree about ultra-flat shoes not working. I also completely sympathize with the urge to walk, but I'm trying to avoid it. A bit half-heartedly, as I've gained a little weight to add insult to injury! Like I said, I'm grouchy about the whole situation.

I had PF once before, maybe 20 years ago, when i was in my 20s, on my feet a lot in the lab, exercising a fair bit, and wearing cheap shoes. I seemed cured after a few months. This time, I blame going barefoot too much at home.

I always wear comfortable shoes, but lately only extreme cushioning is keeping me from intense heel pain (at least only one foot). I wear my sneakers with extra cushioned inserts day and night. Maybe I should try the switching approach. I have lots of different inserts lying around! I also tried ordering shoes from Kuru, which specializes in PF friendly shoes- they almost worked, and maybe i will try another style. Not too fashionable though.

I just did a huge search again on plantar fasciitis and footwear. Unlike JAileen, I have to admit mine is kind of chronic. It is nowhere near as bad as it was when I first got it two years ago. But it comes and goes, even after a year of physio, shock wave therapy, exercise, night splints, and (admittedly spotty) attempts at rest. The thing is, I can't bear to be off my feet! I walk at least 70,000 steps most weeks and also exercise in other ways, and even run a few times a week in spring/ summer/ fall. So...I'm not the poster child for rest, which is probably what really cures a person. In other words, to some extent, it serves me right.

Anyway. What I have found is that a bit of a heel actually helps! Especially a block heel so weight is well distributed -- but a narrow heel that is perfectly placed can be surprisingly okay assuming you are not planning to walk a marathon. And/or a really really good cushioning flatform (like the Fitflops, which also rock a little). It does depend on why you have PF. Many people who get it have flat feet and are pronators. I'm not -- I have a higher arch and am a supinator (if anything) -- my shoes show wear on outside of heel, always, but my physio actually thought my gait looked good when he watched me walk, so who knows.

Besides the Fitflops and sneakers with insert (they are far too flat for me without an insert!!!), here are a few examples of footwear that has worked for me. I do alternate a lot -- often changing shoes a couple of times a day. The variety seems to relieve the stress, so consider that for yourself, too.

What does not work is a shoe that is too flat and/or has no cushioning or one with an arch in the wrong place (or not high enough -- my usual problem.) . Ultimately it comes down to the fit of the overall last -- is it giving you enough support where you need it, does it keep that heel stable or cushioned enough?

Eighteen years ago I had plantar fasciitis. It was diagnosed right before we went to England. I got shots (steroids?) in my feet, and plastic shoe inserts, and I haven't had any problems since. Of course, I threw away the Teva sandals that caused it. I still use the inserts whenever possible. I really love them.

In late June I broke my pinky toe. This upset my plans. I had bought a few pairs of new sandals and couldn't wear any of them. I was really mad at myself! I'm wearing them now, but summer is almost over.

Fellow plantar fasciitis sufferer here. Waving in sympathy! I hear you on the ultra-casual dressing because of that.

I did find that Fitflops were a godsend both this year and last. I walk an enormous amount and not even PF can stop me. These babies made it possible, and although they are very casual, they still look okay with a dress or skirt. I also wore fashion sneakers with Superfeet insoles and could manage those as well.

I actually find summer a bit easier to manage than winter, for the PF, now that I have those Fitflops. But I agree with you that ankle boots are a great way to go. They give nice support and "containment" and should help your situation quite a bit. I have a bunch of insoles/ inserts and I also try to vary my footwear constantly. No one shoe/ boot is perfect, but the variation seems to give me what I need to prevent flare-ups.

Hello! I've been tracking my purchases this year, and tracking wears for about 6 months and I thought I would share with you all. It's been fun. I like a good spreadsheet. This post is long, just for those of you who enjoy this sort of #s thing.

I have an ultra casual work wardrobe and live in a 4 season climate (well, really 2 seasons, hot and cold. It's still in the 90s every day now, but I expect snow in October!).

I have 93 items, not including things that are too worn or too gear-y to wear to work. (So counting a few sweatshirts, but not counting things I wear to garden/make art projects with the kids/exercise/sleep. These "play clothes" I keep separately in a big drawer and wear until they fall apart).
This also does not include accessories, outerwear (I have 15 coats/jackets/vests), or shoes (I have 20 including everything from snow boots to flip flops.)

Here's the rundown:
14 pants, mostly jeans (3 cropped, 3 colored, variety of blue jeans, a few non-jeans)
8 dresses
2 skirts (I only wear one, the other is dressy and I can't figure it out but it's so pretty!)
19 short sleeve Tshirts (OK this is a lot)
11 long-sleeve Tshirts and tunics
10 Blouses and shirts
14 pullover sweaters
12 cardigans
3 sweatshirts

About half of these are for winter, half for summer. I'm pretty happy overall with these #, except that I will need to add to the pants for next summer.

Tracking what I wore:
Over the spring and summer, there were 7 bottoms that I wore 10+ times each. This seemed about right.
I became constrained by footwear partway through the summer and had to stick to truly athletic sneakers due to plantar fasciitis. This was depressing and had me dressing even more casually than normal and not wearing my summer dresses as much.
Tracking was useful in identifying what I really need/wear, and estimating how much I will need to replace. For example, given my current # and wear rate of all cardigans, if they last 4-5 years then I will wear each one 30-40 times and should replace 2-3 each year.

Purchases:
60% of the items I bought this year were used/thrifted. My biggest wins were neutral toppers (new winter trenchcoat, some great thrifted sweaters) and workhorse summer pants (linen joggers, cropped jeans). My biggest fails were items that I bought (mostly used) before I needed them, and then realized they didn't work. Maybe buying more for the current season is the way to go, so I'm more in tune with what I want and need- unless purchasing from a store with a generous return policy like Nordstroms. Other fails were when I tried outside my normal cool-color zone. Some red and white items are going away.

What I want to work on:
Footwear, big time. I'm happy that I might be able to start wearing ankle boots with inserts. I tried buying new shoes this year but nothing really worked out well and I returned several pair. It's good to have something to focus on though.
