It is so hard to tell with sweaters. I have one from KMart that has held up beautifully, yet I have had two from Bloomingdales' that have not.

Though I agree with the others on J Crew and Banana Republic. I have generally done well with their merino wool sweaters from both. Cotton sweaters, I like Lands' End. I have also done well with cashmere from Bloomies. This is about the time of year that Bloomies has their big sweater sale. The one sweater I have from Boden in Merion wool, I love. It is very textured, almost like a boucle, that shows no wear and tear.

In any case, do get yourself a good sweater stone or defuzzer. It will help to keep them looking good for some time to come.

Thanks ladies, you've given me some options to mull over. I work in a university library, where the dress varies by department. Where I am now is casual (not smart casual, but casual casual), how I dress now is somewhere between casual and smart casual. For my new position, I need to step it up to at least smart casual with some business casual thrown in.

TA -- Can you give us a sense of what kind of work environment you'll be in? And what's your usual style? Are you looking for a more dressed-up, polished cardigan, or something more casual?

Most of my cardigans are J Crew and Banana Republic and I've been happy with how they've held up. I do have a silk/cotton blend from BR that has pilled but once I doctor it up, it looks fine. I haven't found any cashmere cardigans that hold up well. I'm planning to try a few Boden cardigans soon too. Just my 2 cents.

If you can do crewnecks and like patterns, Garnet Hill has some gorgeous colors right now. They are merino and a little pricey but they do last (I have thrifted them in great shape).

I have been considering updating my cardigan collection to go with a new job upgrade (!) Please help me with some suggestions of durable cardigans that won't look bad after a few wears/washes. I am open to ideas of various styles and colors, as long as the quality is good. Price is an issue too, but I am willing to buy only one or two for now if I can be sure they will last a while. Thanks!
