Echo your daughter looks lovely and I really love how cute she normally looks. It is amazing how grown up some of those young girls look, much older than 14, I am glad that your daughter wanted to look young and fresh rather than try to look 18. Congratulations to her on her moving speech.

Well she looks lovely in her dress and older than 14. I didn't let my girls spend much on dresses and makeup/hair until 16. The younger daughter did go to a church dance at 14 and we thrifted a $25 dress. I did note to a friend that it was "a bit Pride and Prejudice" as slightly too small for her developing bust at the time. But oh well she was very innocent.
I like your daughter's dress better than some of the other girls who do look too sophisticated at that age to my eye?
Glad that she is doing so well at school!

Jenni, you are right that 8th graders are typically 14, as is my DD. In the past, they could have been 13, but that is rare now, given that most schools have a policy of no child under 5 in Kindergarten - no exceptions. So my DD is 14. She would be flattered that you think she is 17, but realistically, she looked very young for her class. The other girls are mostly slimmer, wear lots of makeup and wear much more revealing dresses (my DD refuses to wear so much as lip gloss!), so you might be shocked at the other 14 year olds!

This is how she typically looks...

And this is a picture (cutting out as many faces as possible, given that I don't have permission to post the other girls online) of some of the other girls.

Kudos to your daughter for her achievements and the gift of her words, which touched so many. 8th grade promotion is very similar here, as most girls wear full-length dresses and often have hair and makeup professionally done. It's a nice way to mark a milestone.

Your daughter looks lovely. I “graduated” from 8th grade many years ago. My dress was very similar, except it was a mini skirt!

Good for her planning to get college credits in high school. I know a young man graduating this month from college who had a year’s worth of credits earned in high school, and will have graduated from college in three years. It is a tremendous savings.

What level is 8th grade- how old are most of them? She looks about 17 but I previously thought 8th-graders were more like 13 ( equivalent to "Year 9" in my and other countries like Australia and UK) ?

This is actually a WMDW (what my daughter wore). She just had her 8th grade promotion, and she was honoured (because of her GPA) by being allowed to give the closing speech. She also received the Presidential Art Award for excellence.

Her speech was very personal, and spoke to the issue of not being happy with how she looked in 7th grade and overcoming that. I must have had a dozen moms come to be after the ceremony to tell me how powerful her speech was and how she gave voice to what every woman feels at some point. I was so proud of her!

I am also proud of her because she took Algebra in 8th grade and is taking both Geometry and Algebra II as a freshman. She is very math oriented, and wants to pursue getting college credits in math by the time she is a senior. She wants to become an actuarial scientist after college.

Anyway, DH thought we were overdoing it with a full-length dress, but girls go ALL OUT for this event. There were so many amazing up-dos and a lot of full-length dresses. We bought her a full-length dress of her choice and took her to have her hair professionally done. Although I didn't quite feel we got what we paid for with the hair (up-dos are expensive!), it was exactly what she wanted, and she loved it (which is all that really matters, I guess). And to top off a fabulous evening, her very best friend - who moved away this year - came to the ceremony! I asked her mum if she was going to stay for the dance, and her mum said she wasn't allowed because she wasn't a student at the school any longer. Because I teach, I told her to "give me a minute." I went and talked with the Super, and he gave his permission and signed her permission slip, so my DD got to spend the evening with her best friend!
