Interesting article. But I think the biggest take away for me, was the one that went unsaid but hinted at a lot, stylish people feel secure in their look. To oneself the outfit says "me" regardless of the current trends.

Thanks for the link. I think the part about not being overly trendy (#6 ?) is especially true. The people I know who seem very stylish have hones a certain "look" that suits them and while they update they do not jump on to every trend.
I might have missed it, but I didn't remember seeing anything about fit. IMHO, fit is so important. It's one of the things that can so make or break the look.

I have to go with Parsley. I understand the author was trying to make the point that a person can shop anywhere and that style is not dependent on the amount one spends, but enough already. She doesn't have to keep repeating and putting down those who choose some designer pieces as not having a clue. Thrift is not superior to designer (nor is one exclusive of the other), nor vice versa.

Ultimately, no matter how often people repeat that you need to have your own style, etc. even a lot of people with almost unlimited funds who are photographed regularly don't. A LOT of people need help, and honestly, a blog/forum like this that meets people where they are instead of making a list of style dictates does far more to help. Even Anna dello Russo admits that she usually buys and wears piece for piece from the runway. She rarely wears anything other than exactly what was shown, and she really doesn't have a style of her own. Now, there's nothing wrong with that; it's what works for her. But for someone to develop their own style, a list of rules just isn't going to do it.

A nice reminder there's a difference between fashionable and stylish. I'm not sure the list is quite right - I'm pretty sure that stylish people dress to be stylish, for instance. I don't think they're less done either - not always. I'd say maybe that fashion is the clothes, style is you.

I do agree - and somewhat mourn - that clothes used to be a bit more a practical matter and a little less entertainment. Although I'm guilty as charged...

That is how I took it too, kkards. Don't be discouraged from trying a look just because you can't afford the labels. In other words, simply paying more isn't the measure of style. Sort of like that "the Look for Less" feature in InStyle.

very interesting list.

lyn*--i took #4 to mean that truely stylish people are comfortable in their style, and wear what is approprate for them, even if it runs counter to the crowd.
parsley--at 1st read, i was with you, i thought that the author was kind of condescending toward people who wear designer labels, but then i read it again, thinking about a young cousin who was lamenting what a blogger wear, and how much the outfit cost. i think she was just trying to make a point that its not who you wear, but what you wear and how you wear it.

I was irked by what I saw as the reverse snobbery of the article. I disliked the implication that if you wear designer items you are being superficial and label-conscious. I certainly think that it's possible to be stylish and wear designer clothing! Of course it is possible to be stylish and wear nothing but thrift shop finds, too.

Basically, "To thine own self be true." But question, can someone be stylish without edge by that definition? They imply that it's the element of the unexpected and the unexpected juxtaposition that makes one stylish. So that begs the question, if you like a prevailing style and are mainstream, can you still be considered stylish by their interpretation? Thoughts?

However, if you are not born with the style gene (I wasn't!), all of this is far more difficult! I have never been drawn to trendy labels and still not into Pininterest. Yet, I still lack that fashion cool. I am trying to learn it, but it sure doesn't come naturally.
