My first thought--no maxi but I just can't take them on myself so thought I would give it a chance.....then, when I saw the potential shortened version. LOVE that. I think that would be a great dress. Let us see it when you've finished the hack....

Number three is the one. I love Rene Russo's wardrobe in The Thomas Crown Affair too. Perfection. That was Michael Kors when he designed for Celine. It's one of my style icons in my profile!

First of all, congratulations on losing some weight. Second, I say this looks very nice hacked and I think it has great potential. I like it, and think you are heading in the right direction. The long, maxi version is overwhelming and not at all in keeping with your wonderful fantasy. Infinity pools and Pierce B.! A great way to start my day! Thanks!

Definitely shorten it. I LOVE the dress. This is my favourite style & combination in stripes

And may I comment on what a beautiful setting you've presented! I am crazy about infinity pools...and Bordeaux.... and Pierce Brosnan....well, and STRIPES.

Thoroughly enjoyed this post! Thanks Chris

I can see that dress but confess I am kind of lost in the scenery you presented. Lounging by the pool(SIGHT)

I think that the dress will work shorter and I like Angie's suggestion of cutting the sleeves also. Still very Martinique poolside appropriate.

I loved Rene Russo's wardrobe in the Thomas Crown Affair. She looked amazing.

oh yeah, and meant to say Muffin, I also adored Rene Russo's wardrobe in that movie. Right up there with Devil Wears Prada for me in terms of memorable wardrobes in a movie about modern times. It was all very modern, classy stuff of the day. Matching coat/dress ensembles, colors perfect for her red hair...yum!

Muffin, I DO sew so I'm going to think seriously about altering this dress. I have worked with knits a bit (ballpoint needle etc) so I could do it ok.

Thanks so much ladies, I'm going to get out my pincushion and start playing with options and take some pics and decide where to go with this.

Definitely looks like it swamps you at full length. Totally see what Angie does: Shorten to on or just below the knee and take the sleeves up to the elbow. Would then be a great easy dress option! Could be worn on its own or with a light topper.

I love stripes so I will always try to make them work but I agree with the others that this dress as is just overwhelmes you. Do you sew? I don't, and when I have taken knits to be hemmed it has been much more expensive than I anticipated due to getting the fabric to hang just right. you don't sound completely sold on this dress, maybe return and keep searching. Or at the very least watch The Thomas Crown Affair again (I loved Renee's wardrobe in that movie)!

Joy, high low or diagonal is a great idea. I'll look around pinterest for some ideas.

Marianna yes good point about covering up too much. I've come to that conclusion before but couldn't put my finger on it this time so thanks!

El Cee good idea I'll try midi length too.

Suz...LOL...not sure what the floral scents are I am a bit too busy gazing at my companion in the linen shirt..(can you tell I have a thing for that actor)...actually what I remember from my real trip was huge gorgeous hibiscus plants everywhere which don't have much scent.

Where I live we only have really hot humid weather for a few weeks total, and my threshold for what's uncomfortable is a few degrees higher than most people, so I think the sleeves would be ok.

Great tip on archives, I'll do some searching.

Also I "collected" that JCrew sweater you posted recently in your "canvas bag" forum topic.....showing it here again...liking the darker background again...

Ah...thank you for pouring that Bordeaux, and I must say, the breeze is beautiful...is that jasmine I smell?

Wait. What? You want me to evaluate stripe placement? If I drink much more of this wine I will be seeing in triplicate...

In all seriousness, if you don't mind cutting it off (either straight, or diagonally or in a hi-low style as Joy suggests) this could have potential. I would consider whether the sleeves might make it too hot for your needs -- it really depends on climate. The narrow stripe on the dark background is working for you.

This is a great illustration also of how those midi tube skirts work -- and actually, they are more figure flattering to more of us because they narrow at the bottom. Several pretty pears on the forum had them and loved them as well. If you look through the archives for Diana or Sveta and VC tube skirt or tube skirt you might find images.

I very much like your Martinique villa fantasy scenario. I am not loving the dress as a maxi as, to my eye, it needs a little more leg revealing so as not to look like a long striped tube. Have you tried pinning it up just a few inches to midi length (still retaining some of the sexy slit)? Knee length also has potential.

I like the idea but for me it's covering up too much. Want to see some skin. The high-low hem helps tremendously. I might wear a long pendant necklace to break up some of the pattern. If you're willing to do the high-low alteration I think it would be a fun dress!

A long striped dress is a lot of stripes, especially as it has sleeves. I like it best in #3, more knee length or sleeveless. Cut off as a tunic top to wear over white pants sounds good. You could even give it a high-low or diagonal hem.

This is definitely an experiment, one that I'm prepared to "fail" and move on from with no regrets.

I brought home this knit dress from Loft as research into figuring out what configuration of stripes I like, inspired by TexStyle's and LisaP's recent posting. I've lost a little weight lately so was willing to take a shot at a horizontal striped dress with long side slits up to the knee.

First the amusing part...my first thoughts about how to wear this were a little wild.....in my imaginary life I'd wear it on the patio of my Caribbean villa with an infinity pool, while I sipped very cold and dry white Bordeaux and watched the sunset. Think 1999 remake of "Thomas Crown Affair" with Pierce Brosnan and Rene Russo, the scene where they flew to his private villa. That scene was filmed in Martinique. In my fantasy life Thomas Crown aka Pierce B is wearing a white linen shirt with rolled sleeves and sipping on white wine or a martini.

Whew. Deep breath. I did go to Martinique once (more summer camp than villa) and do like white Bordeaux; otherwise I need to get back to reality... .

The horizontal strips are typically not flattering on short, pear shaped bodies like mine, and I can't readily think of anywhere I would wear this. Also need some higher heeled sandals in a light neutral. I do however really like the black background with white stripes, and the shape of the shoulders and sleeves. The knit fabric is really soft and lightweight and surprisingly not clingy at all. In pic #3 I pulled up the front hem to fake a knee length look, which I like a lot better and could imagine wearing. I'm also considering chopping it into a top and saving the bottom half for some later use. I could also return it and chalk it up to research.

I need some serious honesty from you, my YLF friends....:-)
