Getting good summer tops is always a challenge for me too. I am always amazed at how difficult it can be to find those perfect summer tops. The worst part of it, is that I wear them out pretty quickly, so this search seems endless.

So pleased you found some great jeans - now they are really FAB.

Fascinating post. Great reviews. The "cons" were especially important because they are deal breakers in my opinion. I am so glad you did not settle.

Thank you for the reviews. They are very helpful. I have challenges similar to yours. I am glad you were critical of the fits and willing to wait to find the right fits. So happy to hear that you have found a jean style and brand that fits so well! That is often a challenge, too.

Rachy, I'm a little sad too but I'd be sadder if I threw away $170 (on sale!) on something that I knew did not fit.

Style Fan, Suntiger. thanks.

Angie..HAH! this is one reputation I don't mind upholding

Jane, so true! I lucked out finding the first pair of these Levis but the other three were conscious duplicates when I saw how well they fit. They are not the only jeans I own but they seem to be the only ones I'm wearing these days. Soon we'll be into summer when I won't wear them much at all except the white and light wash ones for social events in the evening.

RobinF, nodding along with you!

Great tops, too bad about the fit. I sew too so I totally get trying to make things work but not if they are pricey. I figure if I get it super cheap then if it gets ruined it's not a big deal but if it costs a lot then it needs to fit. Good luck with the search!

taylor, you are so right about jeans fit. I got really lucky to have found these jeans, and then I just HAD to duplicate!

Yes shiny, you get it about armholes. Sometimes on sleeveless top the armhole can be raised by taking in the shoulder seam but not always. Yes the print top has a knit band around the bottom. It's so long it comes down over my thighs. It is too big in the overall width, and the neckline has a band too and is too low for my liking. A complete makeover is what is needed, assuming that would work, and I do all my own alterations so the only tailors I know are ones I've had do the occasional shortening of a coat or jacket sleeve that I don't feel like doing myself. I'd be reluctant to take this sort of job to any of them.

Bonnie, the red top comes to too low a V, and I tried pulling it in to see if I could use a safety pin or similar but it changes the fit in an awkward way where the whole front of the top from armpit to armpit looks too narrow. And the neckline has a sort of collar so not easy to take in the shoulder seams.

karen13 I KNEW you would get this. The fits can be SO close but SO wrong! Suz and ChristeLJ sounds like you ladies get it too.

Good for you to be picky - they are all lovely and it would be tempting to let that overcome the small fit issues.. I share your pain on petite tops! Many of my mistakes have been me trying to convince myself a Misses size was ok, or that I could “fix” it. It rarely is as good as holding out for the right one. The curse of sewing skills!

Shopping online does involve a lot of returns but for those of us who don't live in or near cities it's a way to get more options. The red top really looks good on you. Could it be modified or pinned to make it work?

You picked out some gorgeous tops -- it's a pity none of them fit quite right. The low armhole on regulars drives me nuts. Sure, one can shorten a hem but you can't easily fix an armhole.

The print top looks like it nearly fits? Is it banded? Any chance you could have a tailor just shorten it?

You really struck gold finding the style of denim that works for you. I think finding that is one of the hardest things to nail down, because with denim it’s all about the fit !

I admire your sewing abilities. Mine are basic, but I spent many years self altering (what I could )my clothes to achieve the perfect fit.

As mentioned in this post, I ordered some tops, a bag, and white jeans to add to my “summer social events” capsule. This turned into a tutorial (for me more of a refresher) on why regular sizes so often do not work on petites. Everything but the white jeans are going back. I wrote these reviews to help try to cement these concepts in my brain, and share them here in case they are helpful to others. The hunt continues….

JEANS

I didn’t try the 7 for all mankind jeans because the rise measurement is too long, but the levis were a slam dunk. This is the 4th pair in this style I’ve bought this year, the fit is just right as I’m slowly losing some weight. The need to be shortened exactly the same amount as the other three, which will take me about 20 minutes!

BAG

I have been looking for a black/white bag for quite a while, and thought I might like a bit of metal on it, but there is a lot of metal on this bag and I don’t like it. Back it goes. NEXT.

TOPS: All were good quality with nice fabrics

Photo 1:Yellow Motherchic sleeveless top. Cons: armholes too low and overall too long and wide. It was sold out in petite sizes that would have worked better. Pros: neckline not as tight
as shown which in my view is a plus esp. for summer, and I liked the color and print.

Photo 2: Floreat print top. Cons: armholes too low, hem too long, overall too big. A slightly smaller size (all sold out) might have been better but probably not good enough. Pros: stunning print and fabric. I briefly considered taking it apart and remaking it but it would be quite risky and the top is very pricey. Since I do most of my own alterations, I don’t know a good tailor who I could ask to do a make-over. Not meant to be.

Photo 3: Red crepe wrap top – Cons: neckline too low and would require a cami which would make it pretty hot for summer; also it’s a cool red and I prefer warmer reds. Pros: reasonable hem length, armholes ok, and a nice long wrap sash so very versatile. Comes in a lot of colors

Photo 4: ¾ sleeve Lush blouse –
Cons: neckline just a hair too low although ok if I stand and don’t move. Very wrinkly fabric, would require lots of ironing. Sleeve style too unstructured for my tastes in a fabric this thin. Pros: Fit is ok overall, and is a DELICIOUS cinnamon color that I adore. Must remember to keep looking for this color starting at NAS and later

Conclusions: for woven tops, I need to stick to petite sizes when ordering online, unless I’m ok with returning almost everything. For knits my chances are better because the fits are more flexible. Trying on regular sizes when in stores is fine, I can easily eliminate the ones that don’t fit and not take them home with me. Same rules apply to jackets, and sometimes to dresses and coats.

All this talk about getting the right fit makes me think about making a few things from scratch. I used to make clothes when I was in my 20’s and 30’s but gave it up because it was so time consuming. Hmmm…. compared to how time consuming it is to order/return and/or do alterations, perhaps not so bad !
