I think you look really cute in the dress and not like Judy Jetson, but it seems a bit casual for the occasion. However, it does suggest to me that you look great in dresses so I’m not sure why you’re hating them. But obviously if you hate it don’t wear it!

I agree, if the sipper were buttons that short blue dress was my mandatory high school uniform :). It is is a nice dress for a hot summer day but not so much for a reunion party. Do you have to wear a dress? You look great in a dress but you seem to be struggling with it. What about a chic light weight two piece with pants?

Well the sandals are gorgeous at least. I am 65 now and also short, I find just below my knees in dress length to be the most flattering proportion wise with flat sandals and I am only 5 foot 1, pear/apple shaped. You don’t look at all dumpy, you look very nicely proportioned!
Back to the longer dress but get it hemmed?

I think you’re on the right track with fit and flare and emphasizing your waist. Not sure why you ordered the shorter dress, and I get the dissatisfaction with knees over 60 but I think your knees look fine.

Personally I find dresses trickier than separates for events, so I’d probably default to nice pants and a blouse/topper.

Back to square one! So i ordered the short version of the periwinkle Camuto dress. Unfortunately, in this cotton sheeting fabric - on me, at least - it just looked too uniform-ish. (Think Judy Jetson in her summer job as a waitress. ) And this length is not kind to my 60-something knees. And I just don’t like how I look - which is kind of dumpy, My metallic belt is now too small to wear. Not sure I like the metallic belt with the dress’s utilitarian exposed zipper anyway. I also ordered a cute linen dress from Quince. Hate it on me. Dresses never used to be this much of a struggle! I sure would love to find one though.

For what it’s worth, I had exactly the same idea as Janet. A nice pair of trousers, and if you don’t care to wear white perhaps consider navy, which would work well with a metallic sandal to keep things light and coordinate with any jewelry you may wish to wear. A topper in case of frigid air conditioning is always a good idea.

If you can wear flat sandals I think you are in business, because as you say you can target the material, such as metallic, to read more festive , yet sandals are summer-appropriate. A very flat sandal can still look polished, and also not “ trying too hard” , because is grounded ( haha) and comfortable.

I can relate with a lot of your post — humid mid-Atlantic, similar body shape concerns (I’m a little taller but have also learned that white pants are not my friend).

That dress looks really promising — great proportions and shoulder emphasis. One thing I keep in mind for these kinds of events is the likelihood of being photographed a lot, and how outfits will look in pictures. Anything prone to a lot of creasing, especially in the heat, gives me pause, so I’d check fabrication carefully!

I think if I were going to something like this, I’d go with a simple pair of wide-length, full-length pants and a light, loose top that is breezy but covered. Not too busy of a print. Something that makes me feel great. The trousers make it easy to wear whatever shoes are most comfortable, but a pair of nice flats would work well. But I find separates easier to fit than a dress. YMMV!

Thank you to ALL! GREAT thoughts and suggestions! I was concerned that it might be "too much dress” for me and would make me look dowdy, esp. since I can’t wear heels. Plus its vibe is somewhat dressy. As it turns out, I discovered, at Nordstrom, a short version in the same fabric. I think it’s more versatile for my casual lifestyle, and if it fits (and doesn’t look “weird” with the shoulder pads, per the one review), it might work better for me. I will have to wear metallic flat sandals for comfort.. They are a bit casual, but I have no choice, unfortunately. Laceless sneakers fall off my feet!

I like the dress! I added the FINDS.

uneasyshopper, my suggestion is to order the dress, and remember that small alterations are worth every penny when they create a better fit! If this one does not work, keep trying other fit and flare shirt dresses. Sounds like that's your preference ;)

You'll need a topper for a/c. So think about that too. Shorter jackets look great with this type shirtdress when you want to showcase a defined waist.

Tie a square knot instead of a bow.

Can you wear low volume and low contrast sneakers that are laceless with the dress?

Looks promising!
I don’t know your type of foot issues, but I have major issues which especially make it hard to do dressy looks have like, unless mostly sitting or for just a couple hours. So I do have to work from the feet up, as suggested, and make my compromises in one place or another so that the resulting ensemble is satisfactory—some amalgam of style, comfort ( includes temperature and related adjustments possible as well as foot comfort)!, occasion- appropriate, confidence or “ image” or whatever. It might be that I have several directions I can go in, but also have to factor in time required, such as if I need hemming, or some order& return cycles.

Also, are you traveling, and by what means? Would affect how I view packing a perhaps 100% cotton dress, at least allowing time for touch-up.

I went to a school reunion last year and it was varied in what people wore, some were very casual and others dressy. My biggest recommendation is to wear very comfy shoes as you are likely to be on your feet for most of the night. I would start with the shoes and work upwards from that. I wore a heeled bootie with a dress, but even though I thought my shoes were comfy, after 3 hours standing, I was very happy to go to the restaurant and sit down.

It is always tough to dress for these occasions because so much seems to ride on it, and then add to all that the likelihood of humid weather...

The dress you posted is really pretty and seems as if it could work very well for the occasion, though Donna raises a good point about potential issues with the length. It's definitely worth a try, though -- and maybe it comes in petite? For the bow -- I would just tie it a different way or get a a different belt.

Footwear -- you might try these shoes from Naturalizer. https://www.naturalizer.ca/en/.....-ec0101274.

(that links to the Canadian site but you can go to the US site). They come in widths. Runcarla has a bunion and wears these with comfort. I have a small developing bunion and also very narrow heels (so usually can't do slingbacks) but these shoes are fantastic for me.

I think maybe a good strategy is to start with the shoes.

Also, being able to de-emphasize comfy shoes is one advantage of a maxi dress, which I don’t think anyone is too short to wear aesthetically as long as it’s not dragging on the ground. But it’s all about what makes YOU feel confident and good.

A very pretty dress, and I'm sure there are ways to minimize the bow, or leave the belt off entirely. Maybe a metallic belt instead, and matching flats? I love the cut workm at the bottom, it lightens the whole look.

Cute dress! From your self-description, it looks to be extremely flattering on you. At 51" long, I think it might be maxi length on you; cut-outs make it hard to hem up. You could always replace the belt or not tie it in a bow.

Do you have a cropped topper that would work if there is arctic air as well as footwear?

What to wear to a 50th high school reunion in the midatlantic region in June? I can rule out tiered or flounced or pleated or drop-waist skirts, which make me look dumpy. Same with white pants, a mistake I've made over and over. (Whenever I see photos of me wearing them, I find I look especially bottom-heavy.) I’m 5’4”, a bit of a pear, basically a size six with narrow shoulders. I’m too short to wear anything maxi. Could probably handle midi. Bunions have made shoes a huge challenge, though shoes have been a life-long challenge for me. (Gosh, what a NEGATIVE post! Sorry!) The event will be held at a hotel (with A/C), but this is not a formal event. I don’t think I even need to wear “cocktail attire.” I tend to look best in something waist defining. I’m fussy about fabrics — prefer cotton or linen for summer. I’m not a fan of synthetics…too hot. Thinking about this dress from Dillards because of the color and the cotton fabric —not sure about the enormous bow from the sash though. Would truly appreciate your sage advice! Many TIA!
