I saw the exhibit in Washington DC, on a weekday. DH and I had the gallery almost to ourselves, so I, especially, didn't just view the photos, but studied them for a long time. Still, I hated to leave. One of my top experiences in an art museum (and I'm a frequent museum goer.)

I just read the article and saw the pics the other day. I was very drawn to how in the early pics they are mostly standing separately, but as time goes on they are hugging and embracing each other more. I would also love to see the exhibit.

Yes, I love Susan Minot too! Monkeys is such a great book.

Viva, I thought the second on the left changed the most - her hair and expressions. All look slightly wary though and just a little aloof.

There is one sister in particular -- the one who is always on the far right -- whose face I find so moving. In some of the later pictures she dodges the camera a bit, looking off to the side or down, and it makes me wonder. I can see myself getting very emotional looking at these images in person. It's the passage of time, the sense of a woman's life, the implicit idea of changing relationships ....

I do come from a family of sisters which is maybe why I find myself so drawn to this series, I don't know. (I've read about it before.)

I'm going to try to grab a sister and head to New York in November to see it.

(And Suz, I loved Susan Minot's novel "Monkeys." It was a very powerful read for me just after college.)

I also enjoyed this review of the book that was published after 25 years of the photos - http://www.petertbrown.com/sto.....review.pdf

That is so great ! Thank you. I just love to see series of siblings or families. We have been photographing my children together on their first day of school since 2006. We also photograph them every year by the door where we measure them on every birthday. This was just so incredibly touching .

This is beautiful. Susan Minot (the author) is also a very accomplished novelist, whose subject matter often concerns families over time. I would love to see this in person. I'm sure I'd be one of the weepers.

I think some people just cry when they are moved or touched, not out of sorrow. And there is a message of survival and resilience here, at leas to me. There is such grace, reserve and privacy in their faces... I find them simultaneously universal and yet so quintessentially New England.

Thanks for sharing! Beautiful project. We have similar pictures of my dad and his four brothers through the years, because my Oma used to urge them to pose for a picture on each Christmas holiday dinner.
