This week was extremely stressful what with my husband's medical procedure and overnight stay in the hospital. However, I kept eating healthily. When I asked what to wear to the hospital, several people mentioned taking snacks, too. So I took cut up apple, carrots and celery, and also took nuts. I never resorted to any junk. In fact, a nurse saw me munching on a carrot stick and she said, "Oh, you eat healthy," in almost an accusatory tone.

I cut out yoga and am now doing spinning 3x a week!
The point was to heal a knee injury and I think it might be working.
I think the twisting and contorting in yoga prevented my knee from healing.

The other thing is that the cardio feels more intense AND I can watch cnn and hgtv while doing it, which is so awesome because I don't have cable at home.

Gradfashionista, Whole30 allows fruit in moderation with meals. Just no added sugar.

Shedev, I'm late coming back to this, but I am fine about "no fake foods made with Whole30 ingredients." Way back in the day I did Atkins and got way into things like that and I don't think (for me, at least) it leads anywhere good.

My theory on things like desserts and pancakes is that I'd rather eliminate them for the duration of the Whole30, then afterwards reserve them for special treats and only eat the real thing and only if it's delicious.

I made these mushrooms last night and they were amazing: https://paleoleap.com/roasted-mushrooms-thyme/

I just reactivated my visits to the Pilates studio. It makes me feel better than anything. I went into a downslide (tailspin?) after the elections, but the spring weather is making me feel like reinvigorating myself to deal with all the stress. Eating lots of kale and beets right now, for some reason.

Meredith - there is no shame in occasionally quitting a workout. Something was telling you to stop, so you did. I think if it was a constant thing, then you'd question what the issue was, but listening to that inner voice is ok.

Meredith - this happened to me when I regularly went to the gym hall. Maybe you were already tired for other reasons.

Doing well with biking, swimming, weights. Decided to attempt a run. Bad idea! Cardio for other sports made it easy, but my heel pain flared up. Afterwards. So disappointed! Back to square one there.

For Lent and to get back into regular exercise, I am committed to walking 2 brisk miles a day ( about 30 minutes for me). It is a small start but helps the blood glucose levels. This week has gone well. I would like to lose about 10 pounds but current meds make that extra difficult, so I just hope to stay at my current weight.

Confession. Part of my fitness routine is to work out at Orange Theory twice a week (it's a group workout session with cardio and weights) and I love it. But yesterday I dropped out of the workout 20 minutes early. I have never done that before. There was no thought that went into it. I just decided I was done, stopped the treadmill, used the excuse of needing to finish something by 8:00 am for work (which was true, but I could have easily finished it after the workout), and I left. I've been thinking a lot about why I couldn't physically and mentally commit to finishing and what I might need to add (or remove) from my routine. Humbling.

I walked 20 minutes yesterday. It was really good to get the fresh air. I need to actually schedule it in. I also have been doing PT exercises. I have been doing better with my eating; better portion control. And with the two together I can feel a bit of definition in my waist. Yay!

After a long period of inactivity I finally decided to to get enrolled in a yoga course. I started at the beginning of February and I am dutifully going twice a week. My muscles are starting to feel less stiff and I found out that yoga is not boring at all, as I used to think. That's all what I do for now.

I gave up sugar for Lent. I was told that the first week would be the hardest and that it would be easier after that. After I get my sugar cravings under control, I intend to start monitoring my carb intake. My ultimate goal is to start to transition from lots of bad carbs to more healthy carbs.

I am going to hike the Grand Canyon. I found a great training program to start to prepare me, but work (or sheer laziness) has sidelined me. I keep saying "today." Then I say "tomorrow."

I'm also not following the not weighing rule. I'm planning to follow whole 30 thru lent. I bought a box of sugar free fruit bars that ended up having maltodextrin in the ingredient list so I'm back at day one. The best thing i have made is salmon patties that were just salmon, egg, almond flour, and spices.
Ms. Mary, how do you feel about non whole 30 foods made with whole 30 ingredients, but would not be whole 30? An example would be pancakes. I'm on the fence about this. When I first heard of whole 30, I thought there was no way I could do it, but my body has already forced me off some of the foods, like dairy.

Shedev! Lovely Husband and I started Whole 30 on Feb 27! We've made it a whole week and so far have lived to tell the tale! The biggest change for us is that we are used to having wine every night and cocktails on the weekends! LH was the designated driver on Saturday for the first time in his life! LOL He says "well, at least now we know we're not alcoholics because we're seven days dry!"

The funny thing is we're totally obsessed with food now! We are spending inordinate amounts of time shopping for it, preparing it, talking about it, and even watching greater-than-usual amounts of FoodTV! But it's doing the trick -- he's down 6.5 pounds the first week and I'm down 3 lbs. I would like to lose 10 more and I hope this program will get me halfway there. (Yes, I know you're not supposed to weigh yourself on the plan but that's the one rule we're not following!)

In exercise news, I did three workouts at the gym last week and yesterday we did a fun 17-mile bicycle ride. I hadn't been on my bike since around New Year's so it was good to get back in the saddle.

TL;DR -- best week of the year so far!

At last a turnaround week. Since the beginning of the year I've had a pessimistic outlook, but now I feel much cheerier. By mid-week I started to get control of my eating and snacking, and I spent the few warm days outside working on my garden--pruning and raking up dead stuff. Gardening always cheers me up. I impressed myself with how strong and muscular my arms are. I do have to watch my back though.

Last year I bought several boxes of Good Earth teas, drank a few, but then forgot them. This week I decided that I would have one at my weakest times, 11 am and 3-4 pm. Right now I'm having Tropical Rush. They are naturally sweet and so far work for taking of the hunger edge until lunch and dinner. I also realized that I have to stay away from red meat. This came after episodes of bloating and joint swelling after eating at an expensive steak house, followed up by my favorite lamb chops a few days later. I've also become more sensitive to salt.

Another thing I have started is to take a photo or two of myself every day, not for fashion, but for a record. I tried on all my jackets and most of them, especially the spring ones, fit in the shoulder but they don't hang right because of what we used to call spare tire. I want to be healthy, but I do admit that wanting to look good in my clothes is a strong motivation. Then there is that family beach vacation coming up in a few months. I'm afraid to try on swimsuits right now.

Acorn woodpeckers are back.

I started the whole 30 on March 1. It hasn't been bad so far. In some ways it is not too different than how I was eating before. I can see how it would be much more difficult for people without gluten, lactose, and sugar restrictions.

Travelling is a b*tch for eating properly, isn't it? I loved The Crown and can't wait for another season. I had a decent work-out week: not perfect, but it worked with my schedule and energy level. Eating was good too - I am experimenting with a 16/8 fast and found it ridiculously easy. I always thought I had to eat the minute I got up and would die of hunger if I didn't (lol) but that has not been the case.

This week's workouts have been a been skeletal due to traveling and other obligations. I managed to squeeze in a daily workout squat and bench, and PRed a 212.5lb squat. It seems like I'll have to wait awhile before hitting that again anytime soon, because my CNS is overtaxed at the moment.

Highlight of the week: PR deadlift 300lb. The elusive 300--I feel like throwing a party. With this goal achieved, it's tempting to reintroduce deadlifts regularly into my program.

I finished my cardio show, The Crown, and now need a new series to watch. Suggestions?

Nutritionally, this week was less than stellar. When I'm away from my kitchen, I tend to gain a bit of pudge. I have to remind myself that there isn't a deadline to lose whatever's been gained over this trip, and to ease back into my old routine without excessive restriction.

How was your week?
