Jenni -- thanks for chiming in as a health care professional.

Hah, bridgie, I'm glad it looks like I'm having fun! I am. Clothes are fun. :D

Suz -- One thing I've come to appreciate about a moderate-sized wardrobe is that I never feel any pressure to settle for "meh" things just because I desperately need something to wear, which I did a lot of right before and after DS was born. I'm at a point now where even my warm-weather wardrobe, which is my leanest season, has just enough cushion that I don't feel desperate for any particular item, and don't live in fear that "my one good _____" will bite the dust. I suspect I'll always have a shortlist of items I look forward to upgrading, but that's fine.

Permethrin is often used on humans, I have prescribed it many times for scabies ( tiny microscopic mite that causes really itchy red spots) and needed to use it myself when I must have caught them from a patient! Worked fast luckily as the spots are unbelievably itchy.

This is the Permethrin I use: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001ANQVYU?psc=1

It's an insecticide (a pyrethroid, so in the same category as the pyrethrin Tex inked above, essentially a neurotoxin that destroys insect neurons) designed for use on clothes, tents, etc. I treat my gear -- running shoes, gaiters, and certain socks and pants -- in the spring, and sometimes again in late summer if I remember (the tick season keeps getting longer, ugh). I wouldn't want to use it on my everyday or indoor clothes since it's a pretty potent chemical (and very dangerous for cats, so if you have feline friends be careful about using it and make sure to store it where they can't access it).

I used to be pretty anti bug dope and only used plant based repellants, but the risks of vector borne diseases (Lyme, West Nile, Zika, bubonic plague carried by fleas...) have forced me to re-evaluate my stance. :(

ETA: I think Permethrin is also the compound used in many common head lice treatments? It's considered a fairly low-toxicity (to humans) insecticide.

These are great insights. I think we face some similar dilemmas. We like variety (of silhouette as well as colour) and this means a moderate sized wardrobe (at least in a 4 season climate) vs. a more streamlined one -- which conflicts with our desire to be as minimal as possible.

Meanwhile, we are active people who live in a difficult climate in a place where people are very casual. And we sometimes long to dress in a way that doesn't quite work with our weather or our activities.

Your situation is even tougher than mine because I am urban. (No ticks to contend with unless I go out of town).

Emily K -- I spend an hour or two each day dog-walking, but I revert to gear for that. I'm often on trails, and my road resembles a trail anyway. Plus ticks/Lyme disease have me scared enough to treat all my hiking/running clothes with Permethrin now... I think shoes are the one thing in my wardrobe I have a real "saving for good" problem with. I struggle with the temptation to revert to "beater" shoes for everything except actual events. I may need to do a lot g term CPW challenge for these items, to force myself to wear them

Barbara Diane -- I chose about half a dozen items for this challenge that I haven't been wearing as much as I'd like, and essentially built the rest of my 30 around them, so I think this type of capsule can be used as a "wear the heck out of it!" challenge.

I've been reflecting on your comment about shoes because I find that the choice of shoe sets the tone for the outfit. (And, I remember Suz writing about this factor with regard to her winter boots, which made her outfits more uniformly casual than she would have liked.). For me, I start my day by walking the dog for 2.5 miles and I do not like to break-down good shoes with that kind of mileage. Plus, rain and dirty or flooded sidewalks. It's hard to escape the need to plan around footwear and that's why leather sneakers so often set the tone for me.

I don't think I have any suede at the moment! I'm even more suede-phobic than I am silk-phobic. I included two silk items in my capsule, and have worn one so far. My wet climate is not friendly to suede.

Sterling -- on rainy days I've been defaulting to my merino Allbirds slip-ons. They're very comfortable even when damp. There have also been a couple days when I only went outside in my trail runners, and after I changed out of gear didn't really need shoes again. Btw I love the pink clutch -- I hope it serves you well!

I could not find a link so I took a picture. I am a lousy photographer and did not do justice to the clutch. It is a lovely pink color from Rebecca Minkoff (ebay) and I can fit my entire life into it. Even my iPad!

The two pictures on the end I pulled down from the internet. I think they represent the color better. This is purse you can put stuff into. I looked at Rebecca Minkoff envelop clutches, but decided they would be useless to me.

Sterling, I strongly recommend spraying your clutch with suede waterproofing spray - it will also prevent random stains from sticking to it. It is also handy to have a little stiff suede brush to brush out whatever sticks to it, although that is probably less likely to happen with a bag than with shoes. Do you have a link or photo of the clutch - I am very curious.

A quick reflection the first half of the capsule challenge:

-- I like a fair amount of variety, and I achieve this through color, pattern, silhouette, and proportion.
-- This is possible in a 30 item capsule, but might be more difficult if I required a greater degree of formality part of the time.
-- I rely on black, and to degree navy, to ground or anchor my outfits.
-- I like looks with an element of high contrast, but currently lack the right white and light colored items to achieve the high-contrast looks I want.
--Shoes are really difficult in rainy, muddy summer weather. No wonder everyone defaults to sneakers here! Now I remember why I've been wearing solid black sport sandals for the past decade. They're a summer shoe that can go almost anywhere and go with almost anything. I still find myself babying my newer leather shoes...
