Smittie - the sweater is going to be donated, but I do often tuck my tops into my skirts. I had tried it with this one, but it just emphasized how tight the sweater was. What is the difference between navy and ink?

Joy, Mainelady, and SarahD8 - thanks!

Celia - your recent WIW both fit that goal very well. I really liked the blazer outfit with the purple. I’m looking forward to seeing more of your outfits as well.

Angie - thanks for the explanation. As I’ve been taking these pictures and thinking about which outfits I like, which I don’t, and why, I’m finding that I prefer the ones with color. Black just seemed easiest to work with as I was building my wardrobe again after having kids. Next step will be adding in makeup and doing something about my hair.

tanstaafl, I'm generally not fond of solid black worn from head to toe. I prefer it broken up, worn as a column of colour with something, with grey and white, with blue, or as a backdrop to a pattern. I like black - and find it perfect in some wardrobe items and as an effective accent. (I wear black). That said, I do think it can look dull and harsh, and does not suit all complexions. FWIW, I think your face looks brighter and prettier in non-black colours, or when black is worn as an accent. To my eye, solid black is best complemented by heavier make-up, statement eyewear, or extremely exuberant hair. Greyscale wears a lot of black - but with heavy specs and a head full of bright red curls, for example.

Another set of really nice outfits! Purple is a great color on you, so I hope you find a substitute for the sweater that fits you more comfortably.
In #2 I really like the blush with the black, especially the necklace. I can’t decide if the color washes you out a bit. I agree with Mainelady that the necklace or some other bit of color near your face can make it work.

In #3, another way to add a bit of lightness/lift to an outfit with flats might be colored footwear. I’m imagining this ensemble with teal oxfords....

#4 is perfect!

You look fab in all these outfits. I enjoy looking at your outfits and comparing notes because I also try to dress on the business end of the business casual without getting too corporate:)
I like the blush sweater and think that the necklace completes the outfit.
It is a shame the purple sweater feels small, I am sure you will find a worthy substitute.

Thank you for adding your beautiful smile! Fabulous on its own! I think all of your outfits fit well and look great! #1 Purple is a good color for you and the scarf is gorgeous. I wouldn’t worry about feeling like a suck up. I’d wear it because it is fab and a reminder of a job well done! #2. I love this combination. The sweater is close to your skin tone, but I think the black necklace balances that. You might also experiment with some scarves, just to add some color at the neckline. #3 blue and gray! The blouse is beautiful and I love the way your necklace fills in the space and follows the shape of the blouse’s neckline. #4 is my favorite! I am a fan of black and white and the pattern on your dress, fit of your jacket and your black tights and shoes create a very professional and polished look. I look forward to seeing what you wear next!

Can you tuck the purple top into your skirt? I think the trend is towards higher rises so I think it would look great. The colour is fab.

The blush looks washed out, but maybe others have differing opinions. Lighting could be the issue.

I really like the blue top + pants outfit. I think the flat booties blend nicely. The necklace and cowlneck add some non-corporate-ness to the outfit.

The last dress is great.

I’d youre unsure about black, try on navy or ink and see if you like it better.

Thanks Toban, Katerina, torontogirl, and Dianna! Everyone here is always so supportive.

Aurore- the scarf was a thank you present from my boss for a presentation I prepared for her to give in India. I feel like a bit of a suck up when I wear it, but I love purple.

Angie - do you just personally dislike too much black or do you think it looks too harsh on me?

That's too bad the sweater of photo #1 is not manageable! The outfit looks great on the photo, especially with that awesome scarf. Very classy.

I also love #4, the pattern of the dress is interesting and definitely prevents the look from being "too black" even with the black tights.

At the end of week 3 I have 13 outfits using 25 pieces of clothing (excluding shoes and scarves and under layers for warmth). Two of these pieces are being donated due to being too tight. The purple sweater in outfit 1 and the black/white striped shirt from week one that I had worn under the blush sweater. I tried to wear it on its own this week, but it didn’t make it out the door. I can make it work standing still, but as soon as I move it starts pulling and gaping at the buttons on the bust. Unfortunately I got dressed in a rush and in the dark for outfit 1 and didn’t notice the problems with the purple sweater until I was at the office.

I am aiming for the business end of the business casual spectrum, without looking too corporate.

1. Purple v-neck sweater, grey herringbone skirt, black tights and heels, purple and gold paisley silk scarf. After all those lovely compliments last week about the fit of my clothes, I started this week with a sweater that is too small. It pulls at the chest and I kept tugging at the sleeves to pull the shoulder seams back into place. I LOVE this color and haven’t found a good replacement for this sweater, but it has to go. The skirt lining also kept riding up on my tights when I walked. I’ll have to see if a slip fixes this issue.

2. Blush sweater, black ankle pants, black heels, black necklace. Is this sweater too close to my skin tone? Is the necklace enough to be my third piece or should I have added a topper or something else?

3. Grey suit, teal cowl neck shell, black ankle boots. Meetings today called for a more formal look. I would have preferred to wear my heels, but three days in a row is too hard on my feet. I need another pair of heels for work.

4. Black/white geometric print dress, black cardigan, black heels. I picked up some sheer hose for this outfit to try to avoid solid black from head to toe, but hated them. They were cheapies, too sheer and itchy. So back to my solid black tights.

And I tried smiling as requested by Mainelady.

As always, any thoughts and suggestions are greatly appreciated!
