Minimalist -- I too suffer from the need to treat my new items as precious. I save things for some unidentified event. Then I donate those same items because (1) they no longer fit; (2) they no longer suit my style; or (3) I just don't like them anymore. It was a problem. I like LaP's suggestion of buying second hand. That really does take care of the "new" hurdle.

You don't have to count bags unless you want to. Each of us has defined our own set of parameters for drafting our lists. Your list looked really good. I would keep some slots open ... just in case. For the next 30 days, this challenge is all about you and what you want to do.

Oh, you include bags and hat in your numbers! What a great hat, too.

What you wrote about treating some items as precious was the final push I needed to join this challenge.

Love your outfit today . That gingham top is the best ! Your list of pieces has a lot of diversity in terms of colour and fabric interest , and should serve you really well.

Yeah, five pairs is a lot of shoes *for me* -- I'm pretty sure that in years prior I didn't even have five pairs of non-gear shoes for summer wear. I never know what to put on my feet in the summer! My solution this year, it seems, is to let my warm-weather shoe capsule explode a little, and I'm sure that by the end of this summer I'll have a better idea of which styles are clear winners for me.

The sunhat was my Mother's Day gift this year -- it's made by a woman in Portland, Maine. My head is pretty much kid-sized (6 7/8) and I spent months searching for a classy summer hat that didn't completely engulf my little noggin. The best part, though, is that it's reversible: tan and blue on this side, cream and red on the other. Two accessories in one!

And, Sterling, YES, lists are so much fun. I even have fun writing my grocery list every week. :)

Sal -- I understand your resistance to finalizing your list. You don't even have to post it if you don't want to. Only a few challenge participants are including gear in their 30 items. I am one of the rare ones. I may come to regret that decision.

I am not including earrings. I wear them every day and I subscribe to Emily's thoughts on the matter of earrings. I did include my tote and a belt.

Footwear seems to be the biggest challenge for all of us. I don't know why this surprises me, but it does. I may learn that shoes are a bigger component of style than I thought. That may be the focus of my future wardrobe building.

Love your WIW and look forward to seeing more posts. I really like that top - it is very modern and the shape is great on you. As a hat lover I am pleased to see you include hats on the list.

I am resisting finalising my list, I remembered a couple more pieces that I would like to include. This is my personality - I don't like being pinned down:)

I am not including gear or jewelry unless I put it on and hang out for the day in it (which could happen to be honest). But being mid winter here outfits have more pieces often so I think it is fair.

In my draft footwear list I had six choices - I may drop or swap one but cannot see myself moving to less than five. If it was summer or spring I would have more I am sure.

I really like your WIW. It is outfit perfection because the hat gives it attitude. I think posting at the end of the week is a great idea. It would be too much of a burden to post every single day.

Did you say you thought you had a lot of shoes? I counted five. I really do not think five pairs of shoes is a lot for 30 days. Shoes are such an important item.

Great list. It was fun developing the list, wasn't it?

Joy -- I know EXACTLY what you mean about wanting higher-rise pants. I'm not sure quite how I managed to wear low-rise pants for so long. I think body shifts and style shifts are working in tandem to reinforce my preference for mid-to-high rises.

Suz -- I realized that, for me, making a gear-heavy list is very easy, but it would run counter to my style goals, which include wearing my "nice" stuff whenever I possibly can!

Emily K -- between my cultural milieu (extremely casual, gear-oriented, plus little kids) and my extreme frugal streak, I have a really hard time wearing new things at first. The only way around this, psychologically (for me at least), is to buy secondhand -- then the "new" hurdle has already been cleared. But I've had very little luck finding what I want secondhand the past year or two, for whatever reason. Again, it may be that my tastes aren't quite as in line with my cohort/locale as they used to be...

Style Fan -- I'm always wowed by other people's jewelry on the forum. Plus, it doesn't take up much space, hardly ever wears out, can often be repaired or re-fitted, and if it's high quality won't depreciate. I see jewelry as a good style investment, but shopping for it is yet another mental hurdle I haven't cleared.

Here's a pic of today's outfit: gingham shirt, linen pants, Everlane slides, and sunhat. I'm going to try to take WIW pics M-F this week and post the whole batch at the end of the week. I probably won't manage to take photos on the weekends, but will mostly be in gear anyway.

I appreciate the thought/effort represented by the emboldened items. I am one who defaults to the more casual outfit and tends to hoard "better" items. My KARA purse is one such item in my 30 X 30 list--I realized that it's a Summer bag and if I don't wear it this year, it'll be a year old next summer and (worst case scenario) might be looking or feeling dated already so I better use it!

This looks like a doable list. I like your idea of the notes in italics and items you may change. This is Day 1 for me and already I wish I had higher rise white jeans. If I find some I may have to switch them out. The right jeans would probably replace 2 pair in my wardrobe, a big plus.

Here's my tentative 30x30 list. After A LOT of thought, I decided not to include gear (too many weather/climate variables since all of my sports take place outdoors), but did include my everyday accessories. I also borrowed Sterling's idea of leaving an open "Wild Card" slot.

I've made a couple notes (these are in italics) of things I already know I would change if I could, or will change if I find just the right thing. I'm not really at the point with my wardrobe where I'm ready to do a shopping fast -- I'm still in the building phase!

Green linen pants (Uniqlo)

Green tank (Uniqlo)

Black silk tank (Grana)

Graphic tee (undecided -- probably Uniqlo)

Blue striped oxford shirt (Land’s End) [would replace with long sleeve linen shirt]

Black/white striped breton (Uniqlo)

Navy linen blazer (Eileen Fisher)

Black cotton cardigan (Everlane) [would replace with white pullover sweater]

Grey field jacket (Madewell) [would replace with cropped white denim jacket]

Jersey midi dress (Hanna Andersson)

Sunhat (Cherry Pat)

Green messenger bag (Tom Bihn)

Black convertible crossbody bag (Fold)

Wild card

I don't really have many of these in Finds -- my wardrobe is not very Find-friendly -- but I'll take some photos of garments later this week if I have time. I'll also try to take WIW photos!

I've consciously included a large (for me) number of footwear and bags. One of my goals, with this 30, is to push myself to wear/use things I've been treating as somewhat precious since I acquired them (those items are in bold). I'm one of those people who often defaults to the most casual option possible, for a lot of reasons. Would be nice to break that habit, to the degree that my lifestyle allows.

Re: jewelry -- I did not include jewelry. It didn't even occur to me to list it, since I've still never really shopped for jewelry. I have two necklaces, both gifts, that I switch between depending on which one works better for that day. I don't really think of them as wardrobe since they're sentimental. And it's not like I'm going to go crazy sneaking all kinds of jewelry into my outfits over the coming month just to add variety. I actually have some aesthetic holes that could easily be filled with specific jewelry pieces: a leather wrap bracelet, a heavy silver cuff, and a larger-scale statement pendant necklace are all on my long-term list, but I haven't been very motivated to shop for them. Maybe this 30 will actually inspire me to diversify! :D
