I like your goal to work on pattern mixing and working with bottoms that you don't grab frequently. I think we're going to learn a lot this month!

Thanks for all the comments! Christina F, this skirt is an old friend. <3 Sterling, I’ll certainly keep it in the closet. Whether or not it stays in the challenge is a different question because, as LBD points out, next week it will be 70 again. I’m glad to have lost the weight to wear it and other old faves again; now I just need to get to the climate that lets me do so.

The purple skirt! I’m glad it’s getting so much love, because that motivates me to do something with it. The pleated skirts I’ve seen in stores, as La Ped mentions, remind me of it, but for the yoke.

I got it as part of an outfit. The sweater wasn’t banded, but it did have a little rolled hem and came mid-hip, so gave the outfit a similar sillouhette to Angie’s post. Except it had shoulder pads, because it was the 80s. That sweater was probably my first laundry disaster ever—the colors from the abstract blocks all ran into each other.

I’ve held onto the orphaned skirt all this time, but haven’t figured out anything else to wear it with. I’ll get digging now, before the weather warms up. My first thought is a patterned lightweight cotton sweater from Laundry with tall brown boots, but maybe I have something not quite so fitted.

Love the skirt story! Keep for sure. Of course, I'm more than half Scottish, so I may be a bit biased when it comes to kilts. I'm especially excited to see that purple pleated skirt in action -- pleated skirts seem to be having a moment, don't they?

YES to that kilt! Look how amazing you look, and look at your huge smile!

I think you're right not to count outerwear, because it's Tampa**. It will probably be 70 in another two weeks.

I like your challenge pieces - I can see that grey skirt being something you might be able to wear into summer months, if it's light enough, especially with Florida air-conditioning. The purple skirt makes me think of the pleated metallic BR skirt that everyone has been loving on YLF - you might find some good outfit inspo there.

That tunic can be a dress or a tunic. You have two pieces in one!

(**My grandparents lived in Tampa when I was a kid, and during the occasional freeze, they would run the sprinklers over their orange trees to keep in the warmth, so the trees wouldn't be injured.)

I like the outfit and I agree that the skirt works with leggings for casual wear. Such a great story behind it!

I do like the jacket as a potential work item but yes, probably not with the skirt.

You even have a little pattern mixing going on with the skirt and the strap of your bag! I like how the tan shades are similar but the geometries contrast.

Thanks, everybody! My big smiles here are probably at my goofy son taking the pictures, but I did like wearing this.

Angie, I love wearing sentimental favorites--they make me feel more "me" than nearly anything I can put on.

Sterling, yes, the length was the question. Now that you say that, I may have a different top I can wear with the skirt to keep it in the challenge.

Kathie, good point about context. The jacket still had tags on it, and I was thinking of it as an office piece, but you're probably right about the skirt for work.

Rachy, you can't have punk without RATE, which is also a personal must for me.

ETA: I don’t buy skirts under 18”. Just measured this one; it’s 18.25”

You look so happy in this outfit! The jacket is fabulous on you, and I love how the bag and pom-pom seem to pick up the green/teal in the skirt. Echoing Cardiff girl- the skirt is a bit shorter than I would wear to work, but I would absolutely wear it for a fun weekend outing, like you have styled here, with leggings.

Thanks Cardiff Girl and Bella!

This was my outfit for Christmas with extended family, except I wore a short-sleeved black top with crystals around the neck. No one said a word about it, so they probably didn’t approve. I wondered about the length of the skirt as I was pulling this together, but once I put that jacket/cardi on, it just all felt so right to me that I couldn’t not wear it.

The skirt is “personal vintage”, to use approprio’s phrase. It’s not as cool as those purple pants, but here’s its story:

Once upon a time, a new concept for retail started, and my mom and older sister went to the first TJ Max we’d ever heard of. They bought this kilt and a few other items. My sister was around 18 and I was about 15. We shared the kilt.

When she married, she took it with her, but then it drifted back to my closet, without the yellow crew neck sweater we usually wore it with. I found other part time partners for it, but left it behind when I went to do research in Berlin.

When I realized I’d be there longer, I picked up some of the clothes I’d stored, and discovered moth holes in the skirt. Horrors! I found a someone in Berlin to cut off the worst holes and use fabric from the bottom to patch a couple holes on top. You might be able to see the patches if you zoom in. I don’t know if I’d buy such a short skirt these days, but I can’t bring myself to part with it.

Wow this looks like such a fun outfit! If your big smile is anything to go by you are enjoying wearing it.The jacket is a lovely shape on you, highlighting your waist. The colours all go well together and the pattern on the skirt gives the otherwise muted palette interest. If I was wearing this outfit I would want the skirt to be a little longer but you have the legs for it so why not!

I’m trying again after my fall challenge kind of petered out at the end. I’m looking forward to having other people with me this time, hope we will all encourage each other. I still don’t expect every day to count, so I want to keep going til I get at least 25 outfits.

The big news here is—brrrrr! Who knows if the snow flurries will actually arrive tomorrow or Thursday (about 10% chance), but for once I’m not sweating, even in fleece-lined tights. This is what I wore to the mall last night, with temps in the low 50s. It got below 40 overnight. This is near the extreme for Tampa (8 years ago it got down to 27). People are setting up props with sprinklers spraying fine mist, in hopes of ice. It will not last. Next week it’s back to 70. Obviously, I need variety in my picks.

My rules
I will count footwear, because I’m looking forward to boots.

I won’t count purses. My bag almost never changes, and if it does, it’s probably because of size.

I won’t count outerwear. I grab a jacket or vest on the way out the door if it’s chilly. It isn’t integral to my outfit, and you’d all get tired of the same pieces.

My palette will be different from last time, with brighter colors. This skirt might not come out again.

Anything I wore for the fall capsule is banned.

Bottoms so far:
purple sweater skirt,
grey T-shirt weight knit skirt,
black flare pants (fabric detail in pic 3)
Those three are all “challenge” pieces that I want to wear, in theory, but don’t actually reach for. Two are quite old, one was purchased last year (but is not available online to make a find) and still has tags.
Plaid leggings
Black & white sweater skirt

Tops should include lots of patterns, because I want to practice mixing and hope to get feedback on that. I have one “challenge” piece here, that might count as a dress instead of a tunic.

Comments, critique, and discussion, especially on the outfit pictured, or what to wear with the “challenge” pieces, are appreciated.
