Checking back in! And I'm planning to do a separate post for the first 10 days of 30x30.

@Shevia: I hung most stuff towards the back of the closet, and I neatly folded a smaller pile and put it on the shelf with the BFs sweaters. He hasn't said anything yet, and probably hasn't even noticed, although I try to be respectful of his clothing-space.

@FashIntern Rabbit fur and angora hair make my eyes look like twin Jell-O shots. Even if they did not...

There is a terrible video on the internet, I think PETA circulated it, of how angora fur is harvested. A man is yanking out handfuls of hair, very roughly, from an angora rabbit while it screams in pain. I watched maybe twenty seconds, and cried buckets. I believe the video was shot in Asia, but honestly, it could be anywhere in this world. It doesn't matter. For that reason, I won't even resell vintage angora online.

I have a couple of mocknecks, and those work fine :) But having an entire turtleneckectomy and making the sweaters crewnecks would be even more versatile for me. I've hacked off my own, on tight knits, for loungewear, and wore them until they got holes in other places. I want to keep these pretty.

I liked your comment on Angie’s post, and have a couple questions /thoughts (because when I like something, I think about it, and find questions)

I have the same preferences for (against) wools as you do, also not only where there is skin contact or if the fibers get in my nose. I can tolerate the types you listed as well. You me too Ex angora is cruel. Do you mean to you, because of the high fuzz factor, or is there something about the way the animals are raised /treated that I need to know about?

I don’t think of you and me as similar, but I can certainly relate to what you said about being too slick in menswear and too approachable in today’s outfit. You were also so on target in a comment to me a while ago about looking soft or like a pushover that I thought it must come from personal experience.

About the turtleneckotomy, how are mock turtlenecks for you? That might be a simpler procedure.

Fashintern: Well, go get me a knife and fork so I can eat my words! I'm laughing, because actually, I love all 45 - now 37 - items. I was tempted to leave things at 45, but I want the forced creativity of putting together some nice outfits by reusing a smaller number of items.

Sarah D8: Yes! I do have duplicates or several similar items in a category. The short-sleeve bodysuits, I wear alone, or layered with other tops and toppers, and I also wear them for dance classes, if I know I'm going out afterwards, because they look a little nicer than my exercise tanks (and my bestie and I a Saturday post-class lunch thing that seems to be happening frequently).

My black leggings are for dance classes, loungewear, sleeping this week (because it's been in the teens at night), and for wearing under long tops and dresses. They're in regular and frequent rotation. I expect I will be replacing a pair sometime in March.

I'm glad you noticed this, because I really didn't, until you pointed it out :D

Joy: your suggestions are great! I decided to including dance-to-streetwear gear in my capsule, which is why I have three pairs of leggings. In the past, it's always been easy for me to say, 'well, that's for class, and that's for this other thing, and therefore doesn't count against my items", when in reality there are a couple days of the week where all I do is wear dancewear, go get food, run errands, work at home. So I feel like I should include those items.

Rachylou: I had to google waterfall hooks - that's a fantastic idea, and I think I might try that out soon. I'm also mildly obsessed with Lisa P's clothing rack that I seem to remember her posting last year.

Sterling: Thank you for the boost, and for keeping us all challenged. I think this is going to be a lot of fun!

Angie, Toban, Katerina, Suz, and Bonnie: Thank you for your awesome words - I'm going to refer back to these when I get lazy and ponder bailing in a few days.

I seem to re-arrange my clothing periodically (every few weeks) by color and type. Sometimes it's all one color, sometimes it's by type, sometimes it's by both. It keeps me from forgetting some of the items in my closet.

I have never made it through the duration of any capsule challenge, but I want this month to be my first success <3

This is a gorgeous colour palette and I can totally relate to the indecision. But I love where your reasoning has taken you. This is probably how I'd be doing it too -- (not that I am brave enough to do it!!) -- a lot of emotion combined with careful analysis of weather report.

Wow, what a beautiful color palette you have landed on! I agree with the comments above that these items look so nice hanging together in color order on the closet rail!

I think it's interesting that even after the cuts you have made you often have multiple items in the same category of the same color (e.g., 2 black bodysuits). I'm curious whether this is a matter of avoiding laundry bottlenecks (bc you know these items in these colors are a staple for you), you intend to see which of the similar items you reach for most and possibly pare down, or the items that sound similar in these brief descriptions actually have distinct outfit uses for you.

(That's a genuine question and isn't meant to contain any whiff of judgement -- after all, my previous capsule included three white blouses, which I would say helped prevent laundry bottlenecks, and three black cardis that I use in very different ways bc they are all cut differently.)

Good morning! and thanks for all the great responses!

The first thing I thought of when I got up this morning was...

1) "Hey, what's the projected weather for Atlanta this month?"
Turns out, after this week, it's highs in the 40s-50s. I pulled the heavy turtleneck from the roster, and the lightweight green sweater. I'll be wearing that green sweater a lot this spring.

2) 25 tops means almost a month of no repeats, which is overkill. I've pulled the two tanks, one of the s/s bodysuits, and the floral top. Again, I know I'll be wearing those a lot this spring.

3) I don't need 7 skirts for one month. Skirts are a once-a-week, on average, item for January. I cut it down to two black skirts, one suede, one leather.

4) I cut the sleeveless dress, because it's not going to be warm enough.

I kept the longsleeve dress. It's convertible, and can be a draped top, split 'pants' or a knee-length sarong dress.

5) ETA: I also cut the teal silk jacket topper (that matches the teal skirt). Again... it will be warmer next month.

6) I was playing with the idea of cutting at least one pink top, but I want the challenge of wearing both the button-down, and the long-sleeve top. I love to look at them, but I'm not as good at putting them on and wearing them out.

I'm going to look at a few more things today, and will keep updating my numbers in the original post. But I feel pretty good with 37 items, because that includes dance gear worn outside of the classroom, and at least two very dressy outfits for public performances.

I am very excited to see how I can pull in color via accessories.

(ETA #2: for accountability purposes, I folded up the cut items that won't wrinkle, and I hung the delicate stuff - they're all hidden among my boyfriend's things, where they're out of sight, out of mind).

I am so sorry to laugh, but you are so FUNNY. The next thirty days will be a very welcome distraction and a great start for 2018.

Remember there are no rules. If you put together a cohesive Winter Wardrobe that exceeds 30, but meets all your needs, then you have already succeeded at the Challenge. YAY you.

And the most fascinating thing is how different all of our lives are. Our wardrobes reflect so much more than just body coverings. Our personalities shine through. To anyone that mocks my interest in fashion, they don't see the power of a well curated wardrobe and how much it reflects on the wearer!!!!!

I am extremely interested in the velvet leggings. I dream of owning velvet leggings. I hope you don't remove them.

You might go with one skirt, pair of leggings and all your jeans and your black velvet pants for bottoms. The long sleeved dress for the season.
Add your long sleeved tops and indoor toppers. By my count, this brings you to 22 items. You may want to add a few pairs of shoes and a couple of bags

That approach worked well. This time around, I'm coming from the opposite direction and am starting with some things I really like but never manage to wear. Then I added a couple more bottom pieces. I have a bunch of cotton sweaters and other tops, so I'm going to see which I reach for when the chips are down. I posted about it earlier today.

BTW, organizing everything by color makes your closet pretty to look at!

Hahaha! I recognize that very well It's just like me, in November, putting together my first challenge. I got some great advice from numerous people, including your own sweet self. These were your words then:

Take everything out of your closet, and put back the things you
absolutely love to wear. The stuff you absolutely can't wait to put
on, and walk out the door in. The stuff you feel like a million bucks
in.

I doubt you're as confused as I was then, but you still might find some of the advice I got helpful. https://youlookfab.com/welookf.....heellllllp

Me, yesterday afternoon, on Sterling's post...
"... I like the idea of build-as-you-go. I think I'm going to reference Lisa from Shopping Brake, and pack up everything into a couple of carry-on suitcases that I have. I'll pull things out and put them on the closet rail as I wear them. We'll see how that goes!"

Me, later yesterday afternoon...
"Hmm. Some of this stuff is going to get wrinkled if I put it in the carry-on. Why don't I just pull half a dozen things and hang them, and then start adding from there?"

Ten minutes later...
"Seems silly to put this stuff in the carry-on, when I know I'll pull it out in another week and have to re-steam. Why don't I just put the small, carefully curated items front and center, and put everything else back along the rail?"

(I think you know where this is going).

Me, last night....
"How did I get to 22 items already? Why is this skirt- no. NO. YOU PUT THAT SKIRT BACK AT THE BACK OF THE RAIL, YOUNG LADY. WE ARE ADDING LATER. NOT NOW."

Me today...
"OMG THE SKIRT IS BACK AND IT BROUGHT ITS OTHER SKIRT-FRIENDS".

Me, 30 minutes ago...
"Okay. I'm just going to put everything in here and count after"

Me: 25 minutes ago.
"....how did I get to 45?!"

My list is below. I did not count: Anything I use to layer, that is also used for exercise, loungewear, or as undergarment layers (i.e., not standalone items). Shoes. Outdoor toppers that are removed once indoors. Cardigans, because those are loungewear.

What I did count: Some eventwear, including a couple of dresses, some fancier skirts, and a two-piece silk suit that is too dressy worn together, but great as separates. I have at least one dressy event a week this coming month, but seven skirts + two dresses seems a bit excessive, so I'm going to cull this down a bit. I also counted any dancewear that I would wear out in public after to run errands.

ETA: I'm re-working these numbers. Changes are indicated with **

Total Count: 37 (down from 45 on January 2nd)
