Oh gosh I read the title of this & thought you were asking about what to pack for 30 (plane) flights in a month. I was about to say you need to quit your job if they're making you do that, lol!

Taking the stairs is a good idea but I agree that you need to pace yourself at first - make it a habit, rather than torture.

These are great suggestions! And helpful in keeping me sensible!

I had kinda used the 30 number as a joke re: the capsule challenges. And LOL, Laura, sorry I’m a travel disappointment!

I set up my Fitbit! I’ve barely tapped into its features but am psyched up about using it for accountability. I agree with you, Staysfit that it will be more important to increase my brisk walking and some low- impact cardio rather than stairs per se. Now that days are longer I can do more of it more enjoyably outdoors.
I set a target of just 10 “ flights” day instead of an aggressive “ stair workout “ along with getting up and moving more often. I’m not using a reminder buzz system yet, but may try to see what kind of reminder works best for me.

Use a foam roller, and start doing the Pigeon stretch if you’re serious about doing this! Also, you need to stretch your quads. Going down stairs is harder than going up. This isn’t the exercise of choice for someone with hip issues. How about looking at some YouTube videos for some Takada Intervals that don’t stress knee or hips? DH has put together some great workouts that are core heavy but still pack a punch and raise his heart rate into the 160 - 170 range, which is peak for him. That type of interval burns calories quickly, and keeps burning them for hours afterwards. Do them two or three times a week, and then park your car further from the front door, and add 30 minutes of walking to your regime a couple days a week. The Intervals take 20 minutes, if even, and this would be a gentler way to go. Good luck!

Absolutely agree that starting in with 30 flights a day is NOT a good idea if you don’t already take stairs regularly. Please work your way up to it. I take stairs whenever I can, but even so I only hit 30 flights on days when I go running on hills or hiking in our hilly area. On days when I’m less active, I’ll aim to get at least a dozen flights in, which is enough to get you working a bit more without risking injury from overuse.

Ditto to the suggestion for using that Fitbit!

It's just like every other habit. You have to force yourself to do it every day until it's second nature.

I almost never take the elevator at work - the only exceptions are if I am carrying something very heavy or sometimes if I am with other people who want/need to take the elevator (I don't believe in forcing my weird stair-climbing habits on others.) Anyway it's pretty much second nature for me now to use the stairs. It might have been easier for me because my apartment is a fourth floor walkup so I'm kind of used to it.

I'm not sure I'd do the thirty flights all at once though, honestly. It's hard on the knees, particularly if you're wearing street shoes and not workout shoes.

I would just walk quicker rather than focus on stairs. Good foot wear is key for stairs! I’m a big walker, and do lots during my normal working day. That said we’ve lots of stairs at home too! I hope your plans go well.

My personal opinion is that you would probably do better sprinting up a few flights of stairs daily than to climb 30 flights. Going both up and down stairs is hard on the knees. I was big on stair climbing a number of years ago which resulted in severely tight IT bands which took over a year to resolve. So if you want the challenge of walking up and down 30 flights of stairs a few times a week (I would not make this a daily habit) you must stretch afterwards. You might want to change it up, some days walk up a few flights and some days sprint if you can.

If you have an iPhone, there's a fun app called The Walk where there's a scenario your character is put in, and to unlock the clues / keep the story going, you have to walk a certain amount. Right now I've got two classes with an hour break in between (too short to go home, too long to just sit around) so I've been spending most of it walking around campus, working my way through The Walk episodes.

No kidding about the computer time in medicine!
In addition to starting slowly I would caution you to be sure your footwear is supportive. Climbing stairs in non supportive shoes is how I ended up with a peroneal tendonitis (aka ankle tendonitis) that took forever to go away.
Good luck in your quest to add more movement during the day.

IME, yes, climbing stairs and walking more does a LOT to keep you in shape.

What about doing a few flights of stairs right before lunchtime and then taking a short stroll outside (15 minutes) after eating? I used to go to an acupuncturist, and she told me that a light stroll after eating is excellent for the digestion. I used to do it religiously but have gotten out of practice due to the winter weather. Your post reminds me that I need to get back to this! Since you're in a large building, you can walk the halls if the weather is crummy. I notice a huge difference doing this.

Really, even just a flight or two every now and then (a few times a day) will make a difference, I think.

As Elizabeth P said, you really just have to do it. Once you make it routine, it will be much easier. How about you formulate a plan here on YLF and then tell us when you'll start, and then you can post a follow-up as to how it's going after a week? Then you will feel like we're going to hold you accountable.

@unfrumped you have inspired me! I am trying to lose excess weight and the morning workouts are not doing the job - great idea to use my office time to take the stairs (I work on the 6th floor.) I commit to taking the stairs 3 times a day to start - that's 36 flights a day!

Elizabeth has a very good point to start slowly and work up to doing more. I was so impressed with the Japanese in Tokyo subway stations. Not only do they climb lots of stairs, they never touch the railing ( so as not to get germs, l'm told). In a hospital, you may want to wear soft, thin gloves if you reach for the railing. This is a great idea for a workout.

I have a Fitbit I’ve not revved up to my phone yet.

I DO have hip bursitis and a hamstring injury ( now much better) and these are things that have done a job on my activity.
That is why I was thinking along lines of Elizabeth P’s suggestions, to do a couple flights here and there throughout the day to keep up metabolism and be that thing of burning even 100 extra calories a day over a year's time makes a difference.

This could work out super well but cautionary tale, when I was in my forties I did half an hour of stairs every other day for three years and it took five years for the coincidental bursitis to subside. I suppose you wouldn't be doing them that intensely, like I was.

Down stairs can be really hard on the knees.

For the past ten I've relied on daily walks of at least an hour in beautiful places, preferably with some uneven terrain and varied surface.

Hate to be cliche, but just do it. I flat out refuse to take the elevator at my office, unless I'm carrying something that might be a tripping hazard. Sometimes I take the elevator up in the am, because we need our security pass to access the stairwell, and it's buried under coats, scarves at that point.

How about starting out with not taking the elevator whenever you are going 3 or less floors? Then next week make it 4, the next 5, etc. Or whatever works. Soon it'll become a habit. And you'll feel much better for it!

I actually try to get up and do 2-3 flights several times a day when I have a very desk heavy day. When I need to go the printer, or the washroom, I'll do it via a floor three above me. Up, across, down, then to my destination. When I remember to do this, I definitely feel more energetic at the end of the day. Must go do that now!

I need a challenge of 30 stair flights a day for 30 day’s! But I’m a bit unsure I can do it. Of course, if I count going DOWN stairs it’s more likely.
I need more excercise, and one problem is trying to do it all before or after work but being somewhat sedentary all day. I feel my health/ weight would do better with more activity throughout day or multiple 10-15 min things. Doctoring involves so much computer time these days!
My work takes me to 10 different floors of the hospital and the elevators are vey slow. Yet there’s a tendency to feel that’s always faster, or worry about arriving of breath. But I’m “ sitting “ on a perfect intermittent excercise opportunity.
Things I know can work are to do a few flights ( if going from 1-10th, for example), and then finish on elevator, yes DO walk down stairs as there are actually different muscle groups in play, and so on.
Has anyone got some tips on how to become s good stair- climber and get over the mindset of taking the elevator? I feel that if I could do even a third or half of the flights I travel every single day, that’d go a long way toward reversing my middle- aged creep.

Thoughts and suggestions welcome!
