I went back to the same guy, explained what I hated about my hair, and he took a little fullness from the sides, and I like it a thousand times better now. It's still short over my ears, but the general shape is better and much more modern. I'll take a picture later but whew.

I agree with everyone. Find some really cute earrings and some hair gel. Try a new stylist. It really can be liberating to change.

Get some sort of wax or paste, to make it piece-y. Also find a new stylist.

I so sympathize!!!!! I've been going to my guy for about 35 years, and he did fine on my old cut that I'd had for too many years but several times I've hated what he's done this past year when I grew it out a bit. Same guy do you think? I've decided I want the lesser bulk of a pixie, so next month I will go in armed with a photo.

How about wearing earrings? One reason I want to cut my hair is that with longer hair, my earrings are invisible.

Thanks to both of you. This guy has been cutting my hair for about thirty years, and these past two cuts are some of the only half-dozen I haven't been happy with. I actually do have a stylist in mind but it's hard to break up, you know? When I went shorter than usual (I've always had pretty short hair) in the spring it felt liberating. I was embracing my inner Judi Dench. Maybe I'll just try to funk it up and change my attitude instead of coloring it.

So frustrating. Growing your hair out from a short cut takes a long, long time. I would think about changing stylists next time, and bringing photos also helps. That way you can get a discussion started about what is actually possible for your hair at this time, and how it could be adapted.

In the meantime, I might wait before making another change. At least with this stylist. In fact, I might start inquiring around, asking women whose haircuts you like where they get them done -- and going to a stylist for a consultation. Explain why you don't like your current cut and perhaps this new stylist can talk about face shape, etc. and what will work best on you.

I don't think your face looks "fat" in the avatar, and the cut looks cute from what I can see...but then, I am obviously biased toward short hair, LOL.

Your haircut is cute...I do understand how you have an image in your mind and the image doesn't translate to the stylist view..I guess I would either change stylist or stay away from the scissors until I had it the length I wanted..
With your current unhappiness with the cut, I guess I would refrain from coloring until it grew out...Hair will always grow...

I've just gotten my second way-too-short haircut in a row. I spent the summer growing it out, and somehow he didn't understand that I'm letting it grow LONGER, even though I said that three times. Now the top is longer than I started with in June, but the pieces over my ears are right back up to the same place. It makes my face look even fatter, which is why I've been letting it grow. At this point, I feel so bad about my hair that I'm contemplating coloring it, or highlighting it, or going auburn... It looks just like my blurry avatar photo, still, after almost three months of growing it out. Would coloring it distract from it being manly over the ears?
