Like many above, I expected a cute, well-produced, light movie, nothing more. What a surprise.</p> <p>I had had a horrific work day that I may talk about in a separate post - egregious ageism and sexism situation (resolved this morning. Offending/offensive party fired over the weekend, and off to "pursue other opportunities"). So, this movie was especially moving. Lou and I both teared up during America Ferrara's speech. We both loved it and laughed a lot (and even cried a little). Jamie is now threatening to get out his guitar and sing the Ken song to me. </p> <p>There were so many little lines and details that would be easy to miss, I would definitely consider seeing it again. We both LOLed at all the little mansplaining vignettes (the indie rock one about Stephen Malkmus was particularly pertinent to me!). Brilliant casting (Alan! Rhea Perlman! Weird Barbie!) and what an incredible testament to the range of the two lead actors. She had gone with friends opening weekend but indulged her mom by going with me this afternoon. I went in knowing I’d love it. I managed to avoid reviews and spoilers so knew very little except that the soundtrack has been playing non-stop around here. I loved it even more than I thought I would!</p> <p>I laughed out loud too many times to count. Gerwig at the helm and impeccable casting - Michael Cera as Alan!! - made for an excellent movie. What a ride! I also cried. America Ferrera’s character was sooo relatable!</p> <p>And can I be honest that I’ve never been a Ryan Gosling fan and I’m Canadian! But he converted me - he was so good. Simu Lee, Kate McKinnon and the whole cast - Rhea Perlman! - just amazing. The discontinued dolls were also brilliant. So clever and funny - brilliant marketing too.</p> <p>I have been eagerly awaiting the movie - had delays getting there so had been trying to avoid spoilers. Robbie and Gosling are two of my most favourite actors and I love Gerwig films. Lots of hilarious moments but I also found it unexpectedly touching. The moment where it becomes clear that it’s the mom, not the daughter, who has been playing with Stereotypical Barbie and whose sadness has opened the portal between the worlds; the conversation where America Ferrera describes herself as “dark and weird” and her daughter enthusiastically endorses this; and the ending. And they were standing tall, you know?</p> <p>Many great moments but when Barbie and Ken stopped to admire the billboard of "the supreme court" was a personal fave. And then continued to for most of the movie, but, oh well. I also loved that in the last scene she was wearing pale pink Birkenstocks.&nbsp;</p> <p>If you saw it, what did you like...or dislike?
