I have the analytical geeky gene! Glad you shared. What's so funny about numbers is that 24 seems quite a few items, but then when I look at my shopping habits, I bought 5 last month (6 if you count a loungewear addition), while staying in budget, so clearly 24 would be a huge drop for me! I feel like I'm out of the wardrobe building stage now, so I ought to be able to manage an annual item count limit, but I'm resisting it. Not sure why! So for this year I'm doing 1 in/1 out, which does make me pickier at least (I'm wondering if this month will also see me bring home 5-6 pieces), and next year I'll probably graduate to a limit like you. I think your template could be very useful to me as well, although I'd want to tweak it a bit obviously. Lots to ponder, as I go run some errands!

Jewell, you might be interested in this sewing blog's '6 pac' wardrobe building strategy: the idea is to create a mini-capsule every season of 6 clothing items. The focus is on neutrals as building blocks to support your closet, and in the beginning at least she's very into 'column of colour' looks, but if you've already got your neutrals covered, you could re-imagine it in other ways too! It made me realise I'd like to have 1 of each of my favourite categories in grey & navy (& now taupe too), which makes my wardrobe function very nicely.

Thanks Mo!
This is what I have been aiming for ever since you began writing your posts about what we actually need and get to wear each season.
I have reached similar conclusions about the number of new items I am comfortable purchasing each month/year.
2014 is the start of putting this plan into action, although I have had to 'carry-over' a few out of season buys from last year, so I will be hopefully be actually purchasing even less than 24 this year, all being well.
I also needed to establish my style descriptors/goals to prepare for this second stage of 'wardrobe maintenance/ upkeep'.

Thanks, guys, glad you enjoy some of my numerical insights.
Jewell, yes! I debated calling it a seasonal capsule, but that seemed a bit of a stretch. But certainly it's more than one outfit, if not a full blown capsule.
Suz, interestingly I think I could only get here after a year or two of more concentrated buying to overhaul the wardrobe. Not sure I could start from scratch on such limited buying. But then, I'm not a minimalist
It's perfect for me for updating and keeping things current, though!

This is SUPER useful, Mo. Thank you.

As someone who's been on what sometimes feels like a nonstop buying spree for the past few years just building a closet from scratch, it is SO reassuring to know that I can pretty much move forward by thinking in terms of "a new outfit per season." It's a really useful way to look at it. For me, I think the turnover would be just about perfect -- things would be wearing out and/ or feeling dated just as I was ready to replace them. The cycle of in-out would be manageable.

I agree with what Jewell said as well -- this would be great information for someone trying to build a "capsule" wardrobe from scratch.

I'm back to add that this break down could prove extremely useful for someone trying to build a remixable wardrobe. For example, if the shopper chooses a color palette for purchases, then 4 or more outfits could be created from a single season's 1 topper, 2 shirts, 1 bottom, 1 shoe, and 1 accessory. Go a step further and combine two seasons (like spring and summer) by shopping within the same palette and they'd have three times as many potential outfits at the very least. The crazy side of me wants to create a visual to illustrate this idea- lol

I also like that this breakdown could be adapted for more or less purchases. For a 12 in 12 plan, just combine seasons: spring/summer and fall/winter.

I like your analysis Mo. I'm on a 24 plan too, but I've really only thought it out seasonally. For Jan-March, I'm focusing on things to wear in spring. If I see something I really like, I will buy out of season though.

Jewell, I do include replacements. I have a new white tee (to upgrade the one that's showing a few seasons' wear) on my list this year for instance as one of my 8 shirts. I don't stick strictly to the guidelines no matter what. A closet is fluid, and surprise sales can change things up (like buying the Spiegel leather jacket last fall days before I moved to FL!). But this is a very good framework for me and I don't stray too far. Underpinnings and loungewear I don't include on the list (or workout wear, etc.).
It makes my closet work for me much better. ;)

Interesting! I love these wardrobe analyses of yours. If you've been spreading purchases out this way, then you're an absolute genius. I might use this breakdown to take another look at my shopping lists for the year. I know off the top of my head that I have way more than four pairs of shoes planned for the year.

Another question: Do you include replacements for worn out items in your 24 item limit?

As I was lying in bed trying to fall asleep last night I was thinking about my closet, as I often do. Usually I try and imagine an outfit for the next day, which I was. But also I was ruminating on the purchase rate and size of my closet. I know, I've gone over this before. But something else struck me.
I've decided that roughly 24 pieces each year is a purchase rate I can live with. Gives me enough newness while not letting my closet spin out of control. Also this turns over my closet in 5 or 6 years, wear and purge rates being equal. That equates to about an item every other week.

I was also thinking on what categories I'm buying in, and how much. For instance, 8 shirts, 4 shoes, etc etc.
This is the part that struck me - seasonally, these numbers equate to an outfit head to toe. Here's what I mean: 8 shirts means 2 each for spring, summer, fall, and winter. 4 shoes means one pair for each season. Sandals for summer, flats for fall, boots in winter, heels or espadrilles maybe in spring. Then I add one bottom: pants for winter, skirt for spring, shorts for summer, maybe another skirt or a dress for fall. Buy a coat for winter, jacket for spring, light sweater for summer, heavy sweater for fall. You get where I'm going? Add the accessory (hat for summer, scarf for winter, bag in spring, fab belt in fall for instance).

Head to toe each season you have:
1 topper
2 shirts
1 bottom
1 shoe
1 accessory

x 4 seasons = 24.

So I've been equally spreading my purchases through the seasons with this number to create full outfits without even realizing it. Awesome!

Yeah, I know it might not get your motor running quite like it did mine, but in case you share the analytical geeky gene, I thought I'd share
