abc, you could decide to do multiples of 7, in which case 217 is a lovely number. Actually, multiples of 7 in a wardrobe would make lots of sense, given that there's 7 days in a week...

Math nerd checking in. Maybe after I cull before our pending move I will be brave enough to count. But then does that mean if I am indeed at a number like 217 can I ADD something, haha?!

Great job Laura. I am totally LOL over the numbers , multiples of twelve! And then Carter, with the even 240 or 250.
I am impressed with your item count. Interesting to see you have nearly the same number of tops (60) as compared to all of your bottoms (50 ish). I think my ratio is similar- although it seems that having several tops to go with one bottom would be more natural making that raitio to 2-3 tops to a bottom. I guess you would add sweaters to the tops which would make it closer to 2:1. And also toppers would add even more variety.
I have to agree with you and stays fit about Blazers- I find them constricting and only have toppers that I can move in or wear cardigans in their place as well. I will have to consider ponte next time a topper is on my shopping list.
I think a list like is critical when buying - it really helps you see where the holes are and what categories you do not to add to.

I'm noting your numbers with interest. I haven't yet counted what I have, but as a preliminary step, I'm writing down the number of items in each of my capsules. That means items actually worn, not just theoretical! After a full year of doing this, I'll run the tallies and probably institute a one in/one out rule. I'll be interested to see what the numbers will be for my four-season wardrobe.

Dimity, since moving mid-year to a warmer microclimate I suspect that even with the stuff I bought this summer my hot weather capsule is a bit spare. But now I live in a house with air conditioning so it's not as dire a problem as it was at my old place. We get such inconsistent summer that it seems like a waste to spend too much money on it.

Staysfit - sets of thirteen would be awesome. They'd be prime! (lolz bad math jokes...) I wish I'd kept the previous versions of this from when I was formulating it earlier this year. I started from what I really had and then looked at each category asking myself if it really needed to be that big or that small. I had a lot - A LOT - of cardigans, I think because I tend to only wear certain colors with certain other colors. Even given that I had too many.

Blazers: I used to have a bunch but never wore them. I got rid of most of them. Then I discovered ponte blazers last year and bought an embarrassing number of them. Nearly as comfy as cardigans and sharper looking; I'm a fan.

Carter, you and I could start a new joint fashion blog - we'll call it Fashion by the Gross. *cymbal*

(Thank you, I'll be here all week. Try the veal.)

Maybe I'll shoot for 20 dozen...240 sounds good! 250 would be okay as well, but I can tell you with absolute certainty that I will not accept 239, 241, 247, etc:-)

Laura, I am impressed with your number counts. I think I may go count up what I have and see how it compares. Even though Pree, you and I have similar count totals, I am curious where the differences lie. For example, I know that I use cardigans for toppers and don't own a single blazer at this time. In fact, I have had so much trouble finding blazers that fit, that I haven't had one in several years.

Also, I wouldn't dare count my fashion boots/shoes in my totals. It would throw my numbers much higher than I want to admit!

I like that you have an idea that you want to keep things in counts of dozens. If I did that, I would end up counting by the bakers dozen!

That sounds like a nice number, lots of variety but not so much that you forget what you've got. My list would be more hot-weather oriented but I can totally see this working.

OK, want to hear something really funny? I posted the above comment, and then realized that 228 was 19 dozen and wouldn't it be nice if I could get it down to 18 dozen, because that's much tidier sounding. So I just spent the last 10 minutes monkeying around with my list until I could get rid of 12 imaginary items of clothing.

So now the title of this post is wrong - it's 216 items.

Thistle, it's definitely been useful to formulate the list, and it helps me see where I have gaps or can cut back. It doesn't always reflect exactly what I've got in my wardrobe, as things come in or out, but it's pretty close. Sometimes I want a little more variety, especially on the extremes of the seasons - really hot or really cold.

Rachylou, I do too - you know how they have those garden tours sometimes? I want a closet tour.

Carter, my last 'official' tally was 219, so yes, I've added 9 items to the list since summer.
3 were leggings, which I didn't have any of before (and arguably could
be excluded since they're undergarments for me). [Re your comment
somewhere else about numbers, I feel a lot happier with a count of 228
than 219 - 219 was still a multiple of three, but 228 is a multiple of
12, and I was aiming for x-dozens when I started these list in the first
place (at first a gross, until I rapidly realized that 144 items was
not gonna cut it for me).]

I agree with Rachylou, it's so useful to see what others have in their closets. As I recall, our total numbers were pretty close last time. Although you've increased by a few, I think, I have unfortunately blown past you. I am NOT counting until after my end of the year cull though. The charity pick up is Jan 2...hooray!

I made some changes, after reviewing everything - increased the amount of sweaters, which the change of seasons has made obvious was way too small before. I reorganized how I was listing tops and pants and increased the total number of pants/jeans a tad to reflect reality.

The current total number is 228, which includes shoes and outerwear but doesn't include PJs or workout gear (except sneakers). Here's the whole list in case someone else finds it helpful:
