I like classic clothing and bought good quality classic pieces, so it’s not really a question of not liking something, it’s more about trying to figure out how to wear it in a way that feels current. My shopping excesses were too many short sleeve woven tops and too many purses and shoes. An ankle injury cured my shoe problem; I donated almost everything except classic flats, kittens and low block heels. Years of a no buy on woven tops is slowly whittling down the rest. In terms of adding new things, I just stay on budget. And continue to buy good quality mostly natural fiber pieces. That limits the churn.

I think so long as you still like the stuff and have the room to store it that’s all good. That’s funny about pencil skirts. They have never worked well for me, I have probably only owned two as I thought they look elegant on others and wanted to look like that too. The second one I bought in 2013 because it was black with cobalt swirls, a favourite colour, thankfully on sale for $10. After wearing only 3 times (never reach for it) I finally edited it out, thinking it’s ridiculous how long this thing has sat here. So even if they come back I have learned they are not for me.

SarahD8: I loved those wool shorts last time around and sale stalked the new versions until a pair hit my price target. I think if you wanted a pair you would find several options.

Everyone: Thanks for the encouragement. I sometimes feel like I am swimming against the current in not constantly purging my wardrobe, but just when I am tempted something I haven’t worn in ages pops back up again. Based on what is currently hanging untouched, I predict a resurgence of pencil skirts!

GREAT argument for the buy-and-hold strategy here. I especially love the story about your renewed brown complement.

I kind of want a pair of 90s wool shorts...I didn't have any the first time around. My first-year college roommate wore that style a lot. She was from Seattle (I was not), very sophisticated, and wore only black and charcoal gray. We were not close lol but I do appreciate some aspects of her fashion sense even now.

Ancients can be useful. I'm wearing a cardigan that I got in Norway in 1988 right now. It works over my pjs as a bed jacket and keeps me cozy while I check out YLF.

AWESOMELY impressive that you're wearing some '90s stash, cat2!

It's interesting how our style moods shift, resulting in wardrobe items going in and out of favour. We wear them - leave them for a while - and wear them again! You are wise to have kept those items. A quirky WELL DONE!

Btw, we have walk-in with closet doors! The only thing on display are my bags. Granted, it was recently custom-made with the remodel.

AND, you might find perfect stirrup pants ;)

We don’t have a walk in, and I always envied people who do. But after this chat I am realizing that being able to slide the doors shut and not see everything I own might actually be more calming!

Sounds feasible! I’m only using our own beautiful walk-in-wardrobe as my 3 adult children have all left stuff in our home which takes up space, since none of them own a home yet. In fact DD2 just rediscovered about 10 items of “work” clothing in a forgotten drawer recently- she did not take them with her March 2024 to do her Masters in a different university city, then when she came back March 2025 she didn’t know if she had given them away, and was delighted when I, tidying up recently, said “Are these your clothes?” As she and partner are hoping to buy a house soon at least that might be one of the 3 that I can say “Take all your stuff to your own house”!

Jenni: I have a 60s tract house with 60s sliding door closets. I put out of season shoes in fabric shoe bags and toss them into baskets on the closet floor. I have underbed storage for garments and have commandeered an old TV armoire we weren’t using. That is where I hide stuff not my current size or that I am not currently excited about. As I have been wearing stuff out and not replacing it, I have been freeing up space to do things like move my coats out of the coat closet into my main closet.

Ha to the stirrup pants! I just adored the stirrup jeans I got when I was 24- but I am 64 now so it is 40 years ago! Unlikely to look as good now, LOL.
I know how you manage your wardrobe and applaud it but do wonder how many pieces you have overall. It sounds like a lot.

Suz:

I loved my Betsy Johnson dresses!

The older pieces that hit my mental flashbacks were my 80s black wool trouser style shorts and my best ever wool stirrup pants. And an early 90s Laura Ashley black velvet dress. The current versions are Vince plaid wool shorts and a Johnny Was burnout velvet dress. Fortunately for all of us, I haven’t found any stirrup pants!

That's so interesting, cat2. How fortunate you were able to use your older things in fun new ways. Lots of 90s flashbacks! I suddenly missed a Betsy Johnson dress from the 90s this year. It would not have worked on me any more, anyway for a variety of reasons -- but I remembered the feeling of wearing it and knew it would have fit right in with current styles.

The theme for 2025 is being really grateful I kept some things I hadn’t been wearing much:

My 1990s tanks were great for layering under a couple of blouses with sheer sleeves and my quirky collection of open work knits.

My ancient set of brown shoes (loafers, skimmers and ballet styles) were great when brown popped up again. All I had to add were two purses and a belt.

I was really glad I kept a burnout velvet dress. I was really tired of it at one point but really looked forward to wearing it again this year.

My ancient Hue opaque tights were dug out and deployed under some equally ancient tall boots.

2026 seems likely to yield more opportunities to wear my classic fit blazers. Not sure what else to expect.
