Wow, so much eye candy! You have such great style and it suits you so well! My favorites are the tonal looks and your metallics are so great. Your DIY's are inspiring too. I have done a little bit of dyeing but am more likely to alter items when I want something a bit different. I do have a long white cotton skirt that I think I might enjoy more if it is a color...

Brooklyn, what a treat to read your review and see these wonderful outfits. Your style and creativity are an inspiration. You put a lot of thought and heart into finding and crafting the pieces you wear, and creating these gorgeous works of self-expression. The results are amazing.

Outfit 12 stopped me for a fair bit, as I had to admire that gorgeous puffer and coordinating hat. 28 and 29 also stood out to me, among the many beautiful looks. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and photos.

It’s funny, I am really very introverted, but (within reasonable boundaries, like no ballgowns or swimwear in the grocery store) it has also never really occurred to me to care whether I’m dressed conspicuously.

Thanks Column!

Thanks Bonnie. That’s interesting that you feel the same way! I have sometimes hesitated about wearing my red dyed jeans (no 11) or my bronze metallic jeans because they felt too OTT for a particular occasion or group of friends. Sometimes I make myself wear them in any case, and sometimes I don’t. It depends on how confident I am feeling on the day.

Suz, yes, I also often feel that I’m more dressed up than the norm. I even feel that when I go to the city and mix with office workers. I think the casual trend has really taken hold post Covid.

That is so interesting, Brooklyn, about the environmental norm.

I am very often the most "dressed up" person in any outing or gathering, even if I am "dressed down" by my own standards. I do have one friend whose style is not dissimilar to mine -- she wears different colours but she's always up for experimenting with new silhouettes and she combines dressier pieces with denim a lot.

There's less black worn here (on the Island) than in other urban areas of Canada, but people mainly dress in gear, for just about everything.

I've always loved your outfits and have been fascinated by the way your style has evolved. I, too, have been changing my way of dressing and buying more "not the norm" items but things I am really drawn to. For now, I have been wearing them on trips or to places we are unlikely to meet up with neighbors. That will probably change as I gain confidence. I'm not there yet but your journey has given me inspiration to try.

Mary Beth, thank you from one DIYer to another.

Angie, Suz, I totally agree that feelings about pattern are governed by mood. For a while I loved stripes, now I don’t. And that could change again. (I still have some striped tops stashed away, he he.) I also think maybe the current pattern trends don’t really suit me, so that is playing a part. I would love to see more dark floral, more ombré and abstract blurry patterns. Then I may change teams back to team pattern.

Suz, athleisure is super popular in my demographic for the sort of casual activities that I engage in. Sneakers and birks. Lots of puffers in winter. Shorts, cropped pants and knee or midi length loose sleeveless dresses are also popular in summer. Black and neutrals dominate. Very minimalist look: little to no jewellery. When I went to lunch with some friends before Xmas in outfit no 34 (all gold and white and shiny and bejeweled), my friends were all in head to toe black. No pattern, shine or obvious texture. Simple sleeveless silhouettes with no layers. Minimal jewellery. Quite the contrast to me! Of course I have no problem with how anyone else dresses, to each their own. I just hope they feel the same way!

Runcarla, that’s a great compliment, thank you.

Angie, thank you as always for the praise and encouragement. You always know the right thing to say. Now that’s skilful!

Olive Green, harmony - exactly!

Kkards, Janet, Dee, pirouette, I appreciate your kind comments. Thank you.

Thanks everyone. For wading through my post and for your generous comments. I will try to respond to everyone but it may take me a while :)

Cookie, I do see fashion as a creative outlet. A few years ago I did a tie dye project. That started me on dyeing my own clothes generally. This year I would like to take up beading. Eventually I might go for full on jewellery making. You have a great attitude to fashion and I enjoy your posts.

Jaime, I wonder if it’s an introvert thing? I feel like I worry about things I say in a social situation way too much. And sometimes that extends to worrying about what I’m wearing.

Suz, I was definitely an early adopter of the long, slouchy trend and will probably keep hanging onto it when the trend changes. But sometimes my mood can change too. I absolutely loved midi skirts for a few years then virtually overnight they suddenly felt too short for me. Now I like maxi and midaxi skirts. Those (sometimes sudden) changes in mood make it really hard to plan for longevity in my wardrobe. But (as yet) I don’t seem to tire of a classic jumper, blazer or coat, so I do try for longevity there.

What an absolutely delightful treat Brooklyn! Thank you for sharing your thoughtful analysis and absolutely stunning outfit shots. I find this so inspiring and am especially heartened by: However, I need to continue to be my own (internal!) style cheer leader. I dress very differently from the norm in my area, in my demographic and amongst my friends, which sometimes unsettles me. Our styles are different but this really resonated with me! I dress for myself, and although I have by now conditioned the people I see regularly to expect the unexpected, it does sometimes feel, as you say, unsettling.
Your use of color and texture is amazing - your outfits look like works of art. I won't pick favorites because I cannot keep track of so many, but each one has something interesting and beautiful. What more can we lucky onlookers ask for?

It seems I wasn't quite done yet.

Despite our different weather conditions and very different style, we share this penchant for newer, and possibly trendier bottoms, and footwear is also a priority for us both.

I say "possibly" trendier because I know we are both enjoying and milking the slouchier, baggier, looser or wide leg bottom trend for all it is worth, but who knows if we will as willingly return to skinnies? I do love a cigarette pant, still, and a BF jean, and a slim straight jean (at least in theory) but I have been happy with the looser silhouette, for sure. Anyway, like you, I can keep my coats, toppers, and most tops for quite a long time and still enjoy them. (Assuming they don't wear out, I mean). Whereas I tend to want my bottoms to be more current.

I wear through sandals quite quickly as a rule, despite not sharing your very long summers. I also wear through sneakers quite fast now that I live in a transitional season climate, whereas when I lived in a cold 4 season climate, it took me ages to wear through those. And with boots, it's half and half. If I wear them a lot, I wear through them. But if they are dressier (more "bootie" than "boot") they are likely to last longer.

All good info to ponder.

I'm back with cheers and applause. I also adore your style analysis here, and find it inspirational. You make explicit what so many of us find difficult to articulate, perhaps, and show very clearly how style is (or at least, how it can be) an expression of self, which is one of the reasons why it fascinates us, and why we watch it, and crave it, and try to build it or create it for ourselves. Seeing someone in an outfit that is just right for them can light up our day (or at least it lights up my day!) as nothing else can. The clothing doesn't have to be expensive, trendy, designer, or whatever -- it just has to be beautiful or interesting and intentionally put together and clearly suited to the person wearing it. Your outfits exemplify that. Every single one.

I'm going to ponder this some more and consider my own style evolution in light of what you say.

Year after year, I've been especially wowed, as Bijou said, by the way you have built your casual style for your long hot summers. Where I used to live, the challenge was winter, and I am not sure I ever conquered that (I'm not sure anyone can, to be honest, I mean outside our Indigenous populations, who mastered the art of beading in part to create beauty and significance in clothing when extreme practicality was of the essence). Where I live now, I think perhaps the challenge is transitional dressing because transitional seasons are so long. But admittedly that challenge is less difficult to meet, except when travelling, where you need all the layers with you all the time.

I'm also very interested in your comments about pattern. Many of us on the forum have noted that we are drawn to certain patterns but do tend to tire of them more quickly and that means items fall out of favour. I noticed about myself that stripes and tartans have exceptional longevity in my preferences, as do highly personal whimsical prints (my Siamese cat blouses) but florals go in and out of favour, so I have mostly but not completely confined purchases of florals to scarves, which work for transitional weather. I do still have some floral tops, though, because sometimes I just can't resist. I really love the idea of moving towards textures as a way to gain interest. But as a gamine type, I know I will always crave some pattern, so for me it is a tricky balance.

Also, I'm cheering along with Angie for the addition of white. I think you wear it very well. (I know, I know, self-tanner -- but nothing wrong with that -- it's a summer helper for me, too -- better than real tanning!) and it adds a real zing to your muted tones.

I was also interested in your comment about standing out from your environmental norm and I was curious what the people around you do wear.

Thanks again for sharing. Your wardrobe is a work of art!

*lots of happy sighs*

:)

Brooklyn, your KILLER gorgeous style knows no bounds! You have never looked better! You look beautiful, well turned out, pretty, polished, distinctive, and at ease every day. WOW!!! Especially wowed with your Summer style when it’s very hot in Australia, Hard to do. You make it look effortless.

You found your signature style years ago and built on it. Strong foundations, honest styling, and organic evolution at its best. LOVE your "style constants" list that you refer back to when you're not entirely happy with your outfit. It hits it all home!!! And you ENJOY yourself along the way!!! Ideal, inspirational, and very satisfying. You put in the work, and reap the reward. WELL DONE!!!!

“Patterns vs solids” style preferences are very moody! I know what you mean about being very into solids for a while, then into patterns, then solids again. Follow those feelings. Change is good.

Thanks for showing us your absolutely awesome outfits regularly. Always a treat!!!

I love how you put this “analyse how my style is tracking, rather than how my wardrobe is tracking”. While I love reading about and sharing others joy in tracking the numbers, for me the ultimate goal is to feel good about myself, and how my closest/wardrobe supports that.

Re your style looking thru the series of photos, it was clear that you have a distinct POW about how and what you wear and it works really well. The pictures showed a tight cohesive color palette and a small range of silhouette, and yet there was a wide range of moods and variety. I think the way you layer texture and color helps to create that. Well done. Looking forward to seeing what 2025 looks like

You’ve really developed a great sense of your own personal style, and it suits you so well! I love how you take creative control over pieces to make them work for you. I share your desire to “track” not numbers but by style evolution. The idea of counting wears and items makes me feel anything but motivated, but tracking like you’re doing here speaks to me. Thanks for all the inspiration!

Brooklyn, you are a true artist who has great vision and command of your own style. It's awe inspiring and definitely always interesting.

I love the way you've broken down your analysis on the specific details that bring your wardrobe together. Acknowledging how important texture, muted/ dusty tones, particular colour combinations, certain proportions and vintage help curate the look your after.

I always sense a certain exotic, bohenmian 70s luxe vibe to your outfits. There's certainly no need to dress like the others in your demographic, if that's not who you really are. DYOT and being authentic never looked better.

I love your style it is so unique and well put together. I have never seen you post an outfit i didn’t like. Your analysis of your style is fascinating you understand what works for you so well. I think it shows great self confidence to dress differently than others in your environment. To me that’s real style to know what you like and wear it well not bothered about what others are wearing.

Thanks Sal. It was good for me to post. It prompted me to finish 2 upcycle/alteration projects tonight that had been waiting for my attention. Procrastination is the thief of time…

Thanks Star and Jenni. It is a passion for me. There have been some projects I have spent too much time on. Some upcycle projects where I eventually felt overwhelmed and abandoned them. Off to recycling. Then felt bad about that. I try to stop myself from getting too ambitious. But thinking about my style doesn’t cost anything, and isn’t that onerous, so I do that a lot! And tunics are feeling fresh to me again (but not skinnies, ha ha).

Thanks Suz.

Thanks Lisa. I think I became a metallic convert because of YLF. I love necklaces because they allow me to add more colour and texture to an outfit. They are my favourite accessory for sure and a great third piece.

Thanks Bijou. I am honoured to have influenced you. I know you are facing similar style challenges: moving to WFH, crazy long hot summer. I think your style is very original and suits you incredibly well. Part of the reason why I do a deep analysis is to keep me on track - prevent me from being overly influenced by other people’s style choices. I am not sure whether you have difficulty with that but I do. Eg white. So many people here look so fabulous in it! But my white experiment is going to be very low key. Just wearing the few white tops I already have more often.

I love seeing so many pics. I think my personal faves are 3, 32 and 35. Maybe I do like the column of colour/ombreness/texture which those represent well.
Despite my love of stats and analysis I think you put more effort into your wardrobe than me! So interesting to hear about it.

I want to copy your goal of wanting to love every item I own. Excellent goal to have in mind.

Our styles are different but two similarities have popped up. This past year as I embrace my Grownup Tomgirl I'm favouring slouch, and finding myself enjoy longer tunics again. I had one cotton tunic in olive from years ago still in my wardrobe and I found a rust one and a black one in thrift.

Your outfits and your style are incredible. Never worry about looking unique!
