As always, COS and Uniqlo got most of my wardrobe dollars.

However, In 2024 I also bought a pair of NWT Everlane barrel jeans from Poshmark, as well as Everlane’s Way High Curve jean in dark blue denim. The past 5 years, Everlane has become my regular stop for jeans when I haven’t found what I wanted from COS.

Everlane also got a nice chunk of my shoe budget this year when I bought 2 pairs of their Day Glove flats (though I do plan to resell one pair because I reach for the other pair every single time), and their Glove booties in both chocolate brown and black. Both pairs of the booties are definitely keepers.

At Aritzia, which used to be one of my go-to brands, though not in recent years, they came up trumps with a much needed pair of navy trousers. The Effortless pants replaced a much loved pair of old navy trousers, also from Aritzia.

Finally, at NAS, I bought the blue and gray mesh shirt from AllSaints that several Fabbers have, and a great navy bra from a new-to-me brand, Skarlett Blue.

I have purchased a wide variety of labels in 2024. Companies I have bought more than one piece from are

-Frankie4 - two pairs of shoes
- Gregory - two dresses, one pants
-Tuesday label - two pants and one blazer
- Lululemon - shorts, tank and leggings
- Merchant - one shoes, one bag.

I have been happy with the quality and fit of all these pieces.

I used to buy from Country Road and Witchery - but only one tank this year. It’s not quality, more their colour palette which has not been as attractive to me.

Early this year I was leaning heavily into Sézane and really enjoying their bags, knitwear and shoes. I also shop Massimo Dutti, Cos and the occasional trendy item from Mango. All easy from Spain. This autumn in US shopping I have liked a lot of J Crew items (brushed cashmere and faux leather). I have also been quite satisfied with Frame, for jeans, belts and tops. A happy outlier this summer came with some ruffly Doen blouses.

It's always nice to do an inventory of what brands work and what don't, because rarely do they stay consistent with fit, quality, and price point.

This year's winners have been: Paige (love the fit of their jeans), Gap (t-shirts have always washed and worn well and I really liked the cropped linen shirts over the summer months), Zella (my go to for athletic loungewear for WFH), Rails (I really like their plaid shirts and they have had many delightful sweaters this season), Vince (I like the Rails sweaters a lot but no one makes a better cashmere/wool sweater than Vince IMO), Ecco (wear well and usually have nice room in the toe area, also heel heights that are often under 3 inches).

This year's misses have been: Joe's (I used to love their jeans but the fit is just always off to me lately), Banana Republic (haven't been a fan of their fit and color palettes for a few seasons now), Express (haven't been in one of their stores in years, just don't like the material anymore or the fit of their jeans), Cole Haan (used to be a go to brand for me but lately I prefer the fit and lower heel heights of Ecco).

Oh Janet thank you! It's. Good to know that it is well made and suit a hourglass shape. Your dress sounds lovely, but unfortunately I am not the right size, maybe because I am not running 20 miles a week!
Irina, apologies for the OT!

Minaminu — I have a classic DVF wrap dress in a bag somewhere that I need to consign/sell/give away. It’s beautiful but at least a size too small (bought when I was in my running 20+ miles a week phase) and doesn’t really fit my life these days. It’s knee length (actually a little short on me) and a turquoise and white geometric print. Well made and flattering on an hourglass shape. If you’re interested, it’s a US size 8 (fits perhaps more like a 6, as they tend to run a little small).

I have never tried one myself.

LJP, I doubt I would ever be one who can make reselling clothing a viable business. But it helps to get my wardrobe more curated without guilt of putting too much into donations. I don’t do it anymore, since I’m sure none of my good clothes will reach people in need, it will get picked up by resellers and sold for profit. You might look into it when you retire and will have more free time.

Aquamarine, I also like Vince bottoms, don’t see them often on sale here, though.

Interesting observations. I like reading about brands that I don’t know much about. I’ll have to take a look at Cos, for example.

I spent the first 6 months shopping for a MOG dress, all online. I couldn’t deal with anything else! But I also had a heath issue in the last year that severely impacted my weight and pretty much had to start over, wardrobe-wise, soup to nuts, once the wedding was over. I found that Mother denim fits me really well, and I stalked sales to replenish my denim wardrobe. I discovered I liked some Vuori pants, not the joggers (although I have those too). I’ve always liked Vince bottoms, but had mine tailored rather than replenished (much cheaper!). I tossed a lot of sweaters, and got some Quince cashmere (just OK), some Lands End cashmere (really nice, no pilling!), and Bloomingdale’s cashmere (thin, but so far so good). I like Uniglo for Heattech the last few years, too. For boots, Aquatalia is my go-to and I did duplicate some when I could. For more casual wear, Paul Green got my dollars this year…3 new pairs.

I concur with Angie, Irina and LJP on Club Monaco. I'll still have two CM items in my wardrobe, but I haven't purchased anything from CM since 2017. Their minimalist palette amd designs are uninspiring and their prices have increased signifcantly.

Agree with the CM assessment . 10 years ago my entire wardrobe was Club Monaco . Coats , accessories , regular work clothes etc. I don’t even go in the store now when I’m in the mall !

Every time the discussion turns to resale , I have a pang of regret that I’m not one of those people who make a hobby or even a living from it . Because as you say , Irina , it’s how you build the wardrobe you want at a price that works for you . Oh well

Great analysis, Irina! Glad to see that I am not the only one who always checks the composition!

This year, I successfully bought quite a few pieces second hand as I kept on a strict list of brands that work well for me. I also used second hand purchase to test some new brands, sometimes it went well and others it was quickly resold.

This year, my winning newbies are

- Everlane (second hand), but only a pair of trousers have been kept, the rest has been resold as sizing and cut are really odd
- Ralph Lauren dresses (second hand) as they fit my body shape.
- Balzac Paris which in my opinion offers better quality and cut than Sezane and though I only bought a piece, it's a workhorse and I received so many compliments! I'd love to try some more pieces!

I am now eyeing a preloved DVF long wrap dress, has anyone any experience on this type of dress?

cat2, I wear some Ganni. Their bottoms can work on a curvier bottom if the waistband is higher and defined. Roomier on the thighs.

Like Janet, I shop a range of price points. This is especially true for shoes. I can do VERY well with Paul Green and Aquatalia - AND - Sam Edelman. Majorly different prices. It's all about who's making the most comfy pretty and refined shoe.

My faves for 2024 are the usual suspects - and some newbies!

My big disappointment is Club Monaco. 10 years ago, I used to buy lots from them. I loved their stuff. Their palettes have become very muted. Same with Banana Republic. I'm no longer their target market.

And bags :)
Bonnie, those dresses are great!
Suz, I’m 160 cm or 5’2 (?), probably shorter than you. There are many cropped styles that are trendy and available at Cos (and at Massimo Dutti). I take full advantage of it. But as a petite person, I’m used to the challenge of too longs items. I also have short torso that doesn’t help either.
Nuancedream & Janet, must admit I don’t know some of the brands you mentioned.

Cat2. I’m small on the bottom so for me their jeans were true to size.

Good analysis!

I like COS in theory but find their items not so easy to fit and work into my style, with some exceptions. Their long sleeve tee is great — I have it in cobalt and would duplicate if they make another color that works so well for me.

My brands are all over the place lately. I truly do leave no retail stone unturned, LOL. Many price points. Rails was good to me this year — a jacket and a new plaid shirt that both went into heavy fall/winter rotation. I’ve had some success with Allsaints recently too, and Rag & Bone has been very good to me — possibly my biggest winner of the year, with a couple of new favorite tees, a sweater, a new pair of Miramar pants (I wore my old ones to death), and a pair of boots. COH has been good for denim, but I also found a trendy, $22 budget winner at American Eagle. Adidas for sneakers. Athleta for gear and also casual pants. Anthro was not quite as successful for me this year as in years past, but I got a couple of pieces from them. A couple of new jackets courtesy of Drew and Marella. Not many new shoes this year, but they ranged from $25 Converse to some beautiful Louboutins my husband bought me. I also have a couple of things from Paige, for the first time in some years (velvet pants, a burgundy sweater).

A new-to-me brand that I’ll likely invest in more: Vuori. I got a lightweight sweatshirt that is heavenly soft and washes so well. I may get the same shirt in another color if I see a color that moves me.

While 2024 has been a low buy year for me, I have added some items from Essentiel Antwerp, Maeve, Quince, and J Crew. Not surprisingly, most items were purchased second-hand. Another brand that has been a pleasant surprise is Skarlett Blue for bras. Pretty and comfortable bras...yes,please!

Thanks, Irina -- good to know. I may begin investigating Poshmark more seriously. I have -- up to now -- stuck to looking.

I don't think I have the patience for re-selling items but I would buy from them happily.

And on one of my longer city trips I'm going to do some serious trying on at COS. I have always found that is my best bet -- get a feel for the brand, figure out if it fits, and then try the online process.

It's interesting what Pirouette says -- I am taller than she is, but up to now that has been my experience, too, with COS -- but not yours and you are around the same height as me, I think? So there is some magic that you are doing to make the things work!

Love that green top! I do like Cos and have a few workhorses from them and agree with you about Everlane and Banana Republic. I seem to have had a bit of a style change this year and have been purchasing from Gudrun Sjödén. I've found a new fondness for dresses and like that they are comfortable and quirky.

RobinF, I successfully resell on Poshmark. Maybe it’s because I buy and sell such a limited number of brands. Cos is a popular brand. I might loose $10-15 on a resale sometimes but I consider it part of the business. I bought items in new or in an excellent condition for a fraction of the retail price, too.

LJP, well, I do have time and patience for research. I mostly sell but also buy on Poshmark. It helps me to experiment but also to build a wardrobe I want. As my purchasing power will decrease soon, I have to find ways to keep refreshing my wardrobe on a budget. I’m not interested in quitting shopping completely.

About GANNI. This is a European brand and more popular there with younger crowd who are not entirely into athletic wear. When it goes on sale, it sell out quickly here, too. I have a bag and a trench from them. I tried dresses but they are not my style. I also tried jeans but without success. If I come across something on sale, I definitely consider this brand, it might serve as an infusion of something less serious to my somber wardrobe :)
cat2, out of the brands you mentioned, I tried mostly Vince and Elie Tahari. I like Vince a lot and have shoes and clothing from it. Interestingly, I don’t find anything from Elie Tahari that would work for me.

Irina
I always admire your style so it’s interesting to hear your favourite brands. I overlap with you I like All Saints and Zadig & Voltaire they are my favourites. We have a Cos shop and a Massimo Dutti shop near me but I find although I like their style their clothes don’t fit meas I am only 5’1’. They seem to be made for taller people. I buy shoes in Massimo Dutti which are always a good fit for me. My friend bought the same green top as you but she bought the matching trousers as well. It is a beautiful outfit on her as she has red hair. I hope you find a way to style the top as it’s a beautiful piece.

Hmm, I am trying some brands I don’t usually shop, with one piece each from Reiss and Faherty. I am also shopping Amour Vert and Saint and Sofia more. My go tos are still Elie Tahari, Trina Turk and Vince. And Code Bleu (a Dillards house brand) and NYDJ for jeans. My Boden, Talbots and Ralph Lauren shopping has tailed off a bit. They were go tos for reasonably priced work wear, but I am buying a more casual mix.

My "best " pieces this past year , well fall really - came from Aritzia and H&M Premium. I too like what I see from COS but have no way of knowing size or fit or anything . No stores here and ordering from the US is price/duty prohibitive. I love MD too but fit is hit and miss and I don't order a lot from them. One pair of pants this fall - which are just ok (fit isn't perfect ) . No stores here . I do not have the attention span or time to spend on resale sites and don't find that type of shopping rewarding in any way . However......I just ordered a cashmere sleeveless sweater (BR) from Poshmark the other day but only because someone did the work and found it for me. Then I remembered (what is wrong with me???) that the postal strike means that it may be ages before I receive it .

re: Ganni. I have a pair of knock-off red patent Ganni slingbacks and LOVE them. Get comments and compliments every time I wear them! The originals are $500 ish so not happening in my world but I'm happy with the ones I did buy. I find their clothes a little young for me - there is only one boutique in Wpg that carries the line - and also too $$. Makes me wonder who their target client is.

I love that green kimono piece - it is really beautiful - and hope you can find a way to wear it!

I love your style so it is interesting to see what your favorite brands are. I was wondering the same as Suz, as far as how you go about shopping second hand. I also use Poshmark and have pretty good success but not 100% so I tend to stick to less expensive items. I do love that I can get exact measurements from the sellers but was surprised that that doesn't always translate to a perfect fit.

I haven't resold items that don't work for me but maybe should start doing that.

Suz, I bought my second hand items on Poshmark. I rely on the measurements provided by sellers and on a general idea how a brand fits. But it is hit and miss. I had to resell a couple of Cos items that I didn’t like on me. Fortunately, it is not too difficult.

I order Massimo Dutti online, I return to the only store we have here. I could mail it but it’s faster. The store has a limited inventory and ordering online works for me. I have never ordered anything online from Cos because of duty charges are insane.

Our big Anthropology store on Queen West is closing down. I don’t buy from them but it is sad to see them go. I don’t know if we have any left.

Interesting observations and comments from others, too! I love COS designs and also Massimo Dutti, but never buy at COS and almost never at Massimo Dutti -- COS because a lot is black or in colours that don't work for me, and it is hard for me to get a fit (mainly because I can't try on in person and can't order -- it requires a city visit for me to figure it out.) Massimo again because the colours often aren't right for me -- though I have had more luck there in the past and do keep my eyes open. I like their clothes.

Did you get your second hand items online, Irina? I am curious about the process. I am imagining that you know your size pretty well in these brands. Once I know my size and the fit, I can do the ordering -- but until and unless I've had a good long in person try on session in a store, I don't feel confident about it. It's doable with Massimo Dutti, though, because I can order and return, whereas that is not an option for me with COS.

I love your kimono top and hope you will find a way to wear it!

This year has been a weird shopping year for me. Weird, because most of my purchases came from two stores I had not ordered from in years! And ironically, they are two that do not work for you. Everlane I bought 2 shirts, curve jeans, and a sweater there. I also bought pants and 3 essential type sweaters from BR! (Much to my surprise, I will add. I haven't liked their stuff for the past few years -- but got lucky with these items which are all wool and/ or cotton/silk and very nice quality. )

I also bought several items at Anthropologie. While the pieces from Everlane and BR and more essentials (if you can call a red sweater an essential, ha!) the ones from Anthro are "fun" statement type articles. Silver belt, print velvet shirt, flocked pants, pleather pants.

I also got the odd piece elsewhere -- Bloomingdales for cashmere, Allison Wonderland, a local Canadian designer for a skirt, Rails top on sale, an All Saints top. And jeans and a skirt from Zara.

Even higher end brands produce an odd polyester or acetate thing. BR does have nice fabrics but I find their styles are not for me, something is often off.

Roberta, interesting about Talbots and Boden. I was in Talbots a few times when we had a store here and bought a very nice blazer there years ago. But it always looked to me like an older cousin of JCrew. I might be wrong. I also buy things that are casual but mostly from the same brands.

Dee, yes to Muji!

My favorite brands this year have been:
Simon's Contemporaine - knit wear, denim skirt
Uniqlo- knit wear, hoodie, socks. Also bought 2 Uniqlo skirts second hand.
Levi's- jeans
Mango- barrel jeans
The Gap - corduroy jeans
Muji - top, socks
LL Bean - tops
With the exception of Mango, these are all brands that I've bought in the past, they suit my casual style, and I'm relatively happy with their quality.

Your post really made me think. For decades, my go-to's were Talbots and Boden. The two brands seemed perfect complements; Talbots could get a little boring, and Boden could get a little zany. Both brands are still very well made. But since I retired, all of that has changed.

I now buy mostly casual clothing, which led me to LL Bean and Loft. I love Cos designs, but they're a little out of my price range, so I only buy one or two things there each year. I also really love Desigual, but only buy one or two things there each year. Both of those brands don't have stores anywhere near me, so I must shop online if I want to wear them. My neighborhood thrift stores do not run to that kind of quality.

Very interesting Irina! I see tons of donated items and agree that COS, Massimo and Uniqlo are among the best value for money. Ganni, which I like in principle, actually does a lot of polyester, which I find surprising. I think of them as print heavy too. BR has some quality fabrics. Zadig and Voltaire seems a bit overpriced to me and I am not sure it deserves to be in a higher tier than the others above. I love to see designer pieces and assess their quality but obviously that happens less frequently. But does happen! I won't make a novel of this though .
*all of the above are observations from the pool of donated clothing, not from retail experience
