Super late to this …and I see the decisions have even made on the sweater and puffer.
But I’m here about the goals and aims for this year. Congratulations to you and DH on starting to transition to what’s next. That’s huge, And good for you on thinking thru what it means and how to achieve it. Like you I’m working thru what “real life” means in terms of how and what I wear. I’m trying hard to slow my roll on adding and subtracting and working on mixing and matching, and trying to pair unexpected items together.

I’ve always loved and craved simplicity. But have not always been able to get the details right. And you have to get the details right with these simpler looks. Color, texture, accessories—these are areas where you have always excelled, so even your simpler outfits never look basic.

I am glad you decided to get the green puffer. Its silvery sheen works so nicely with your hair, and the black details ground it and add a sophisticated touch. Lovely.

Update: I pulled the trigger on the Canada Goose coat, even after I saw Jordan Klepper and Roy Wood Jr the other night, and they took flak from an audience member about their Comedy Central-issued Canada Goose jackets. I know they don’t have the most pristine reputation but I do love this style. I’ll atone by getting down-alternative comforter (we have put off buying a new one after our old one died a couple of winters ago).

I’m holding off on the Tibi sweater. To Jaime’s point, I have been burned by expensive knitwear in the past. I may try a more basic but less expensive alternative to get my charcoal/grey fix.

So I checked my sweater and it is 80% wool and 20% polyester. And it is the pilliest thing I have ever owned. But I will shave it because I like it. But I would be extremely annoyed had I paid a high amount. YMMV !

Joy, good point —I would be more inclined towards lighter greys in warmer temps too (and of course lighter tones are brilliant with your hair!). I do have a single light grey V-neck sweater that’s very classic but fits the bill sometimes. But dark grey for cooler months is a great color for me, and I currently have none!

Jonesy, those are great thoughts. Thank you!

The sweater is a blend —60% wool, 40% polyamide. The feel is nice. Not sure what that blend means for longevity, but I am sensitive to overpaying for knits! So point very well taken.

As for the jacket. Here’s the thing. Long coats/jackets are not an easy fit on me. Many are too narrow in the hip. Plus I want a very light, thin long puffer and most are too…puffy! It’s been a bit of a HEWI. I know most items on TRR are returnable but it’s definitely a bit more of a crap shoot!

I love your description of your style evolution--it sounds so carefully considered and thoughtful! I too have been craving more simplicity.

Re. these two investment pieces, here is my two cents (please feel free to take it or leave it, lol): I love the look of the Tibi sweater. Per Jaime's comment, what is the fabric content? Is it 100% merino wool? My sense is that Tibi fabric can be hit or miss in terms of its durability, so that would be my only caution (and like footwear, it can be hard to know in advance which fabric will hold up well and which won't, but I think 100% wool is a good bet).

With the CG coat, I'm a little bit of a spanner, as Angie says: I do like the sage color a lot, but I'm not as keen on the black zippers--something about the high contrast is throwing me (although I hear you on loving the zipper detail, because it improves functionality and makes the coat stand out). Another thing I can't help but wonder about is just how much long-term use you'll get from it (given you are thinking of this as an investment piece), since winters are getting warmer every year. But I realize I'm probably an outlier on this, since I live in a cold climate and don't own a long puffer, and this winter I've only pulled out my hip-length puffer a few times, since it's been so mild!

If you really love the idea of a long, relatively lightweight puffer in an interesting color, have you checked out TheRealReal :)? For example, I did a cursory search and found this Rag & Bone, gray-blue, size medium, long lightweight puffer (new with tags), for $428 (see pic). CG shows up regularly on TRR, along with fab puffer brands like Montcler and Herno. But that approach does require searching and lots of patience, and you may want to get a coat now for this year.

Thanks for sharing your goals. I especially relate to the first one - as I mentioned in my color/word post, it's the year to seriously take stock of everything in preparation for change in employment and finances. I've started by taking a hard look at luxury expenses, inspired by the recent thread about cost of hair care! I need to review my clothing expenditures next, and honestly assess my purchasing behavior and habits.

That is really an outstanding coat on you.

Love the puffer color. The only concern is keeping it tidy; I have one light colored puffer I wear in the Spring and it picks up random dirt marks and attracts every errant drop of coffee.

Your intentions sound excellent. The coat look amazing! One word of warning - if the sweater you are considering is Tibi. I own one Tibi sweater, bought second hand new on Poshmark, and it pills like nothing I have ever owned. I love the color (cobalt blue) and the cut and it might be a completely different composition than the one you are eyeing.

Love the Canada Goose coat - the fit, the color and the black zippers! The addition of black is perfect for combining with neutral pieces - like charcoal, grey, black or dark denim. Very excited for your new plans .

OMG Janet! That puffer is DIVINE!! I think the color is fantastic and would totally function as a neutral! (Says the woman whose own full-length puffer is teal blue...)

These sound like excellent guidelines going into the year, Janet. You are relaxing into your style and that is great!

Go for the sweater if it will give you more joy than any alternative you've canvassed. It is an essential that won't date.

I love the green coat on you. It is quite casual (so hopefully that is okay) but also distinctive because of the zips. The green is a gorgeous colour. Maybe you can go through your wardrobe in Finds and look at the various bottoms you'd likely wear with it to see if there are enough to make you comfortable with the purchase. I suspect most of your pants would work with it well. Though it might feel off with burgundy or red.
