Thank you for your input, Jenni, Nikki and Bijou!

Jenni, yes, I have joined YLF over 15 years ago, in early years. My time on the forum is longer than the system shows, as a group of us early on realized how wonderful the community was and changed our screen names from random names to those that are close reflections of regular names. I was lucky enough to meet Angie and bunch of Fabbers in person and attended several YLF meetings in several cities. I always read and keep track what is going on bur I do go through longer periods where I don't post much or at all due to various life circumstances. However, I always feel like coming back.

The 1-in-3-out is going to be interesting. I have plenty of rarely-worn items to choose from for editing, and the hard part is going to be emotional component on deciding. I have sometimes revived 15 years old items that have not been worn for something like 10 years.

I like your I-in-3-out strategy. As I am categorizing my wardrobe, I was finding I could go further than 1-in-1-out and made that my minimum with any extras as bonus outs

Really interesting Tanya. I had a bit of a look at your old posts. What a loyal YLF member! You must have joined in the first few years.
I’m always interested in others who have been reducing their wardrobe sizes as I have been and think 1 in 3 out will be very tricky! In 2020 I managed 12 in and 24 out but am sure that was mostly because of the pandemic lockdowns when shopping opportunities were much reduced for me as a primarily B&M shopper.
Your themes sound impressive and too much work for me to consider! I enjoy reading about them though.

I will report on the current big edit, when done, of course, as well as the new stuff. Right now I am taking a beak from shopping until at least March.

"My stylistic preferences remain generally unchanged. My fashion persona is still "Sleek Urban Princess" as it was many years ago, with the same two shadow personas of Edgy Rocker and Romantic Bombshell"

Suits you to a tee, all these years later, sweet Tanya! I clearly remember the fun we had coming up with these monikers and shadow styles together :)

I assumed you wore faux leather to work! No biggie. Don't give it a second thought. Please carry on!

As always, you are super organized, a brilliant planner and shopper, and know how to have fun with fashion and style! Your KILLER style and wardrobe reflect it! It's a pleasure and an inspiration to be on your style journey with you.

I'm loving the focussed goals! Strict, manageable, and complementary. I know you will achieve them ......and then some...

I appreciate your comments, Cardiff girl, SarahD8, Suntiger, Brooklyn and Jaime!

Yes, I am indeed a scientist, very analytical, and occasionally not the clearest in non-scientific communications as witnessed here . What I meant about monikers and themes was:
1) When I pick a theme for the season, I think about how someone with my style persona(s) would interpret it. So, take my current "Dark Romance' theme, first I defined what that would generally mean to most people (juxtaposition of edgy and romantic, lots of black, dark florals, etc.). Then I would decide which elements, according to my style persona(s) I want to keep/emphasize, which to get rid of, which to change/modify. Basically, a filtered version of "Dark Romance" for my own preferences.
2) For the upcoming Spring and Summer, I am still working on finalizing the themes. Based on fall and winter experiences, I realized that I prefer themes that naturally incorporate juxtaposition (like Dark Romance), to "homogenous" themes (like Dark Academia). When considering various themes, I couldn't come up with anything that naturally includes juxtaposition, so I decided to make my own. So for each season, I picked two relatively contrasting themes to juxtapose myself (e.g. for spring, theme A meets theme B). This will still be filtered through my moniker lens later.

And yes, I tend to overthink/overcomplicate lots of things in life, so I try to direct that energy to less harmful areas, like wardrobe, to have some breathing space elsewhere .

I love the idea of combining a moniker with a theme. “A meets B” etc. I am going to enjoy thinking about this for myself! You work in science don’t you? I just adore your analytical approach! Can’t wait to see what you come up with.

This sounds very well thought out and I'm excited to hear more! I like the way you are combining a consistent moniker with seasonal themes. I think that would work really well for me too (that is, I sort of do that to some degree but I think it would be useful if I were more organized about it) so I will be reading along and taking notes!

Thank you for your input, UmmLila, Cat2, Suz and Slim Cat.

Regarding the bag, I appreciate the bag recommendations and will look into those. What I am looking for is a navy leather tote, big enough to fit my work laptop, with silver hardware, that zips/closes completely at top (not just a snap/magnetic closure), and that I like stylistically. A tall order.

UmmLila, yes, a navy bag would be super useful in transitional weather, when the light makes black look too harsh. I have a white one for summer and grey/taupe on for more transitional weather, but for many outfits navy would work better.

Cat2, glad to hear you achieved similar goals last year, I hope I will be able le to as well!

Suz, I read your similar post a few days bag and was struck with many similarities in our goals ( editing, themes, etc.), and now I learn that there is one more, the blue bag. I was going to reply to your thread and then things got out of my control and by the time I remembered some time has passed and I felt bad to revive it, so I am sorry. I will be posting separately on theme approach soon. Regarding shoes, I am trying to hold out for update/trendy shapes I don't already have. Repeats are only allowed if I need a certain color for one of my themes and the only type of shoe I can find is something I already have.

Slim Cat, you are very kind, thank you!

Tanya, the search for blue bags is REAL!! Still a HEWI for me, too. I don't necessarily need a tote, but I want a bag with some structure and silver hardware...still looking....

I love the way you are interpreting your style direction -- your persona does X. And X does Y. That is brilliant! That's what I want to do for summer, too. My revised moniker is "laid-back luminous garçon" (revised from urban prince) but for summer I always want more skirts/ dresses and also a slightly different mood, so I will be thinking on what to call that.

I will be looking with interest at your white top discoveries. I also find that white tops with some interest are vital for summer wear. And much harder to find than one might expect. For casual wear I often resort to a graphic tee with white background but that does not work on all occasions.

You KNOW I'll be curious about your shoe purchases, too!!

Sounds like really focused goals. Last year I did the same thing with my budget, and came really close to hitting it. It was actually fun to have a focus on my key needs and meeting them with pieces I genuinely liked. On the work tote, Brahmin usually has navy, and if you don’t like their reptile prints, they have smooth leather lines as well. I confess to having quite a few of their work totes, they are surprisingly lightweight for good leather and have great internal organization so you don’t end up fishing around for everything. And they stand up to road warrior level travel.

So well thought ought and consistent. I need the three out, one in principle as well but I doubt I am disciplined enough. Reduction in shopping, or at least increase in just window shopping is a goal of mine for the year.

I have often thought it would be nice to have a dark blue work bag. The black ones end up looking so harsh for spring and summer. It occurs to me that M. Gemi and Mansur Gavriel are brands that often have an extensive color range and that you might check them out.

Thank you for commenting, Runcarla and Roberta!

Regarding those white tops, I will probably not know until at least April, when Spring items start to be prominent in the stores and one sees what has to translated into stores/street from the runway. Right now, the options I am considering are a sleeved crochet top, a tee with subtle corset seaming (something inspired by the Dion Lee tee below but more subtle and more wearable) and halter/tie necklines, especially if added on the top of regular neckline so they are easier to wear. But I will likely change my mind many times until I settle on something.

I would also like to see these white summer tops! That is something I am always looking for, since I like white in the summer particularly, but don't like a lot of what I think are fussy details: Ruffles and elastic and so forth.

I am also impressed by how your fashion personalities play off and feed into each other. I will be watching closely to see the outfits that come out of this careful thought process.

I am super late with this post but better late than never. At least it is still January.

My 2022 was relatively uneventful style-wise. The biggest change was that we went back to work in person in May, we are on a super flexible hybrid schedule. I tend to go to the office 2-3 times a week. This year the schedule may get more formalized.

Work dressing remains fairly formal (no jeans, no sneakers, business casual or dressier), but I have been taking more risks, as there are not a lot of people around. For example, I dared to wear my faux leather pants to work recently. I am trying to amp up my WFH dressing to a more dressed-up loungewear look. I will probably post separately on it in the near future. Those two types of occasions do not include jeans. There are two more situations I generally have in my life, which are jeans based: out and about, running errands which tends to be casual; and meeting with friends for dinner/drinks etc. for which I like smart casual dressing. Thus, four types of outfits.

My stylistic preferences remain generally unchanged. My fashion persona is still "Sleek Urban Princess" as it was many years ago, with the same two shadow personas of Edgy Rocker and Romantic Bombshell. My style adjectives are currently in flux, the two that remain are sleek and structured and the rest I am thinking on. I have chosen "calm" and "light blue" as my word/color of 2023 as it is likely going to be a pretty stressful year.

For the past 4-5 years, I have been choosing a color palette per season, 2-3 neutrals + 2-4 colors. This has been working well and I continue to do so. Inspired by Brooklyn, I recently started choosing a theme per season to go with the colors. I have been sort of doing it for longer, but last year I decided to commit. For the Fall 2022 I did an "Academia Chic' theme: mostly Dark Academia with a little Light Academia and Blue Academia thrown in. This winter 2023 I am doing a "Dark Romance " theme and will post on this separately soon as well. The way I think of these themes is that my persona plays with a theme for a season, e.g. "Sleek Urban Princess" does "Dark Romance". This may be very different from somebody with a more bohemian persona doing the same theme. I don't think of it as my actual fashion persona changing. I am currently planning my Spring and Summer 2023 themes and they are going to be about juxtapositions of two styles each (Spring= A meets B, Summer= C meets D).

While I have always had a large wardrobe, it had gotten too large for many reasons including weight/size fluctuations and my main goal for 2023 is controlled reduction. To that extent, my sub-goals are:
1) Much-less-than-usual shopping - I reduced my shopping budget quite dramatically which will reduce the number of items I purchase
2) When I do buy something, I will practice 1-in-3-out (!)
3) Regular monthly smaller edits and bigger ones every three months (in the middle of one right now)
4) For my themes, focus on shopping my closet and add only 2-3 very well chosen items per theme.

The loose shopping list for Spring/Summer 2023 looks like below. It is more of a frame of what I am allowed to buy vs. what I am looking for. In reality, based on constraints above, I will probably end up fulfilling it only partially.
1) 1-2 pairs of trendy shoes; since I am a shoe girl.
2) A pair of wide full length white jeans and maybe a pair of light wash jeans, wide of flare; since I am also a denim girl .
3) 1-2 trendy inexpensive white tops; I have found these to be the key for warm weather for me.
4) The right work navy tote; this is an essential and has been a HEWI for a while. It is also the only item I am allowed to break the budget limit for.
5) A watch with a white leather strap - this is a replacement for a current essential that broke.
6) No more than 2-3 carefully chosen items per each of the A-D themes above.

Thank you very much for reading all of this!
