SF, Thanks for the reminder to move and exercise. I agree. As women age weight bearing exercises and lifting heavy weights is important for so many reasons. I would add balance exercises to the list. Exercise also helps us maintain good posture which helps our clothes look better! :-)

I love the addition of citron into your wardrobe and I am looking forward to your post regarding shoes, because I am no longer feeling the desire to wear heels much and move to foot friendly shoes. Winter boots are always easier for me than summer footwear.

That citrus is *the* color lately, isn’t it? It looks great on you! Love the barrel-leg pants too.

I’ve never heard of the diet you mention, but have been vegetarian since reading Diet for a Small Planet in the mid 80s. I eat dairy, eggs, and (some) fish.. Our family seems to get lactose intolerant as we age, but even lactose-free milk bugs me these days. Most of my life I’ve drunk 2 gal of milk per week/a liter a day, but have dropped down in the last few years to less than 1 liter per week. I don’t have celiac like one of my sisters, but gluten can be tricky for me; I’ve been avoiding it too. Many people struggle to limit their carb intake; fat is my temptation. I try to keep close to 30% of calories from fat, but it’s very easy for that number to soar to the 40s, even over 50%.

I think movement throughout the day, as you mention, is important. That can be added in even to a home-based day, with all kinds of fidgeting with hands & feet or regular movement breaks. But don’t forget to lift heavy things more days than not. It is especially important as we age. I’m working on my legs, because I don’t like the way skinny looks, but was shocked when I realized how weak mine have become.

So wear them anywhere. Your feet will be happy.

Love the citron It's great with turquoise especially. I wear my gold Birkies out and about (not for work excepting festivals) and think they're ok.
I've been vegetarian all my adult life, and eat as much local produce as available. My summer eating habits are Much better than winter! If I was retired I'd try to be active 5-6 hours a day, but I'm lucky to get in 2 with my stupid schedule :/

Nora, thanks so much for the information. My late MIL gave me a Forks over Knives cookbook as a gift shortly before she died and every recipe I have tried is wonderful. I had no idea there was a newsletter!

Jaime, yes! with your hair silvering hair, silver and maybe pewter metallic would look fabulous! Have a nice visit with your sister!

Lana, these ocean blue-greens are life long favorites for me. You have a great eye for mixing color and picking items that flatter and fit your style. I have enjoyed reading your posts!

Sal, I think Kelly Green would look amazing on you and I think you should indulge this craving! Random thought: When I was 10, I had a swim instructor named Kelly Green! :-)

Nikki, thanks for the support! It’s nice to hear how you turned the closing of the local butcher shop during Covid restrictions into something unexpectedly positive.

Angie, thanks! I may indeed need your help with shoes because I am struggling!

I’m glad people like the silver Birkies. I tend to wear these around the house more than when I’m out and about because I think of them as too casual. Maybe I can venture out while wearing them?

I usually lurk, but you asked if anyone has pursued a WFPB diet, so I will delurk. A friend has lost about 80 pounds on this diet, and normalized/reversed fatty liver disease as a consequence. I also switched to mostly WFPB a bit over a year ago. My friend doesn't eat tofu (it's not really WFPB compliant, and has a significant amount of fat), but i do. I don't buy/eat other processed meat substitutes. I also use small amounts of oil, and eat more avocados/nuts/nut butters than she does. But I started out at normal weight, and just felt that WFPB was a better option health-wise than the low carb diet I'd been on for about 5 years. I do feel better eating this way, and don't miss meat. My weight hasn't changed, but it would drop if I cut the fat content further. Chef AJ is an ambassador for low fat eating for weight loss (she's a McDougall follower). Anyway, feel free to PM me if you want to chat. There are many, many sources for WFPB recipes -- thank goodness for the web, and the Forks Over Knives quarterly magazine.

Citron and silver are both beautiful on you. I am leaning more into silver lately too - so fun when you have hair to match!
I have no diet advice - I am into fasting myself, being an all or nothing sort of person apparently .
I applaud your turning your TheRealReal proceeds into your clothing budget. I did the same! Last summer I brought a suitcase full of items to NY with me and have just spent the last of my profits (also at TheRealReal) this month. My sister is bringing it to me in a couple of weeks. Am I excited - yes!

JAileen, I love the statement,, "yarn doesn't count until its knit into a garment!" However, I am doing my best to avoid the oversized yarn stash that many knitters seem to collect. I set a limit of no more than two projects in cue so one or both need to be completed before I buy more yarn.

Jennifer NZ, laughed at "I joked years ago that one reason I was heavier was that I didn't Stayfit!" Your observation is accurate. I remain at normal weight and BMI. However, I do not want to continue gaining since it will quickly push me into a less healthy range. While, I have continued to exercise, I engage in less additional physical activity when working from home. For example less walking around my house between appointments than the walking between appointments when working in a school building. Having a friend or family member help with an edit or shopping can be very tricky. As far DD's tendency to be opinionated...you may recall that during the December edit, she told me I suffer from single item functional fashion fixedness (or something similar) and it was not a complement! LOL! Helpful but with a big dose of reality and thankfully delivered with humor

Merwoman, and Robin F., I'm glad you and others have given me positive feedback about the citron. It makes me feel energized and happy!

Rachy, I like "specificity yields results". I'm not sure how dogmatic I can be in following a diet so I will aim for good enough and not perfect. I am not fond of tofu or products like impossible burger or fake vegan cheese, etc. We belong to a community supported agriculture organic farm co-op and get a box of locally grown veggies weekly. I am usually happy with beans, grains, nuts, seeds, and almost all veggies. I hope I can figure out how to create a healthful enough diet from these. I have a few good cookbooks and have been collecting some recipes that look tasty. I guess I will find out!

My older son calls me an accidental vegetarian My local butcher location closed during the pandemic and delivery from their other location was not successful. I order other groceries from Target and after many trials and error(s), I have settled into a vegetarian diet. I would say overall I feel much healthier but I had to research quite extensively to find a good balance for me. A lot of tweaks

How great to read this! So nice that DD was a big help. I suspect only one of my two DDs would have the right personality to help me, the other one is a bit too opinionated possibly! I hope you find the slightly smaller wardrobe freeing but am so happy that you got good money for the cast-offs, as I think you have been buying excellent quality all through. Really nice to split it with her as well.
As far as the weight, I joked years ago that one reason I was heavier was that I didn’t Stayfit! And I’m sure you still do. Menopause was definitely when my weight gain happened and I was about 10 years at that weight from ages 47-58 before I put in the concerted effort to lose some-mainly through portion size control and reducing wine intake. You still look a totally regular BMI anyway. I know nothing about that book.
Lovely lemon colours in your clothing and the wool! Good luck.

Your semi annual review is very inspiring Staysfit. Hopefully addressing health concerns early gives the opportunity for course correction before a major issue develops. I don’t follow a specific diet, (trying to eat as ‘healthy’ as reasonably possible) but I do pay attention to activity levels. Since retiring, I am in the fortunate position of being able to increase swimming and cycling which has kept my garments fitting.

Love the citron! It looks amazing on you, and great tempering with the khaki coloured pants and grey birks. Fun project with DD ….and win win for you both.

Agreed, citron is a great colour for you. I admire your specificity—I think specificity yields results.

As for a totally plant based diet… I admit to being a little wary because complete nutrition can be hard to achieve, esp if one tries to pay attention to all the other concerns out there (like eating locally, eating organic, on and on ) I just remember being in 90s Tucson and having trouble getting even an iceberg lettuce. They DID grow it in the desert; but that was a complete scandal water-wise… Anyways, also, as a person in the food industry, I feel calling something like tofu not highly processed is … not completely honest. And as a t1 diabetic who has some problems with nuts, I find it really hard to get calories and controllable carbs without bread. Anyways, tho, I like to say I’m ‘plant-forward’. A lot of fun recipes out there!

I love the citron color and you and the way the silver birks bring out your silver hair. Can't help with the diet because I am not familiar with that one. I will say, you don't look like you need to lose weight but it is more about how you feel of course. Smart to attack it from a health angle anyway.

I have done my best to track wears this year, my consistency fell off however, I learned some valuable information in the winter. I was content wearing mostly neutral outfits and color only 2 days/week on average. In December, DD helped with a major closet edit, which has left me with a smaller wardrobe. I am wearing everything except my formal clothes, and have noted that with a hybrid schedule, working two days remote, and three in person, my style has become more casual. Since the weather has become warmer, adding more color to my outfits has become a bigger priority. I am craving light bright lemon/citron, aqua or maybe sea-foam blue/green and it’s even better if the two colors are mixed together. Another color combination I am craving is a mixture of citron with orchid or raspberry. I have a limited selection of these colors in my wardrobe at present….however, I did find a raspberry dress from EF and a citron tee (also EF).

I have rediscovered taupe and oatmeal tones for warm weather.

My purchases so far this year have been very minimal. I am not counting yarn for socks or sweaters. Total items purchased to date = 7.

Two bikinis, two dresses, two tees, one pair of waterproof boots.

After the December closet edit I sent many items to resale at The Real Real. Since DD helped, I split the money earned with her and even so, the proceeds have paid for my 2022 purchases to date. Any additional purchases will come from my clothing budget.

I have been more critically evaluating the fit of my shoes. Too many of my friends, acquaintances and colleagues have developed bunions. I am much less tolerant of tight toe boxes and loose heels. Shoe shopping for the best fit is on the agenda.

I am still trying to improve my ability to mix and match individual pieces in my wardrobe. I think I’m doing a better job, however, I’m sure there is much room for improvement.

When I did my closet edit in December, there were many clothes that were too tight because I have gained weight. I’m not sure if this is Covid weight, or menopausal weight? I have not previously done anything to address the weight, however, I am ready to try. My attitude is more to make sure I am addressing my health more than my weight. I have looked at many options and have decided that I’m going to follow a WFPB diet per How not to Die and How not to Diet by Michael Greger, MD, FACLM. He suggests various herbs, spices and “tweaks” that may be used as and I may add them, however, my goal is long term health. If anyone has tried this, I would appreciate your thoughts.

I found some bright citron yarn and have a summer knitting project in mind.

Here is a picture of me in casual clothes. Barrel style pants from Veronica Beard with the citron EF tee and TNF hoodie.
