Lisa, I can see how dressing stylishly for your long and cold winters can confound you, extreme conditions are difficult to navigate, something I struggle with in my long, hot summers. You always look beautiful in your WIW posts. When I see your posts what always strikes me is that you have a great eye for putting together sophisticated and luxe outfits and your hair and makeup is immaculate.

As always an interesting read, thank you. L was touched by Angies comments on how the pandemic might be an influence on how we are feeling at the moment, wise woman ,and l would just add that maybe fashion and personal style is a journey rather than a destination, something that the perfectionists amongst us(l include myself in this) might find hard.

I applaud your efforts, Lisa. I can relate to the feeling of being a bit disorganized around style and wardrobe. And you are doing something about it, analyzing where you are and where you want to head. I'm too daunted by the mere idea of self-analysis--LOL!

I hear you on the uncertain year and dramatic lifestyle changes - I’ve really felt that on my end too! I really have found creativity through dressing this year - but only when I’ve been in the office, which hasn’t been much (WFH Again with Omicron.) my solution has been to feed my creativity through thrift shopping and some investment purchases…but I’m taking a break now and just enjoying my stuff. I don’t think I’m quite ready to reflect yet - I still feel ‘in the middle’ of it all!

Lisa - I was taking a online medical course and one of the physicians said something that really resonated...."Don't let perfect be the enemy of very good." IOW "anything worth doing well is worth doing poorly!" There simply is no substitute for time, journey - but for all of I patience and kindness to ourselves when we don't live up to our own standards is probably the hardest thing to do. As you are well aware, I think you are incredibly stylish - fun, polished, a little edgy and a total original. That's tough to navigate because there is only one YOU!! You've added some knock it out of the park pieces this year, but we all have those epic flails. God knows I have!! Wishing you joy in the holidays and all the years to come!! I look forward to seeing where the adventure takes you!!

I identify with this too Lisa, having switched to WFH in 2019. I don’t dress up to WFH. I miss dressing up! 3 years later I feel like I am finally getting somewhere with transitioning my wardrobe to more casual wear. (I was struck by what Jenn said about it taking 3 years to acclimate to a major life change.)

Have some patience. I think you are doing better than you think.

I find your posts amongst the most interesting on the forum, Lisa- you make everyone think.
It seems a pity to me that you appear to have trouble dressing in a way that makes you happy. Perhaps my perception is off and that’s not the case.
I do understand the loss of the interactions in your sales career being difficult. I’m sure I will feel the same when letting the career reduce over time. Dropping my second job in June 2020 was a good idea for me though, reduced the stress.
I always read your posts even if I don’t always comment!

I really appreciate the comments here . I know it’s mostly boring stuff that is navel -gazey at best . I’m not one for “ making excuses “ or cutting myself any slack , and still don’t feel comfortable blaming the pandemic for anything . I figure we are all in the same boat , and , well , “ life happens so deal with it “ is what I took away from my childhood and I’ve always operated that way .

I feel I actually did learn more about dressing myself this past year , and comments about now taking that forward are so bang - on .

I don’t count or consider my work wardrobe in any of these year / season end posts although that’s where the majority of my money is spent . Those clothes feel “ necessary “ where my casual and dressier things are where I have some latitude .

Again , thanks to those who read my thoughts - I always learn from these posts even if I’m just writing to myself

I’ll be honest, I think just getting dressed in anything the last 2 years is an accomplishment! Really, some days it was hard to know what was the ‘right’ thing to wear. Add retiring from your primary career to that, well it’s a lot. I think you’ve had a really eye opening year, and learned a lot, about what worked, and maybe more importantly what did not, about what you liked and did not like about your old work and about your new work. Now 2022 is about putting all that together. For what it’s worth, I think you have great style, and always look put together

Very insightful and self aware analysis Lisa. I heard you regarding the desire to be seen by like minded people. It made me realize some things about myself and my habits . Also regarding jeans - they accommodate weight loss so much easier than gain, which in my case might come down to the new ways weight is distributed on me. Adjusting to a new normal when so much of when the normal is constantly changing is not easy. I think appearing feminine and sophisticated is your style goal. The rest is the details. Of course, the devil is in the details.

Lisa, you did a very thorough analysis for someone who doesn't qualify herself as "organized", I'm not sure I could be as introspective. I agree with the others, transition and major lifestyle change are difficult for our minds and bodies. You can't really prepare ahead and if too much changes at one time you need to find a new anchor or foundation.
I am reading an interesting book, "What to Wear for the Rest of Your Life" by Kim Johnson Gross. It is a blueprint to finding your identity and a foundation in the face of change. Certainly not 100% applicable but the fact it offers some insight and solutions that can be adapted is making it a worthwhile read

Everything Angie said. This has been a crazy crazy time, you've been dealing with a big transition, and hey-- you've actually been looking great while doing it, even if you don't think so!

I sympathize with the abrupt sense of having nothing to dress for, nowhere to go; this was my early pandemic experience for sure and it was a shocker and a real style downer!

I LOVE your assessment about outerwear and your positive attitude towards those purchases. A coat in Winnipeg will seldom go unworn, so it's a great place to start a rejuvenation, and you have the confidence and flair to pull off so many types of outerwear along with a climate that demands it.

The quilted Aritzia piece and the summer dress/ top were fantastic choices as well.

I'm still whispering "jacket" "jacket" "jacket" but I also know how hard it can be to persuade oneself to wear one of those around the house. So I'm hoping for a slightly less COVID-full spring when you'll get opportunities to socialize and will be able to justify the odd structured piece for that.

Excellent assessment, Lisa P! Much more positive than you give yourself credit for, and fab things you can build on for 2022 :)

WELL DONE. I'm impressed!

Some points upfront:

It takes time to navigate a new lifestyle - and you're figuring it out. In Summer too - which was your so called "worst season"! I empathize with missing your "Rag Trade" setting. I would miss that too. Slowly but surely, you are getting there.

Your all-black work wardrobe at the Fitness Centre in sporty and casual attire - (and I'm SURE you are the best dressed person there)! - will take its toll. Especially if you are putting in more hours and your dress code is restricted. This puts pressure on the times you can dress how you want to - and that can feel like you can't fit in all that you want to because you love fashion! Or what you're wearing isn't good enough. Well. IT"S MORE THAN GOOD ENOUGH! You don't have to fight to be better. YOU ARE THERE :)

Most importantly, we are almost 2 years into the global pandemic, and our feelings of boredom, restlessness, uncertainty, and limbo may have little to do with our wardrobes and styles. Our state of minds are still adapting, catching up, prioritizing, processing, and trying to find the best ways forward, and it's challenging on many levels. Give yourself a big pat on the back! YOU ARE DOING GREAT!

I LOVE the new dresses - and skirt direction for Summer and transitional. Build on that.

I LOVE that those of us who have to wear a lot of outerwear make that our look, and priority in Winter. Build on that.

I suspect that you like outfit structure more than you think! (I think you might like the classics more than you think too, FWIW). Build on that. Yes to sweater welts that are snugger on the hips unless they are cropped or architectural.

Continue to grow your hair in the right places!

And let's help you find fab new jeans in a thoughtful manner next year! Let's see what you have first - pics and finds are great - do the assessment together - and build onto the capsule in the right way.

You are looking fit, healthy, stylish, and fabulous! You lucky fish :)

I keep coming back to how, every time I move, people mention that it takes about three years to acclimate to a new place. I wonder if that's true of major life changes, too. As much as we'd like to just flip a switch and adapt, humans require iteration to learn, which amounts to a few years of tinkering before we get it right.

I think of myself as a non-shy introvert (don't know if I'd go all the way to outgoing, though) and totally hear you on missing collaboration with people who "get it." For me, that happened when I stopped doing craft shows in 2020. It takes extra work to nourish those parts of myself now.

I have faith that you will figure out formulas that work. You're already on your way for summer. Once we get past the pandemic (it will happen...right?) you'll also probably find ways to reintegrate the trendy. artsy parts of yourself into your lifestyle. It's part of who you are.

Also, just to reiterate what others have said. You look great in every WIW you post, so you do know how to do this stuff and do it well.

I can relate to a lot of what you said. My style has become more casual, maybe because of Covid or maybe because it is just the way I want to dress now and it is acceptable at my work (I am the only woman in the office of a tool and die shop - no one notices or cares what I wear - except for me - haha).

I have a fairly limited budget so definitely feel, like you, that every purchase needs to be a slam dunk which maybe isn't reasonable. So I stress out about all of them and beat myself up if I end up not wearing something.

You look fab in your WIW's so you are definitely doing something right. Maybe that is a place to start?

Interesting read and lots of things I relate as well - like limited budget, no new jeans, looking for perfect pieces for off work, and more.
You found great new pieces and did a few miscalculations - all part of our difficult 2021. I think you did very well and should acknowledge the success and new direction into 2022.

To be quite honest, the first 18 months after retirement was way more emotional than I expected, and this impacted my closet most definitely! I wouldn’t be surprised if other retirees experience similar.

You may have retired from your long term career, but you are still in the workforce, from what I can tell. As such I can understand feeling a little chaotic - what with having to maintain a (black) work uniform capsule and a ‘retirement’ capsule. It’s like having multiple personalities, therefore multiple style personas! Your work persona is narrow and clearly defined by an externally imposed dress code, but you have no such strictures for your off duty looks, and I sense this is where you struggle. Who is the real Lisa? and what does she look like when she has only herself to please/dress for?

Question: if you didn’t have to wear black as a work uniform (i.e. when you are truly retired) do you think black will feature in your closet? Since I got the impression that you liked black, I’ve been a little surprised by your strong dislike of the requirement to wear it at work. FWIW, I think you manage to be appropriate and extremely stylish for your work environment!

I absolutely love the colours in the find #2 sweater, and have always hoped you’d post another couple of OOTD built around it. I also think you look smashing in cream colours/winter white.

"

Winter casual wear still confounds me and I don't feel I've hit on a successful formula yet." This. If you ever work it out, please share - it's just an unsolvable dilemma imo!!

Thanks for sharing these reflections - in some ways it's like you've hit a style 'perfect storm' - major life changes, major changes in the fashion world (silhouettes, etc.), and of course everyone's favourite pandemic - covid. It's no wonder you feel a little off kilter. I also totally get the pressure to make every piece a workhorse, and the difficulty in 'justifying' certain things when your lifestyle is primarily at home/casual. I wish I had good suggestions for you, but I'm afraid all I can offer is commiseration - as well as the note that your last few WIWs have been spectacular - so perhaps you are cracking through a little?!?

As for many /most of us, 2021 was a weird year. I struggled with no longer having my long time career in sales, and often missed the connections with retailers , wholesalers and buyers that I had built up over a few decades. Many were friends, and I realize now how my work fed my need for human contact (which sounds more dramatic that it is, but maybe you know what I mean) and helped fuel my creativity and passion for decor and fashion. I miss talking to like-minded people who "got it". I miss dressing for the job too - very much so.

As an outgoing introvert, it suited my personality perfectly.

I struggled with figuring out how I wanted to dress in my down time - away from my work at the medical fitness centre. Obviously, my needs were few, and that too was hard to get a handle on. I was used to justifying just about any purchase as being " perfect for work". I had never really paid a whole lot of attention to casual clothing before I "retired" , and all of a sudden I was stuck with some pretty uninspiring stuff that now was my main non-work wardrobe.

My spending budget also dropped - quite dramatically - and that took far too long to adjust to. What do you mean I can't get my nails done once a month? Buy a new bag every season? Buy 5 new pair of jeans because I no longer like my older ones? etc. I'm still trying to figure out my priorities and set a budget for my clothes and personal care. I'm not the most disciplined and organized person - likely no surprise there- and all of this caused unnecessary stress in our house.
Enough about that .

There are 5 things that I came away with from 2021 in terms of the things I bought and wore:

1. I purchased 2 pieces from Power of My People (Canadian ) that were perfect for upgrading my casual wardrobe and for adding the touch of femininity and sophistication (i.e. looking my age) I yearned for. One was a linen t top, and the other a midi linen cap sleeve shirt dress. Unfortunately, their fall /winter collections don't really speak to me, but I'll be back for more linen tops next spring.

2. Failures from spring /summer : chunky/cropped cardigans. Not flattering on me, and yet I bought 3 of them. Not sure what I'll do with them next year but for now they are out of my sight. Grr.

3. I purchased 2 fall/early winter coats that have been worn a ton. Both were perfect for fall, and layered nicely for milder winter days. Outerwear is my thing, and even with a reduced budget, I was able to update my look in colours and styles that I feel are bang-on for me. I would love to continue that success on into updating my winter puffers, but that's just going to have to wait until next fall. I'll live ;)

4. Every sweater I bought last year for fall and winter is sitting unworn . There weren't many, but what I did buy all were straight-bodied, slightly longish and generally shapeless. I put them on now and don't feel good in them. A small bit of weigh loss (10 lbs this past fall) turned these sweaters into baggy things I don't want to wear. Fortunately nothing was terribly pricey. Of course they are fine with jeans and under a coat, but what's up with all of these sweaters with no shape to them?? All of the bottom bands are the same diameter as the body of the sweater. (no, tucking them isn't the solution ) They feel and look matronly and unflattering to me now. Winter casual wear still confounds me and I don't feel I've hit on a successful formula yet.

5. I didn't solve my denim "dilemma". I don't think I bought any blue jeans in 2021 which must be a record for me- oh , except for a coated black cotton pair . Weight loss just made my jeans hang better, and didn't really necessitate a size change. Funny how the reverse doesn't seem happen though (gain weight and all of a sudden a new size is necessary, lol ) . Anyways, my top priority for the new year is to find one new pair of jeans - maybe black, maybe blue - that makes me feel more current .

Conclusions? I still feel like I'm floundering a bit. There's a lot of pressure to find " just the perfect piece" that meets many needs when budget is reduced , and fear of making a mistake has stopped my purchasing this fall. What I do buy has to pull it's weight now. I don't "need" anything - at all - but lowering my expectations for how I think I should look has been , well, interesting and humbling.

Find #1 is one of my new fall coats - Aritizia ,in ivory wool.
Photo 1 is another of my new fall coats. BB Dakota/Steve Madden
Photos 2 and 3 are the new pieces from POMP. The dress I purchased is in a black/white graphic print.
Finds #2,3 and 4 are the newest of my non-black/not -for -work sweaters. None bought this year. Finds 3 and 4 are too big to even want to wear now and I may donate them this week .
Find #5 is an expensive (in my world) chunky cardigan from BR that I obsessed over finding last spring - and that I look terrible in.

Thank you for reading. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all !
