A rich and thoughtful wrap-up, Staysfit! I chuckled at DD's contribution of "SIFFF", although quite astute and food for thought

It will be interesting to reflect on how much - or less - variety you need in order to achieve SIMPAT style. Happy, practical and fun outfit creations lie ahead for 2022!

LOVE your long silver locks, and also want to see the necklace!

We all have different levels of needing variety or comfort. I need less variety in the winter because warmth and comfort are a higher priority. But I still need some or I will become too bored. Your experiment sounds interesting! I predict boredom at some stage but wonder how long it will take?

Zaeobi, thanks for the nice suggestion regarding my style descriptors. I can test them out because I try to keep them in mind when I create outfits as well as when I shop.

JenniNZ, I am certain that, like you, tracking wears will reveal that I am not making use of my dressy heels. They are the least used part of my wardrobe, yet they take up space in my closet. I need to ask myself how many special occasion to keep? I feel an edit coming!

It’s interesting how we associate the potential length of a cure with the severity of the concern. I think motivation plays a key role as well. In my case, a very large wardrobe only started to bother me when it no longer fit into the walk in closet I share with DH. I understand how and why my wardrobe expanded. I started purchasing to cope with loss (multiple deaths in one year) and I wanted to do something for myself. I knew very little about style or how to cultivate a working wardrobe. I did not like my clothes or feel good in them, and they did not fit me well. Purchasing clothes felt decadent and soothing which can be addictive and at the time filled an emotional need in an inappropriate manner. The process of developing personal style however, has been therapeutic, and added much to my confidence and self esteem. I am lucky, I never overspent my budget. However, I did buy more than I needed or wanted. I ask myself why do I want less now? What is my motivation? Improving the ecological sustainability of my behaviors certainly plays a role. Additionally, I think my emotional needs have changed. A defined personal style, improved confidence and better self esteem mean less need to seek emotional comfort through retail therapy. Since I cannot maintain the illusion of certainty in my life I feel motivated to implement strategies that provide comfort, security and control. At present this is taking the form of adhering to routines, simplifying tasks, strengthening personal relationships, and decreasing stress in my environment particularly visual clutter.

Roberta, I will look at Google Sheets to see if I can figure them out, I have never tried!

Gryffin, thanks for your kind words! I suspect that as I track wears I will learns that certain outfit combos feel most like “me”. I hope that will help me eliminate the clothes I do not wear or enjoy. The idea of uniform dressing holds some appeal due to its simplicity. I already know my favorite winter outfit is jeans and a grey turtleneck. Maybe I should try wearing this combo everyday as an experiment?

This analysis was lovely to read, thank you. I'm glad to hear you're liking your longer hair - it sounds like mine is similar to yours (low porosity & swavy aka 'wavy-curly' lol) & it was definitely a process to learn how to look after my hair too! You may find you need to switch up your routine in the summer vs winter too - right now mine is a frizzy mess because of the *loss* of humidity in winter. Who'd have thought, eh?

I'm wondering if, instead of 'light & fun' you could go with 'quietly/ refined quirky'? That could help to incorporate the Classic part of your moniker but with more alliteration lol

Glad you found it helpful! I think starting with what you put on is great. Everyone has to start somewhere. I guessed how many times I had worn things already when I started. I arrange each category by year because I knew which year I had bought something due to my earlier records of purchase years since 2011.
Here is a pic of how I do it, this is about half of one of my two summer pages. But do it your own way so it is useful to you.
After 5 years of doing it I wonder if I have become obsessed. But it has really helped my “addicted to buying clothes” feeling to settle down, a feeling I had had since about 2008 when menopause and bullying and weight gain all coincided in an awful way. I suppose it depends how bad the issues were as to how long to take the cure! I know so much more now. I know I will hardly ever wear skirts to work. I know high heels will sit unworn, even “going out to dinner” ones because we might have to park up the road from the restaurant so I will want something more comfortable to walk in, etc, etc.
Similar to what Roberta says just above me.

I think your idea of starting to track wardrobe items as you go rather than building the entire spreadsheet from scratch is a really good one! I started doing this in a simple Google doc 5 years ago with what I purchased (month by month, for a year), and over time it has been very useful to look back and see what was a big success, what got worn occasionally, and what was clearly a fail. That worked out so well that I used the sheets to make a wardrobe inventory.

Excel can be a nightmare and Google Sheets are sooo much simpler.

Staysfit - what an insightful and thought provoking read!! A well thought out and doable plan for 2022. Congrats on solving the hair care problem. Throwing much love at Innersense. I have baby fine, wavy, porous hair and stopped coloring during the pandemic. My frizz was unbelievable. I have used Davines Love products for years. In an effort to decrease toxins and find something new EWG.org had the info on Innersense. As I prefer smooth glass like shiny hair and mine is fine - I am using Pure Harmony hairbath and Pure inspiration conditioner and it's literally given me back my hair. So I it's great to know it's fab for the curly and fine straight. Amazing products!!
Like everyone else I'm chuckling at your DD

“Single item functional fashion fixedness” I tend to pick best combo outfits and wear them on repeat. I do tend to be a uniform dresser so this works. I have been tracking outfits for the last 3 yrs and do find I swap up belts and boots so my outfits do vary but very slightly sometimes. You certainly can get more mileage out of your wardrobe if you enjoy swapping it up, unless having highest happiness factor is of utmost importance. Sometimes the stars align and the angels sing. You've gotta respect that.
I'm intrigued by the french 5. I think it might be something I could find helpful too. Limiting the unusual, iconic and statements while concentrating on upgrading or replacing worn out items. Will need to ponder.
Love the sound of your necklace. I have a collection of harmony ball pendants that chime from the 90's and they do the same for me. Interesting, resonant, person touchstones - sound wonderful.
Much luck to you on your style journey and beaming health, peace and safety to you as you continue your work. Be well and beaming strength to you!!

My tracking process is done on my laptop but not in excel. I have listed all my pants together, dresses together, skirts together, etc. Next to each item there is a bracketed number, which I update each time I wear the item. I find this is working for me and I also at a glance can see what is in my wardrobe when thinking of outfit creation. I do not track loungewear, shoes, bags, hats, scarves.

JenniNZ, I had hoped someone would share their tracking categories! Thanks! Instead of an inventory, which might take too long, I wonder about creating the inventory/tracking list as I wear things? I could have a sheet for tops, toppers, pants, shoes. Then I could either add the item I wear to the list or make a tally mark if it has already been used that season, etc. At the end of a season, anything not on the list would need assessing to see if I should keep or give it away. My friend suggested I move the items I wear to a separate section of my closet so I can more easily tell which are being used.

lisap, I will try to get a pic of my necklace soon!

SarahD8, yes, I am worried that “fun” might end up as kooky or clownish and that is not at all what I want.

As Robin F. notes, my sense of fun would be adding quite edge or subtle quirkiness while maintaining a mostly modern classic aesthetic.

cat2, thanks for sharing your outfit creation strategy. I plan to try this and see what happens.

With regard to Excel: I’m not good with it either. I got my son to set up my spreadsheets for my professional contractor accounts and now I just do each one on top of the old one and re-save!
So although I re-write my clothes tracking lists every so often due to their becoming scrappy, I am actually quite happy having my tracking sheets on an A4 pad and just making tally marks. I don’t go as far as documenting hats/gloves etc though!
I track tops, bottoms, toppers, coats, dresses and footwear. I don’t track things like specific gardening or painting old outfits and not necessarily major dress-up costume party items as I have a separate storage area for that stuff. (For example I was going to dress as Stevie Nicks for a friend’s 60th with an ST theme- all the fringing and scarves would not be tracked. Sadly that party was cancelled for our Delta lockdown.)
I have very much found after over 5 years of tracking that I don’t need to buy nearly as much as I thought I did.
Your ideas on finessing your profile sound very good.

You have worked really hard over the past several years to refine your wardrobe and now you are really reaping the rewards.

Great that you could recognize your changing footwear needs and so quickly implement a new solution by (it sounds like?) leaning on a different subset of what was already in your closet.

"Functional fashion fixedness" also sounds like a really useful insight and I have no doubt you will be able to achieve your goal of finding more ways to wear your individual items. I hope you will share some of the process/results as I think I could learn from it too.

My two cents' worth: I really like the term "light" for you. It seems more nuanced than "fun"; I think that fun can sometimes shade over into kooky iykwim. Your serotonin necklace sounds like the perfect balance -- subtle quirkiness but refined, and with some intellectual heft underpinning it. Maybe a piece you could turn to as a kind of amulet to see if your potential additions have the same ineffable qualities?

On the remixing, for work clothes I literally toss everything that is in season and fits onto the bed and try to see how many outfits I can generate, and then give each one a wear. That forces me to consider new combinations, and then once I take the time to add the right accessories, to new looks. If you do it without judgment about what goes with what, you will notice that the print in a top makes it work with different pants than you thought, or that you can pull together some different color combinations you had not considered when you were out shopping. This process is why I don’t worry about orphan pieces, because eventually everything finds at least one outfit, and usually more.

CocoLion, I agree that FFF contributes to that 80/20 phenomenon. As I track wears, I am going to find out how much I really do wear…..probably less than that 20%! DD’s advice to do an inventory as the first step is making more sense to me now……It’s really needed along with tracking wears, so I am going to add it to my 2022 goals. The big question is whether I should use a spreadsheet (struggle with excel) or just count and write it on a notepad……

Sal, thanks! I also enjoy reading your posts! I look forward to seeing more from you in 2022!

Bijou, thanks! A monthly style challenge would be a great way to push me to mix things in new ways. I agree that longer hair removed some edge that I am now looking to add back in another way.

Helena, when you wear things the same way is it FFF or is it because that’s how they work best for you or how you most enjoy wearing them? I am planning to explore these questions since I think it’s FFF in my case.

Suz, Yes, DD is a wordsmith and almost impossible to beat at Banana-grams and Scrabble. Perhaps you’re correct that it is harder to mix textures than patterns to achieve variety. I enjoy color although DD would say my FFF is most evident when mixing my colored pieces.

Shevia, yesterday, DD pointed out that I can mix and match my beanies and scarves randomly, however, I tend to rigidly pair the same hat with the same scarf each time (I have three of each) although I switch up my coats. It’s another form of FFF!

Suntiger, thanks! The more I consider them, the better I like the new adjectives.

Marybeth, thanks! A fashion mission statement for 2022! Decisive is an excellent adjective for me at this point in my life.

Joy, yes, yes, yes! Thanks for the excellent suggestions! I like mixing casual and dressy pieces so experimenting more with this as a way to create edge seems a good way for me to experiment and be more creative.

I hardly ever wear the same outfit over again. I believe that having a column of various neutrals helps with this. It may help you to vary your outfits. Some of the neutral pieces can turn a wild card into an outfit without effort. Also a collection of print scarves or tops can help pull a outfit together, so can same color footwear and bag. You can probably pull some of this from your wardrobe to start mixing your outfits for different looks. Also mix dressy with casual, etc. a. Help you obtain that quiet edge that you want.

This was such an enjoyable read! I see this last part of your analysis as your mission statement, and I think it should be reflected in your Adjectives: "I am seeing my aesthetic as less classically feminine but not masculine either. I’m not sure androgynous would be a good description. I am looking for some quiet edge, and perhaps some subtle quirkiness to add interest to my otherwise simple and modern classic wardrobe in 2022."

To me, your unwillingness to be sidetracked with quibbling over feminine-masculine-androgynous questions, and a desire to just get on with the important, the relevant, and the fun stuff, makes me think you might add "Decisive" to your adjectives.

Sleek, Classic, Fresh, Functional and Fun... and Decisive.

Sounds great! Excellent news on the hair front -the right products make such a difference. Also latched on to FFF (for short) - although I do mix things up I have not specifically considered whether I am relegating some items to a single use. Interesting thought! Knitting for relaxation and socialization sounds perfect. Agree that your hair offsets any masculine edge to your wardrobe and look forward to more WIWs in the new year.

Staysfit, thank you for this thoughtful assessment of where you've been and where you are now. I laughed at your daughter's diagnosis of "single item functional fashion fixedness" -- she's a wordsmith as well as an artist! It's easy to fall into that pattern, especially when we are dressing for comfort -- certain items become part of favourite fallback combinations and that's that. But it's true -- mixing things up can prevent wardrobe boredom and overbuying. It might be easier for those who pattern mix, though. If you don't like pattern mixing or colour mixing (much) then I think it's tougher.

I like the idea of adding "fun" to your style statement. I don't think there is much chance of your forgetting "light." But "fun" might be something you aspire to inject a little more of in your outfits. Why not try it on for size? Plus, I hope we get to see that necklace soon!

Glad the hair is working out so well for you! YLF is truly fab! A world of wisdom at your fingertips.

Staysfit, it is always a treat to read your posts. With your hair longer and curly, you are not going to look masculine. Where your short hair gave you an element of edge in your style, perhaps now you seek it in your clothes. I have high hopes for your hand knits, I am sure they will be unique and beautiful pieces.

As someone who looks after the mental health of young people, I am sure the last 2 years have been busy and at times difficult. Thank you for the important work that you do. I hope your wardrobe provides you joy, adding fun into your style statement seems like a good way to do this.

Perhaps we need to set you a monthly style challenge. A one item worn five different ways in the month, so that you change how you wear clothes. Angie’s posts when she acquires a new item would be a good starting point, because she makes about 15 fabulous outfits with each new piece.

Adding to Covid Chaos, we endured a five-month home
renovation, I started a new hybrid work schedule, and our daughter moved across the country. I gained just over 10 lbs. I want to believe its muscle bulk since I lifted weights while my Pilates equipment, treadmill, and bicycle sat under plastic to protect them from dust, however, menopause and stress eating are also possibilities. I had to sort and shuffle my wardrobe to remove snug items. I set a 6-month deadline, and if I am not able to fit back into the snug items, I will give them away. Despite everything,.my general style preferences and color palette remains consistent over time. I rely primarily on solid neutrals
and specific colors, very little pattern, and enjoy using texture to create contrast in my outfits.

Angie’s SIMPAT Style post resonated with my current sensibilities. My longstanding style statement: Genuine Composed seems compatible with SIMPAT style. I am rethinking my style adjectives for 2022: Sleek, Classic, and Fresh work well for me but I am less certain of Practical and Light. I may switch the adjective Practical to Functional. The change is subtle, however, in my thinking,
the word functional combines multiple aspects of Angie’s SIMPAT Style -Practical, Manageable, comfortable (comfort for me is Therapeutic), and sustainable). I am considering a switch to “fun” instead of “light”, making my proposed adjectives: Sleek, Classic, Fresh, Functional and Fun. It’s more alliterative and easier to remember, however, “light” may better represent the positive emotional qualities of joy and happiness, while also signaling that the clothing I choose is not heavy, chunky, dark, oversized, or ornate, etc.
I welcome suggestions here??

A goal accomplished this year has been learning how to care for my long hair. YLF friends helped me locate good resources. Gigi suggested two curly hair courses. I purchased Atoya’s Curl course which was fun and helped me target hair products appropriate for my low porosity, coarse, thick, wavy hair. I use Innersense hair products which are pricey, and my scalp no longer feels itchy between washings, and frizz is under good control even on humid days. RoseandJoan’s suggestion for
styling day 2-4 hair works wonders! I have waves and curls every day of the week! Many thanks for all the helpful suggestions!

In 2021 I replaced a necklace that has pendants representing the chemical structures of some neurotransmitters (serotonin, dopamine, etc). To my eye, it looks interesting and suits my professional role. I admit it’s quirky, not classic, but it is the sort of quirky I like and perhaps it's "fun".

My footwear needs for fall/winter have shifted slightly. Office space large enough for social distancing is hard to find in the schools where I work, so I am often sent to a conference building situated across the parking lot from the school. I encounter puddles and ice multiple times a day as I walk between the two buildings. Not wanting to constantly switch footwear I am relying on lug soled shoes, sneakers, and low-heeled weather-resistant boots. My favorite statement shoes from The Office of Angela Scott are collecting dust.

My daughter aptly told me I suffer from “single item functional fashion fixedness” (more alliteration), meaning I do not change up
how I wear an individual article of clothing and as a result, to get variety in my outfits, I end up purchasing more than I might otherwise need. Therefore, for 2022, one of my goals is to be more flexible and creative in mixing the pieces I already own into new combinations with an
eye towards making fewer purchases. To aid my efforts, I realized it would be helpful to accurately record what I wear and to analyze it.I have experimented with writing my daily outfit choices on a calendar. My experimental tracking has been consistent enough that I feel ready to commit to tracking my outfits for the first three months of 2022.

I expect to add some hand-knit items to my wardrobe in 2022. Knitting has recently become both a therapeutic and social hobby (I attend a knitting group at the Local yarn store once a week) with the benefit that what I make may fit and be useful. However, I am currently knitting with an intention to improve certain skills, not to enhance my style or wardrobe. I am unlikely to count my hand-knit items among my wardrobe purchases in 2022.

Other than finding a new swimsuit that fits, I do not have any major wardrobe holes to fill in 2022. In 2021 I had some success updating my style by adding colored denim jeans in modern cuts. Even though I cannot identify anything I need at present, I want my wardrobe
to remain fresh and modern. In the past, I have made purchases randomly and impulsively. In 2022 I would like to channel my emotion and temper it with intentionality and mindfulness. To accomplish this, I believe the best approach would be to focus on updated versions of my wardrobe essentials and or some modern statement items. Wild card items are always possible but should obviously be the most limited, and trendy among my purchases. In 2021, for example, I purchased some barrel-cut denim jeans which do not fit my style aesthetic, yet I loved the comfort and variety they provided and committed to wearing them regularly.

Using the concept of 5-piece French Wardrobe appeals as a way to
improve the intentionality of my purchases in 2022. Of the purchases I made in 2021, 33 were replacements of basic items and 11 were either updated essential pieces, statements, or a wild card. I believe I can commit to the limit of 5 new items per season not counting
replacement items. I will continue to maintain a one in one out strategy, although I have generally removed more than one item for every new item purchased over the past two years. Knowing that my outfit choices have skewed more casual, one of my first goals in 2022 will be to review my list of essentials. The 2021 list includes camisole tops which I
wore under blazers, however, I am now more prone to wearing tees and sleeveless blouses than camisoles. I still feel drawn to sharp tailored pieces, knits, sleek long vertical lines, and geometrics. I am
seeing my aesthetic as less classically feminine but not masculine either. I’m not sure androgynous would be a good description. I am looking for some quiet edge, and perhaps some subtle quirkiness to add interest to my otherwise simple and modern classic wardrobe in 2022.

Thanks for reading! Happy New Year!
