Not only did I keep the boots, I cut the tags and wore them to SFMOMA today for a much-needed museum visit. They were so comfortable! And much less clicky heels than I imagined. And I got to observe current styles among the museum-going set. Lots of younger folks in Gen Z outfits.

I am no longer beating myself up about all the shirts because I do wear them all the time. The surprise was how many of the shirts were new this year, but as you all say, they'll last. But I have a strict cap on my wardrobe size -- I have very limited closet space so I make myself stick to a fixed number of hangers (conveniently Ikea discontinued my hangers years ago so I can't cheat and buy more). I should pass along a few older things but I can still squeeze everything in, barely.

Well, I see a very successful refresh, tbh. All of these pieces seem aligned with your style, and clothes don’t last forever. So, it makes sense to replace essentials — especially when retail actually has something you like that you can replace with!

I hope you aren’t beating yourself up on the shirts. I see these as core to your style and shirts never date. Stocking up was really smart! High fives all around!

Clearly, I went into the wrong discipline! We started teaching second semester of the PhD—I got out of it for a year as an RA, but that was it. Course reductions for new faculty are one course. Even post-docs usually include a course or two.

On the heel protectors, yes, they make them for tiny heels too. You could also get them in a set with a piece for the front of the shoe to give it traction. Lol at the image of you guys tip-toeing around, especially in such @$$-kicking boots.

Yup, masks here too - but it was surprisingly ok. I've been wearing Vogmask fabric masks, almost KN95 protection but more flexible so they seal better on my face. Very breathable. And I got lucky and got an amazing old fashioned classroom with mile-high windows that opened, so I had a nice healthy breeze every day.

Do new heel tips work for kitten heels like that? I do it on block heels all the time, get softer rubber to make them quieter, but I wasn't sure if they can use soft material with such a small surface area.

I'm getting so tempted to keep them... I wish they were cheaper!

Ok, I love what you bought!! it's so consistent with your style, so YOU, and so cohesive. There is stuff here for all seasons. There is stuff here for different levels of formality, and stuff that can be mixed well for fun juxtapositions. I actually find this quite inspiring because seeing so many purchases together shows how very well you know yourself and what you want to project.

I was going to suggest what phoebe said -- you can put something on the heels to make them stop clicking. It will also make them less dangerous/ slippy to walk in on slick surfaces. I concur with Bijou. -- if they re comfortable, those look distinctive and very cool for you.

It was fun to be teaching in the real world, right? We were all masked up here (a whole other issue) but it was still great. And wow, did I ever wear more actual clothes this year than in the previous year!!!

Bijou, those boots are amazing!

Stagiaire, I was a teaching assistant for two semesters at the beginning of grad school, but that was over 15 years ago and no one expected me to look professional! I remember one student evaluation mentioned my Converse with purple shoelaces. These days I still wear Converse but with interesting blazers rather than old t-shirts.

In my field, postdocs rarely teach, and I did a particularly long combination of postdoc positions. I taught a few guest lectures for friends' classes over the years, but that's all. And then at the beginning of my faculty job I had a year off from teaching to get my research lab going (which is meant to be my main focus). So my first full semester teaching was in spring 2020, and I only had a few weeks in the classroom before we went fully remote for the pandemic. Now we're back in person! Teaching isn't a large part of my job expectations overall, but it took up a fair bit of time this past year as I develop new courses. It's been really fun.

Clicking heels are often improved by resoling with rubber. I used to wear a lot of leather soled shoes and I would have a rubber sole cut into the forefoot and the heels taps replaced too.

This is all such smart casual stuff—very nice. But mostly I’m amazed that it sounds like you got all the way through grad school and a post doc without having to teach. Can that be right? So jelly!

Wow - you bought some really fantastic pieces ! I especially love your jeans collection. No comment from me on buying a lot - this doesn’t seem unreasonable at all for a year of updating. And hey - with a job that puts you in front of people - one needs to be dressed well ! And further to the spiky Zara boots - I can’t with clicky shoes either . Nothing sounds more silly and prissy than heels clacking away on flooring . I die when mine do that at work and have actually walked on my toes to mitigate it - and then never wear those shoes to work again

I think these picks are so consistent with your style that it would be hard to go wrong. That said, I understand — I overbought this year, no question. And I bought dressier items than I need, silly me. Hello, like I needed a plaid taffeta skirt??

But I’m keeping in mind that these items are not likely to date — they are true to my style — so as the world opens back up more, I will have items in my closet ready to go. In fact, my husband remarked that having some dressier stuff just waiting to make an appearance, is making him want to make reasons to wear it. Last week we got more dressed up than absolutely necessary to go out and have a dinner in a restaurant where we could have just as easily worn jeans and tees.

So I don’t see even the dressier items you chose being poor choices — if you love them, I think the occasions will pop up when you can finally give them more outings, and you’ll be glad you have them!

Greyscale - those boots are distinctive and seem to capture your style. If they do, they could be your formal footwear, your 'one and done' solution. I can see them being the perfect footwear for a wedding, a ball or for Christmas as long as they are comfy.

I have some signature formal boots that I love to wear on occasions. In fact, I wore my 'crazy' boots yesterday to a pub for a Christmas catch up with friends.

It's not over yet, so true... but we'll get there. And Jessi, you're right, there's some sort of psychological security in stockpiling.

Thanks, all. It does look rather cohesive when I see it all together! And very practical and wearable. But along the same lines, this collection could stand on its own as all the clothes I'd need for a year...

I did mostly avoid splurges on things I'd never wear. I am in love with these expensive Zara boots but planning to return them because they're just not going to get use. I get so self-conscious at clicky heel noises... But just imagine wearing them to all the gallery openings and cocktail parties of my fantasy life! (They're $200, so even if I were ok with cheap fast fashion I only wear a few times, this ain't it.)

Actually, I think you did great. This looks (and reads) as a pretty tight collection.

This is a VERY CONFUSING time, so I'm glad to see you're not being too hard on yourself. Even buying duplicates could be seen as a bid for security when under stress. Not necessarily logical, but definitely understandable.

Well I love your picks and find it fun to read your reasoning behind them. I think you need to remember that starting any new job, and especially a public facing one, is pretty exhausting and it will be a while before you find the social life/work balance that works for you - apart from the enormous effect of Covid. And it is not over yet, sigh.
