Wet cold is much colder than dry cold. It doesn't get below freezing here (or even very close) but everyone still gets very cold on a rainy day. Love the idea of a theme park capsule!

Finally back to finish responding. Sorry it took me so long!

Gretchen, what a great question about differing needs for date nights vs, going to the parks with guests! When my husband and I go alone, it will be much slower-paced, I think. We'd be more likely to just go for a few hours, people-watch, have a sit-down meal and drinks, and do a ride or two while we're there. Guests, I'm sure, will want the whole experience, trying to do everything in limited time, so clothing for that will need to be much more functional. Disneyland also has an unofficial event called "Dapper Day" twice a year that we may participate in, so that will be another small part of the capsule, though that's more costume than wardrobe.

bj1111, my husband has only been there for 3 months and he already spends all his time in Colorado shivering!

JAileen, my theme park capsule is kind of akin to your birdwatching capsule, I think. Necessary clothing for an activity we do a lot of that's not necessarily "gear."

smittie, our park visits will be a bit more laid-back than vacation trips, but yes, good shoes are essential.

rachylou, what you just said about puffers over summer clothes makes so much sense! And honestly, they pack down super small and are easy to pull out for temperature shifts, so it makes total sense.

Suz, that signal of "I'm getting down to work now" is exactly why the WFH uniform worked so well for me. I'm back to square one on it because I wore mine into the ground after deciding on one a few years ago. The knit button-down tunics I got have been demoted to sleepwear, and my easy ponte pants are finally starting to show some wear (spandex pilling) after 118 wears. It's time to reassess my needs, and hopefully find a new uniform that will serve me for just as long. I'm looking forward to seeing your 2019 goals!

LaPed, I really hope I do find some easy dresses this summer to carry me through both summer and hot fall. The move will happen in June or July, so I'll get the full experience of the long tail-end of summer this year.

torontogirl, since I started doing the French 5, I've been so much more at peace with my wardrobe! 10 statement pieces a year has been more than enough to keep me engaged and interested.

cindysmith, I've never not lived in a 4-season climate. This will be so new to me!

Cee, is Wurlitzer even still around?

Joy, I appreciate your insights so very much! My husband's parents, as well as his aunts, uncles, and cousins, are all native Californians, so we're familiar with the culture from that perspective. It's funny that many of them have migrated to Colorado over the years, while we're going the other direction. I won't have any kids in school by the time we move-- my son is graduating in June--so that's an adjustment we don't have to worry about. There WILL be Santa Ana winds. And I will definitely keep in mind your wisdom that it gets better. I will confess that when I was last week, I left feeling kind of unmoored. Like, "What IS this place? And how will I possibly live there?"

Jane, ooh, I bet EuroDisney is much more stylish in general than Disneyland and DisneyWorld!

Jenn, I admire your practical and very well contained style goals. I hope you are feeling better. I would love to have the need for a theme park capsule. When I've been to EuroDisney, the Italians and the French really seemed to understand how to do theme parks in a very stylish way!

On the weather, I can't really comment as the UK has such a moderate climate, but I know that sky colour means a lot to me!

Also: I think I’m officially old this year. My knees have started hurting when it rains... which of course it didn’t do for a long long time. I don’t know why wet cold should be so much more awful, but I’m here to say it is!

Jenn, I hope you are feeling better. As I remember, Californians dress casually , but expensive casual. It was a relief to move to Kansas where what you spent on an ourfit did not matter as much. Looks and first impressions are important and will be very important to children in school
It is normal to hate California the first year. But it gets better for some reason. You have loads of class and will have no problem. Adjusting to the temperatures will be an experience. Will you be living in an area that has Santa Ana winds (hot). There is no down time because the weather is always beautiful. houses and yards are very small but you will want to be outside at the beach or someplace anyway. You will be realativly close to many natural wonders. We found that neighbors were beach people, desert people or river (Colorsdo River and water skiing) people. A few were mountain people. I wish you a great transition. Most Californian's we knew had never been east of Las Vegas unless on a required business trip. They saw. no reason to see more of the US. I can't wait to hear what you think....be prepared to be a minority. It is weird but educational.

Thanks for the weather validation La Ped, Suz, and of course Jenn (hope you're feeling better). Wet cold is the WORST. It's the same weather in most of Western Europe and the UK. And when you're outside a lot like me - you feel cold. Especially with the wind.
Suz, I've heard that Vancouver is even rainier than Seattle - NOT FUN. And it's going to rain till June..... *sobbing*

Threadjack: It's so true about the damp cold. I remember when I first moved to Vancouver the last time I lived here (mid-2000s). I was at a party supply store picking up stuff for my kid's birthday party. That was early November. The day was not cold by the thermometer but felt quite unpleasant. At the cash, the guy ringing up my items mentioned the same thing and we commiserated for a second. He said to me, "Listen. I'm from WINNIPEG. I know from cold! But honestly? It sometimes feels even worse here! My family thinks I'm nuts, but..."

LaPed, agree 1000% on the freeze-thaw cycle back east. That is exactly, exactly, exactly Kingston's weather. Ugh. By comparison, I still find Vancouver mild. Apparently, though, it wouldn't suit Angie because statistically the city is considerably colder, cloudier, and rainier than Seattle! Despite their proximity.

The stats are a bit deceiving though -- Vancouver's rains tend to be harder but a lot the rain falls at night, leaving the days cloudy but not so rainy. Also, the stats generalize the rainfall over the whole city, when in fact, there's a huge difference between North Vancouver and Vancouver proper -- I live in the south and west part of the city and we apparently get less rain that Seattle here and our temps are the same or even a bit higher. Micro-climates rule in these parts.

I remember being baffled by the way folks in the southwest break out winter wear when temps drop into the 50s and 60s. There's definitely a psychological element to this, I suspect...

Agree with Angie that wet cold really is the worst. One of the results of climate change is that New England's long winters involve a lot more sleet and freezing rain in place of true snow, and an endless cycle of freeze-thaw. My yard and driveway often look like a skating rink! And when temps hover right around freezing, the real danger is breaking a sweat from being OVER-dressed. It's once you get a little bit sweaty that you end up truly chilled.

Like Angie and Suz, I predict that simple skirts and dresses may play a larger role in your CA closet, and could be really useful work-at-home pieces.

Jenni NZ -- I remember those Old Navy 4th of July tees! I think they released (maybe still do?) a new design each summer and some people collect them. It's a bit like Hard Rock Cafe tees, I guess.

The wet cold cuts right through you, whereas the dry cold is more bearable and you can effectively insulate for it. I'll be writing a post on that soon too.

You see men and boys in Seattle wear shorts with polar fleece and beanies in Winter. They're cold because they look cold cowering with their hands in their pockets - some even shivering. I don't know why they insist on wearing shorts.

Jenn, as usual, I am so inspired by you. Wow. So organized, efficient, reflective and prepared. No wonder your wardrobe works so well for you. I am impressed!

I need to review the principles of the French 5. I think you linked to that last year. Regardless, I think you are wise to factor in late summer boredom. I really loved those EF linen wide legs you bought this year and the similar colour tank. That type of piece transitions beautifully into a hot fall and getting a few more of those to mix and match could be a great idea.

I hear you on the working uniform, too. I shared that goal a couple of years ago but it ended up not working for me. My days were too broken up (too many changes of clothes at inconvenient times) and some of the pieces I thought would satisfy me for this uniform failed to. So instead I went back to my FFB outfits -- in winter, jeans, socks, a pullover (which I accessorize or supplement when leaving the house) and in summer shorts and tops or -- last year -- casual dresses. The casual dresses were a godsend. Much cooler. But there is still something about a work "uniform" that deeply appeals to me -- maybe in part because it helps to ritualize the activity and tells you "I am working now."

I have not yet formulated my own goals because I'm still working on my year end wrap up, but at least one goal will involve dressing for a new climate and purchasing with that in mind. Like you, I have found there to be considerable overlap. Some items that are more rarely worn in Ontario have become workhorses here, while others that I wore all the time there are much less necessary here, but still worn occasionally. There are still 4 seasons. I've also noticed something similar to what you notice with respect to people's dressing habits in different locales. In Vancouver you'll see people in big puffers on days when Ontarians would be wearing wool coats at most. Having said that, the damp air can be penetrating here.

Amusement parks are not my thing, but it’s nice that you have something you can do together as a family.

Jenni, I saw sweatshirts that said Hollister and wondered about that. A town of 35K in Central California? Then I realized it was a company.

JenniNZ, Old Navy slapping their brand on everything has always puzzled me, because they’re not even a higher-end, covetable store. What reason does anyone have for buying Old Navy logo clothing?

Did I say on the forum about how when we took the family to Disneyland on 4 July 2002, I thought maybe there was a special rememberance of the role your Navy had played in US defence over the decades, because everyone had Old Navy on their fronts? I was a bit disappointed when I asked someone and they said it was just a brand! It was ubiquitous that day.

Sara, yes, lots of gear, but I’m thinking more easy widelegs or utility pants with graphic tees, comfortable shoes, and lightweight toppers that can be easily stuffed into a bag.

Looking at your 2018 shopping post, I thought those clothes were arty creative and cohesive. Your ood posts of wfh showed that capsule to great effect.

Those seem like very workable goals. I'm interested in your theme park capsule. Last time I was at a theme park almost everyone was in gear - leggings as pants, sneakers, and workout tops/sweatshirts. I was a little surprised that everyone looked they were going to a yoga class or out for a jog.

Barbara Diane, capsules would be from current clothing and items added as others wear out. About half of my current wardrobe is from 2016 and earlier, so at least some of those items will be leaving as they reach the ends of their lives. I don’t do a true capsule wardrobe, just use them as niches I need to be aware of when purchasing. Perhaps it would be more appropriate to call it “one out, one in” than the opposite.

Others might call it “filling wardrobe holes,” but that terminology of need doesn’t work for me and my goals. It makes it too easy for me to justify items as necessities when they’re not really.

My goals are different-haven’t been to a theme park in years, etc.
Wondering if your capsules are going to be from your current wardrobe? If not, and you like your current clothing, I’m wondering why get rid of items you like to make room for the capsule items? Just wondering, curious.

What great goals! As a former Coloradan, I agree on the difference in temperature sensitivity, but similar approaches to clothes.

I’ll be interested to see how your theme park capsule evolves - will it you have different needs when you have vacationing guests vs date nights?

Also with you on a stronger work at home capsule. It’s one of my goals too,

I'm finally back from my post-New Year's travel, and ready to set some 2019 goals. I'm basing some of of these on last year's goals, and some are completely new.

Continue using the 5-piece French system, with two annual purchasing seasons, focusing on supporting brands that match my lifestyle and values. This is basically a carryover from 2018, with more emphasis on sustainable shopping.

Keep my mid-year relocation plans in mind when purchasing. I'm actually finding the southern California clothing requirements to be similar to Colorado, minus the need to be prepared for below-freezing temps. The need for layering pieces because of large day-night temperature shifts is the same. The summers are similarly hot, but that season lasts an extra few months in SoCal, so I'll need to be prepared to alleviate some summer boredom and put more of my budget towards (ugh) warm-weather clothes. I was struck coming home last night, that people in Colorado wear lighter clothing at 39º (shorts?!, but also light jackets or sweatshirts) than Californians do at 59º (puffers).

Create a theme-park capsule. I'll need some festive, hard-wearing, unfussy outfits for frequent trips to Disneyland and Universal Studios, both for date nights, and with out-of-town guests.

Create a new work-at-home uniform. Similar to the theme park capsule, this needs to be unfussy, easily washable, and hard-wearing, but a bit more artsy and creatively inspiring. This was also a goal last year, and I didn't quite manage it.

Keep my wardrobe roughly the same size. As of today, my spreadsheet shows 117 pieces (counting tops, bottoms, dresses, toppers, outerwear, athletic gear, scarves, belts, footwear, and bags). This is plenty. One-in, one-out is my friend.

My goals feel pretty specific this year, but do any of them resonate with you?
