I have fun with lipstick too...it seems like there are so many fun colors out there now. I bought myself a purple liquid lip for Christmas. You are strong to exercise self-control in not buying any more lipstick...I have probably about 15 (or more?) lipsticks now and wear them only once or twice a week. I would do well to follow your example!

La Pedestrienne--I like simple tattoos the best, too. They suit my aesthetic. I also like the IDEA of a watercolor tattoo but I worry it'll end up looking dated because it's so trendy right now, so it's not gonna happen. What I have planned right now is the words in my handwriting and a simple drawing my the artist. I'm probably going to go to the guy who did my best friend's bouquet of wildflowers, which she had me design for her and he kept the general look but tweaked it and it came out beautifully!

Violettt--I'll definitely check them out come spring. We have a lot of stores like that around here and I always forget to stop by until I'm between shopping phases (like I am right now). Also, I love A Moveable Feast. I read it for a summer reading assignment when I was in high school and still have my copy because it was really meaningful and moving to me.

Stylefan: I don't really like to wear much makeup either, but have you seen the eye palettes by Tarte? They are gorgeous~ And sure makes me want to wear a little eyeshadow~ I think investing in a good skincare regimen should be an important goal for all of us in 2018! I invested in Chanel skincare and Shiseido this year, and plan on replenishing each product when I run out, as I adore these lines, and love their beautiful packaging too. I particularly love Chanel toners, and the Benefiance Wrinkle Resist line by Shiseido. Creamy great smelling cleansing foam, and their cream is probably my favorite, out of 100 I've tried throughout the years. it's called Bio-Performance, Advanced Super Revitalizing Cream, if anyone's interested.
Kaelyn: Around February, TJMaxx will start getting in reasonably
priced linen items, perfect for your trip to Spain. Make sure you read some Hemingway before you go~"The Movable Feast", in particular.
Le Pedestrienne: My father told me, a tattoo of a beautiful long stemmed rose will be a hanging garden when you're old....hahaha

Ooh, I love talking about tattoos. My oldest ink is about to turn eight years old -- which is remarkable to me. It's been a few years since I've gotten one, and I've been daydreaming recently too. I have a list a mile long, but the next one will most likely involve a classic children's book reference -- either Finn Family Moomintroll or The Dragons of Blueland.

I think the trick to not regretting tattoos is to find an artist whose style you really like, and whom you trust, and not worry too too much about the content/image. If the tattoo is meant to mark a specific moment/rite of passage, you'll always remember the moment even if the tattoo isn't a literal or even metaphoric representation of that moment. Oh, and clean simple lines age better IMHO.

Rachy, you're going to have to think orthogonally if you want a baker's tattoo. Bakers are so covered in tattoos you'll have to poke fun at that through yours. Maybe a big old stand mixer on your bicep? I'm more of a classicist -- I'd probably go with a vintage-looking sheaf of wheat, like you'd find on an old French floursack. (In fact, I may steal that idea for myself someday...)

Ha! rachylou, your comment really made me smile. There must be some way to make bread cool, but I'm entirely too sleepy to figure it out at the moment.

This is really great. I also have to rethink my summer wardrobe. Lol, I moved two miles and with our microclimates, it’s changed everything. In my head, I’m punk, but I don’t at all want to put on a dress and a pair of combat boots. That’s too easy.

I also like to think about what tattoo I’d get, if I would ever get one. I also wouldn’t want it to be any old thing or a copy of someone else’s cool tattoo. But it has to be cool. I always think something to do with bread baking, but *like* a loaf of bread is just not cool. ‘What’s that blob on your arm?’ Lol

Thanks for the words of encouragement, everyone! I'm glad this post has been inspiring to some of you, and I hope you all set and meet some great goals, too.

Gigi--Yes, I relate so much to what you said about makeup! I barely wore it for a long time, and now I like to, but if I'm not feeling it, I'll skip it without a second thought. Unusual colors are great. I like finding eye palettes that have a good mix of neutrals and fun colors, and I have fun with lipstick (though I don't wear it very often, so I'm just plain not allowed to buy more right now).

Bijou--No crazier than anyone else going for a black belt! I think it's really cool. Good for you.

dakotacheryl--That dress is gorgeous! Probably out of my budget right now, but it can't hurt to look, right? I will when I get an opportunity. Thanks so much for the recommendation.

I know the brand is expensive, but have you looked at Elizabeth Suzann? My most favorite 2017 purchases are from her and she has great neutrals. The linen pieces would be perfect for Spain.

I love the dress shown below, the linen is a nice heavy weight that doesn't turn into a wrinkled mess...and so breezy and cool in summer heat.

Kaelyn you have achieved so much this year, bravo. Your style goals sound perfect and really resonate with me. In relation to health and fitness goals I find for me that having a project to work towards really helps. I do karate and working towards the next belt helps me stay fit and eat better. It is slightly mad, a Mum in her 40’s wanting to get her black belt, but hey, why not?

It was exciting to read about all the progress you made this past year...you've been hard at work building your wardrobe and style, and it must feel good to be able to pinpoint specific successes. I should do that myself. :)

I didn't wear makeup for years, and then I went and got a consult and bought some basics. It cost me around $100, I think. Like you, I found it difficult to spend the money, but now I actually view makeup as another component of style (though I still go without it frequently) and enjoy creating differnet makeup looks.

However, having fun with makeup can certainly lead to a lot of makeup purchases that get used only rarely. (I especially like unusual colors of makeup, so it's easy to go off the deep end when I see a new color I like.) So it is kind of funny that now I have to restrain myself from purchasing makeup, when before, I didn't want to buy any at all!

SarahD8, I guess what led to having zero regretted purchases this year was being pretty strict about my shopping plans. I knew exactly what I wanted and bought those things, plus a couple pleasant surprises (like these olive green boots). Some of the exact items weren't planned, but I knew generally what I needed (for example, needing to replace my thoroughly worn and well loved Converse, and ending up getting a red pair this time instead of another black pair). I think I'm getting better at understanding what is generally going to be available each season and what is going to be hard to find again. I can always find certain styles of jeans, but the red checked skinnies I bought last year had to be bought RIGHT THEN. My only major impulse buy this year was my embroidered faux leather jacket, and I went for it because it fit the style I'm going for right now perfectly. I'm planning on continuing this strategy for next year. I may end up regretting some summer purchases down the road because it's a difficult season for me to shop for, but I think that as long as I don't panic buy, I'll come out pretty well again.

And YAY for desk cycling! I don't have the equipment for it, but I'd like to try it someday.

I especially like your self-care goals. I am coming to think that is an underappreciated but essential aspect of style. I am also looking to move my body more (I am literally typing this post while DeskCycling!) and hope to get it more toned. I also want to take better care of my skin, which I'm super lackadaisical about.

fashiontern--thanks so much! I hate that plus size folks have been expected to look and dress a certain way, so I do my best to NOT comply. We're individuals, gosh darnit! For Spain, I'll be mostly in Madrid but I'm planning on going on weekend trips to other cities. I haven't nailed down those plans yet. As for finds, yes, I will absolutely include info about where I got them (for the things I remember). I try to do that whenever I have to make custom finds.

Meredith--that's a great idea about planning an activity that'd be better at a slightly higher level of fitness but is doable now. I'll think about that while I'm planning my trip.

Sterling--makeup was a hard one because I've been so unwilling to invest in it previously. I got $80 worth this year, and it was hard to go through with it at the time, but it was so worth it.

I really enjoyed reading your evaluation of progress and goals and it’s great that you’re integrating self-care and fitness into the reflection process. It’s all related, isn’t it? I’m most impressed that you don’t have a single purchase regret from last year. Thats amazing! And not that you are soliciting fitness advice, but you mentioned hiking boots so I’m going to throw this out there: the best thing my husband and I have ever done for our overall health was to plan an active vacation that we knew we COULD do at our current fitness levels but would be a lot more enjoyable if we improved our fitness. This approach completely worked for us because there was a clear incentive other than a number on the scale. Just a thought to consider; obviously fitness is very personal. Finally, I’m excited to hear more about your upcoming trip to Spain. It is one of my favorite places to visit!

This is one of the first of your posts that I’ve read. I’m glad I did!

I hope you will post outfits. I like the way you’ve described your style. It seems to me that plus-sized people are so often stereotyped into a certain nonstyle, and what you’ve described here goes directly against it. Fabulous! Your consistency in adhering to that style shows through in your “best purchases”. I think they could all be worn together easily.

High five on cutting out sugary drinks! I realized a few years ago that I was drinking far too much soda pop; cutting back helped me feel much better, and dropped a couple inches off my waist. Your reasoning about body goals is the kind that’s likely to bring success. Unfortunately, I can also relate to you on the backsliding.

What part of Spain will you be in, and what dress code do you expect? A friend in inland Grenada says it gets beastly hot for half the year, though I think it cools down at night. Footwear purchased there would be a super souvenir, one you’d see and touch regularly.

For cataloging your clothes, do you need photos of you wearing them? I’d think you could use hanger pix. For anything that’s still available, please find a way to include purchasing info, even though there isn’t a place (yet—I hope Greg will add one) for a url.

Violettt--ha, no, I don't think you're crazy at all. It sounds like you're having a lot of fun with all of this, and that's great!

Suz--I need to figure out how I'm going to get a good background, too. My bedroom walls are a neutral (except for one wall that's red), but it doesn't get a lot of natural light. Sometimes I can get good pictures, sometimes I can't.

Sara--I find them really helpful, too. It's interesting to me how everyone approaches goals differently and even if someone has completely different goals from what I need, reading something about their thought process usually helps me work on my own.

Great list! I love reading these type of posts. I'm not organized at all about my wardrobe and I find I can learn a lot from reading posts like this. Somehow my closet has ended up in a good place, but it's not been through carefully organized and thought out lists.

I like that idea - doing it capsule by capsule. I now have a white place I can use as a backdrop (my walls are not neutral anywhere in the house!) so that will help...

Bet it looks so cute on you!
I was just getting ready for bed and, thanks to your post, thinking, "hummm what were my favorite purchases of 2017"? I know! They were 5 fabulous Michael Kors bags.....(2 of which are backpacks, one fur/sheepskin backpack and one beautiful lizard print leather), one gorgeous burgundy velvet chain bag, which I will pull out soon, and 2 beautiful other bags!,(adore them), a Kate Spade watch I adore which says "I need a vacation" love love it, my motto, lol as I've traveled much in my life, and a gorgeous Brighton silver thick embellished cuff bracelet, wear it daily it seems! Can't think of any clothes purchases, you can tell I'm an accessory gal~. I would like to in 2018 buy another Chanel sweater or jacket, at my favorite consignment store, and stop shopping so much on an impulsive whim, but plan out my purchases much better! I also bought about 10 other handbags this year! You're probably thinking: Violettt is nuts~lol

Violettt, the journal sounds like a great idea! I hope it works out well for you. I've heard about the fires out there--so scary. I think it's good to only have things you love in general, but that's a very good reason to work toward that goal for sure.

As for the jacket, here's a picture from Torrid, where I got it. I usually wear it open, and it goes with a heck of a lot!

Hi Kaelyn! I'm really so impressed with your well documented list, especially the "best finds of 2017" and things you've bought. You know I'm such a shop-alcoholic, that I can't even think of one thing right at this moment that is my best purchase of 2017! Will have to think about it further, and add it here. I just love your post! I did begin keeping in a notebook, every time I bought something and where, and how much, but I have so many notebooks, I can't even find it now. This year, I'm going to get a journal, just for my purchases, and I think, what I've given away! And keep much better track of it. I know I want to downsize a lot! And re-shift my wardrobe, now that I'm newly out of the work force! lol Also, being that there are so many fires here in California, I need to have a paired down closet only keeping things I LOVE, in case I have to get out quickly! I've been panic stricken lately since all the fires, thinking I'd have NO idea what to pack!!!! Pretty sad really. I hope to get very organized this 2018! Thank you for your great post and inspiration. It's funny you want to get more punk in 2018, I want to get more "classic". We're all so different! Yet stylish~ Can you take a picture of your rose embroidered faux leather jacket? I'd love to see it! (I'm going to put some thought into my best purchases of 2017)........

Your list looks well thought out and detailed enough to be useful. I would like to join you and Suz in getting my entire wardrobe into finds. That will also help in using the Random Outfit Generator more often. It is full of inspiration if you feel in a rut or in the mood for something different
