I understand what you say here, it took me quite some time to really commit to that idea and start seeking out ethical makers. It was difficult because I didn’t know where to start. The interesting thing is that there are a lot more than we realise. They are often small and independent makers, some are quite pricey but others more affordable. If I can help let me know:). I have really enjoyed taking a more considered and mindful approach to my wardrobe and shopping xxx

Hi Deborah (great to see you here)

One of my aims for the year was to seek out specifically ethical brands (i.e., high rating) and buy a couple of garments. This I didn't do - I guess I was too lazy to branch out of my comfort zone

Also for the last 2 years I've tried to avoid the worst rating shops from the ethical fashion guide the D rating ones. But I bought 2 jumpsuits from Valley girl which I'm pretty sure is a D rating shop.

I've been following you on instagram recently (thought I'm pretty new to it and how to use it) and am fairly sure you have provided links o some ethical brands - which I intended to go back and look at (thus the mention in the thread above)

I am loving the high waisted look but haven’t ventured there yet myself! I really admire your discipline and focus Anne :). Can I ask, what has stopped you from buying ethically? I remember you talking about it and given I’m on a similar journey I am interested to hear your thoughts. xxx

Thanks Angie - I'm quite keen on the idea of blue glasses!

Interesting Jenni - we have TEAR here in Australia too and I wonder if that's how I got the book as we get their mailouts - and mine is hard copy. I understand completely as I'm the same with buying things.

Hi Anne, I try to use that Baptist World Aid Australia ethical guide also. It has been modified for NZ by our aid organisation called TEAR Fund. Of course we have heaps of your Aussie companies as well, you being our bigger neighbour. I have it as an E-book on my phone.
But not all companies are on it. And sometimes I just really want something ( eg nightwear and underwear , and I had a voucher, from Ezibuy) from a not perfectly ethical company. And some of the most ethical , like Kowtow from NZ, are so costly I cannot bring myself to do it. I am just trying my best within reason and not beating myself up. I would tend towards over-buying than under so YLF PPP principles have been great. I like your plans.
And the old pic is so pretty!

Thanks Angie! Interesting suggestion re specs - I have replaced them since that original pair I bought with your help, but the replacement was VERY similar to the old one. I get one free pair a year so I can look for another one. Do you have any initial suggestions for updated colours or styles?

Sal - yes we do like some of the same things - I think maybe because we are both in that "athletic hourglass" category we discussed awhile ago

I like your goals Anne. I think a new hairstyle will be fun and I like the direction you are going. I think high waisted will be really good - if you get the right ones which I know is not always easy. While we have quite different body shapes (I am taller and broader and short waisted) I somehow think we suit some of the same things which I am not quite sure why.... dresses, skirts and the high waist crops. And I think we both find jeans a struggle to find.

For all those who want to see where I'm heading with hair - I'm working on showing you an old photo that is what I'm aiming at. It is 8 years old, and hard to put up here.

In theory my priority for ethical purchases is reasonably paid labour. I don't restrict myself to Australian made. However what I actually used as a short cut is the Baptist World Aid guide to ethical fashion, which addresses some other issues as well (which is great).

I do have some contacts both in RL and could get some from forum member Deb for ethical companies - I just need to do the work and see what they have. A few years ago when I looked I couldn't find much that I liked.

Ethical buying is a really complex subject, but the great thing is that we all can do a little piece or two. Thrifting, buying fewer pieces, buying from transparent manufacturers, etc. My revelation last year was learning about live-plucking for the millions of down jackets I see everywhere, so I decided not to buy any more down (I have three down coats!) and also to tell everyone I knew about the practice. Someone focusing on woman owned companies or perhaps micro-businesses is another awesome choice. We can choose our niche and really make a difference.

New hairstyle sounds like a fun project! I hope you share some pics. Like kkards, I’ve found that buying ethically is a challenge. I’ll be curious how you define that, whether organic fabric, locally produced, well-paid labor, etc. Tops are a challenge for me, too. I finally managed to purchase enough last year, but it certainly increased my total count. Good luck with figuring out what to add in that category.

anne...buy ethically, its so hard to do, becuase at least for me, its so hard to define....so i've reframed this....for me, i've been aiming to buy more from companies founded by and managed by women, buy more from companies that manufactor in countries that have good track records with worker pay and safety, and to see that as much as i can of what i remove from my closet gets reused.

I'm impressed, you really know what you need and are very good at sticking to your goals.

In relation to workout wear, I like Uniqlo's AIRism t-shirts and so you may want to have a look at them because at $14.90 they are good value for a basic moisture wicking workout top. I find it very hard to get excited by gear purchases, and put the majority of my gear budget into the footwear as opposed to fashionable gear. That is because I wear my gear to the gym and come home and take it off - so it needs to be functional rather than attractive.

I’m with you on the high waisted pants! Works great on my long torso too. I am hoping to replace some low-rise jeans with high rises this year.

Hi, I don't think (or can't find) much on goals from last year, but I did mention that 2018 was going to be a (for me) big replacement year https://youlookfab.com/welookf.....a-big-year

In term of goals (includes ones I remember and didn't write down, in that post any anyway)

Buy ethically This is a contested and complicated goal. It didn't really happen. I wanted to buy at least items from definitely ethical companies - and I didn't. I even bought 2 items from a shop I'd decided not to patronise (it had a very low rating from the ethical guide I use). I did buy one skirt from the opshop though

Move to lighter colours - this happened with my silver pleated skirt - but I bought a black dress when I hadn't planned to

Buy 2 statement items - I bought 4! Tartan dress, silver pleated skirt and the 2 playsuits. These led from my desire to be both more emotionally led with my purchasing and also (bit like Suz perhaps) to try and get excited about what is actually in shops, rather than abstract ideas (or ones I get from YLF since they are from a different hemisphere)

Buy work clothes that can be work casually as well. Tick. All new additions work for both.

Buy a Cue dress - this didn't happen. I need them to be reduced by 50% for that to happen, and I wasn't as intosheath dresses (which I love Cue for) And I'd want to love it enough to wear once a week for a few years!

Although I planned this to be a big replacement year I only bought 18 items (not counting socks, hose or knickers) I thought some shoes would wear out but none did (or maybe I just have my head in the sand about running shoe replacements). Actually 20 new purchases a year is my nominal limit so I did get close.

I received (my choice though) a wallet as a gift, and also winter PJs.

I got quite a few handed down items in 2018 and at least 3 are definite keepers with some others in "still trying out" mode.

The BIG change for me in 2018 was the move towards highwaisted. With my long torso, this is good for me and I bought the first pair of work trousers for years (wide crops)

Plans for 2019

ETA I forgot the biggest one - change my hairstyle and go a lot shorter - my hair is in terrible condition and needs a MASSIVE chop.

Wear all the new clothes I bought a lot!! It felt like a lot of new stuff - almost overwhelming (the lowish number is because I didn't replace shoes or basics)

1. Keep milking the highwaisted thing - definitely get some highwaisted jeans and get tops to go with them

2. Just get more tops in general - I only bought 2 last year (and one workout top) That's just not enough!

3 Buy a light coloured denim jacket - I'm moving on from ideas of getting a blue pleather jacket towards this - part of my general change towards light colours. I'm a bit sick of having pleather jackets falling to bits after a few years.

4. Keep trying to buy more ethical stuff

Shopping list (non exhaustive)

denim jacket
High waisted jeans
Tops
replace any shoes that need it (I anticipate summer sandals for summer 19/20)

Left over from last years list
tracksuit pants
long sleeve tee
sweatshirt dress

Thanks for reading and comments welcome.
