Staysfit, this is GREAT. You have a clear picture of where you want to go, and I'm sure you'll get there. I love your adjectives, your mid-tone wardrobe, and your grey hair and specs.

I do think though, that some unworn clothes hold great meaning when they are very sentimental.

Staysfit - thank you. I enjoyed reading your thoughts. I had missed your new years post last year and I found myself nodding along with it. I like the word "meaningful" in relationship to wardrobe and I would not have thought of that myself, although the imperative has been driving a lot of my decisions. Not only making sure that pieces fulfill their usefulness but they have "meaning" without the context of our personal styles. Pieces that have resonance, that reinforce and enhance self are innately meaningful and of course, should make us feel wonderful. I have spent this year rebuilding my conference/event/formal capsule. I need to concentrate this year on support pieces for my work capsule and broadening my weekend/leisure capsule. I too have a strict color palate and that is the most helpful choice in limiting and making good choices for me. I also understand how movement intrigues you. Until I began buying EF, I had no idea that clothing could be designed to be best enjoyed in movement and that fabrics could be luscious to wear. In the same way, I've appreciated quality tailoring since I have chosen to focus on better quality pieces. The feeling of putting on a jacket that sits totally plumb, like it was tailored to your body, fits and moves. Well what is more empowering and meaningful. Thank you. You've given me much to ponder in both your posts. Enjoy the start of 2018 and I look forward to seeing where your fashion journey takes you!!

Great analysis of goals!

I am still probably not settled enough on style descriptors to form a basis, but one lesson for me from the past year is to keep focused on occasion/ role-driven capsules so I feel good about dressing for each event. That may include not only dressiness/appropriateness but also physical and emotional aspects and body shape concerns I might have— That for me fits in with the “ meaningful” approach.

I love your approach, and the addition of "meaningful" -- I've been feeling this way too, very drawn towards adding "things" to my life with greater intention. I'm better about it with housewares and jewelry, which I perceive as lifelong acquisitions, much harder for me to approach clothing this way, as it feels so fleeting...

Also, I LOVE your description of fluid, ocean-like movement; this is so far removed from my personal style goals (structured, sturdy, clean lines, high contrast), but it is so immediate and tangible that I'm utterly entranced!

I think I shall enjoy thinking about this: meaningful clothing

It’s funny... I struggle with the word meaningful a bit. ‘A meaningful life.’ ‘What is the meaning of life?’ There's something about the phrase that makes me wonder if it’s grammatically possible to ask this... lol. But the way you put it makes sense to me: ‘Is there a point to this item being in my closet?’

When I consider how much you have learned and how quickly you have put it all into action, I'm amazed. I can only imagine that tracking will add another layer of refinement to your already impressive clarity about your style!

I agree that clothes that are not worn are meaningless. (Except the ones we keep around for sentimental reasons, I guess.) I see what Bijou is saying about how tracking wears might encourage one to wear something that one does not really want to wear -- but when that feeling arises, it's usually a pretty good indication that the item is no longer "meaningful" and should be donated. So tracking (or the knowledge that one is tracking) can still be useful in that way.

I'm going to try to join you with tracking if I can. I'm being a bit cagey on this because I need to find a very simple way to do it or it will not happen in the next few months, and I may actually need some start up energy to get it going, so I may not begin until the spring. But either way, I will be interested in what you learn.

Good luck with your wardrobe tracking. I have been doing it for about two years and need to take breaks occasionally because it can become tedious. Like any other for of detailed tracking (calories, clothing wears, # of shopping trips) it can be so worth it because it shows you what is really going on, which is so often different from our perceptions! You might also try that trick of putting everything for one season into a holding zone and then seeing what you pull out and want to wear, but with a big wardrobe you might not have the space to do it.

Jenni NZ, I use both Genuine Composed and Serene Elegance. Genuine Composed came first. I understand what it means but whenever I tried to make use of it here on the forum it seemed to confuse people, so I came up with Serene Elegance which accomplishes the exact same thing in my mind. I am able to use them interchangeably. It isn’t new. I came up with it a couple years ago and it stuck. You started following the forum after my major closet transformation, however, I completely rebuilt my wardrobe, pretty much from scratch, because I moved from an autumn to a light summer color palette. It’s a long story....however, I absolutely did cut my wardrobe spending by 80% between 2016 and 2017.

Bijou, your point about the undue influence of wardrobe tracking on what I may chose to wear is interesting and something I hadn’t considered. I am not sure if it will be a factor for me. I have developed strong wardrobe preferences and tend to wear only items I love. My problem is I have a large full closet, possibly masking items that I am not wearing. I make use of holding zones now, and see that as a useful tool in addition to tracking.
Your dress is lovely, and exactly to sort of item I mean! The finds below are the pieces I added to my wardrobe this year which had the quality of movement. The movement may be subtle, like the ruffle of a tulip hem skirt, or the loose edge of a top, or it can be the billowing of a shift dress. In any case, each of these items were successful and made me happy.

Style Fan, I hope you post your goals. Happy New Year!

Staysfit, I like the idea of having "meaningful" as a goal and I will definitely use your post as inspiration for setting my 2018 goals. Personally tracking wears does not appeal to me, as it seems as though I may be influenced to wear things I would prefer not to, just to justify keeping them. I prefer using a holding zone and purging after a couple of months of not wearing something.

I recently bought this summer dress (because where I live we have long, hot summers) and the way it moves when I walk is really lovely. It feels cool to have it billowing around my legs in the summer breeze. I wore it last night for New Year's Eve.

For 2018, I am adding the word “ Meaningful” to my previous goal words from 2017 - “Mindfulness and Moderation”. The intention of the word is to help keep my focus on the importance of relationships, experiences, connections, and to keep me from wasting time on things that are low priority. I expect clothing to have a practical purpose other than hanging in the closet. if clothes go unused, they are meaningless. I suspect my wardrobe contains more clothing than I currently wear. I cannot confirm nor refute this because I have never successfully tracked my daily wears . Tracking my wardrobe would enable meaningful assessment of my clothing use. Wardrobe tracking will not be easy for me. I plan to use a calendar and will hand write the components of my outfits. I can make a spreadsheet and collate the information once a month. I may try taking outfit pics as well.

My plan for last year worked. I liked it. I have been happy with my style. The small changes I plan to make in 2018 do not seem to need any alteration in my style moniker - Serene Elegance. I am still thinking of what to do with my adjectives. Soft, calm, fresh, classic, polished, light. I started to add some elements of movement to the items I purchased at the end of 2017. I loved the effect. My new clothes flow like the waves of a gentle calm ocean. I want to continue to add items that have the quality of movement. I also want to add some texture to my wardrobe without adding anything overly heavy, bulky, or chunky.

My 2017 post contains the Mindfulness and Moderation plan, which I also plan to continue: https://youlookfab.com/welookf.....ses-frames

Happy New Year everyone!
