What a successful 2017! Thanks for sharing the recap and your 2018 goals. I really enjoy your wardrobe and outfits. I really like the idea of adding 5 pieces per season. It seems a good way to refresh one's wardrobe and be current, while keeping the essential you the same. Have you been doing this for awhile? What do you find easy/hard about it?

This is an amazing look back/look ahead, Jenn. So inspiring to me! I love how straightforward and organized it is, and I love some of the specific details you mentioned (very interesting to read about brands that work, new brands to you, etc.). I've been in a style rut and I need to organize my thoughts .... and your review is going to be my model. It made me see, more than anything, how important it is to look back before planning ahead. The wheels are already turning for me.

Specifically, I want to echo Suz's comment that your purchasing may feel high (especially given that 5-piece plan) but given your movement into high quality purchasing, I think it's inevitable.

Good luck with your goals - and thanks again!

Jenn, I have enjoyed reading and thinking about your goals. Looking at style through the lense of others really helps me to stop and study my own. Clearly, your well defined goals are working for you! I especially like your last goal:
NEW! Update my wardrobe with more "pretty" items, including florals, lace, and silk. These make me happy.
IMO having a happiness factor in every outfit means starting the day with internal warmth and an external smile ( the best accessory there is)!

Adding the pretty will mesh well with your existing backdrop of great boots, sweaters and bottoms. It seems a bit easier to find in spring.

I also share your goals of hair/makeup and upgrading workout clothes. I somehow don't worry about what I look like at the gym because I'm such a mess once I start sweating. But I think cute gear might be much more motivating than DH's stretched out T's and my 10 year old bike shorts.

Thanks for sharing these. It was seeing everyone post tgoals over the last month that finally got me to do it.

shevia, our shopping methods are SO different, I could probably learn from you. You benefit so much from being open to the great finds that just seem to come to you!

Anne and SarahD8, I'm not always that trusting and I definitely do keep duplicates/replacements in my closet together with the originals for a season or so. If you do give the older things up eventually, though, things start to even out. It's just an ongoing process.

Style Fan, I wear a lot of dresses in summer, so that makes that easier. It's really easy to just default to black in winter. i know it'll match!

Janet, that's funny, because I'm more emotional in other areas of my life. I'm probably more analytical about my wardrobe than about my business, sadly.

JAileen, that poncho is actually a really great example of organized emotional shopping. I added it (at full price) to my 2016 NAS order, and it ended up being the only thing I kept. I loved the quality of the weave and fiber and it filled a need I had for a lightweight, low-volume topper for travel, as well as for chilly Colorado mornings and evenings. At this point, I've worn it more than 20 times, which I think is great for a year and a half into a pricy statement piece!

Your approach to your wardrobe is wonderfully analytic. Although I am an analytical person, I haven't been that way with respect to my wardrobe. I need to learn to do this. I also like the additions you've made this year, even copying you with the poncho!

I can practice those things in other areas of my life, but I fear that my wardrobe is a different story -- or at least, even though it's well-organized, I don't have a ton of discipline around it. It was inspiring to read your goals and thoughts.

Great post Jenn. Year-end review and goal setting posts are so very helpful for me. I found myself nodding along to many of your points. I also struggle with finding non-black bottoms and would love to find some dark brown or olive ones. Where are they? I had some success with my summer wardrobe but not with my winter one.

I like the idea of using natural make up. I will look into some of the brands suggested here.

Jenn, I wonder if there's also an element of being able to trust in the replacements. I know that I often rationalize purchases as replacements for various things, but then I tend to put the new item in my wardrobe without actually removing the old one (this can happen regardless of whether the new item is replacing something that is worn, upgrading an item, or taking my style in a different direction). If you are not following an explicit one in-one out system to force yourself to cut the cord, as it were, you must simply have some element of trust in your choices (I mean both the decision to purchase and the actual physical item) that I find hard to muster. Thanks, you've given me a lot to think about.

Your outfits this year have been outstanding and your clear and considered plan is a joy to read. I am not much of a planner or a wardrobe organizer but you have inspired me to wonder if I should be!

(breaking my responses up, because I lost my first batch and now am paranoid)

lisap, I always feel a kinship with you. :)

Angie, so sweet! Thinking about wardrobe building is definitely a favorite hobby for me. I look forward to the parts of the year when I have time to think and plan for the upcoming season.

Violettt, a journal sounds like a great way to start! I keep track of my purchases in a special notebook section, and I also use it record purchase ideas. Sometimes, they still seem like a great idea when I come back to them, and sometimes, not so much.

Fashintern, definitely start a new thread about the weight fluctuations, because it's something many, many of us have dealt with. My weight has been stable for a few years now, but when it wasn't, my solution was to buy pieces that could accommodate some fluctuation, make sure I had clothes comfortable at my current size, and simply to buy less.

Thank you, runcarla! Cognac has become a signature.

Christina, I love how everyone comes to this forum from a different place and with different needs. I could learn from your whimsical, playful wardrobe.

Sal, I like the column of color look too, but I feel like black has become too easy of a fallback for me. Right now, I have one pair of black pants, along with black jeans, a black skirt, and black leggings...not to mention the dark denim. I just need to remind myself that variety makes for more outfit possibilities!

deb, nyah, not better, just different. Everyone's needs and goals are unique!

smittie, your wardrobe building has been an inspiration to me. So wise to note that you need to allow space for mistakes. I read an interview with the CEO of Netflix recently where he said that, over the past few years, they've had an extremely high hit rate with their original content...and that wasn't necessarily a good thing. His goal was to bring down the percentage of successes because he felt like it meant they weren't taking enough risks to have real, breakout hits. Also... I have a lot of thoughts on the activewear options right now, but that's for another thread. :)

Thanks, Emily. And I have to say, I'm glad to have another careful purchaser around!

SarahD8, that is interesting, isn't it? I wish I knew the secret. I suspect it mostly comes from really thinking through the role a new item will play in my wardrobe, what hole it's filling, and what it might be replacing.

So many wonderful, thoughtful responses!

LP, "sturdy basics" are exactly what I need for my WFH uniform! Thanks for the 100% Pure recommendation. I'll definitely check them out.

Suz, I might have given the wrong impression when I said I'd like to buy less next year, but I am pretty satisfied with the 30 purchases. That fits nicely within my expectation/goal of 20-30% churn per year.

Meredith, a subscription box is a great idea. I hate buying full size versions of items that don't end up working out.

Sterling, I don't feel like a great sustainability role model, but thank you! Baby steps here.

Lisa P, I hope this doesn’t offend you, and Jenn, I hope you don’t mind a detour from the thread, but Lisa, can you tell a little bit about how you deal with that? With weight fluctuations in wardrobe planning? That’s a stumbling block I frequently run into. I don’t want to plan for failure with my body goals, but I don’t want to just throw up my hands and do nothing until I’m “there”. You’ve been at this much longer than I, so probably have worked out a way to deal with that. Or should I make a new post with that topic?

Jenn: I am so impressed with you and people who can be so calculating and organized about their wardrobes and their purchasing habits! WOW~ I am so not like this, but have to learn to become more like you in this way! I am such a shop-aholic and impulsive purchaser, always have been, that my clothes are waaay too plentiful. This is my goal for 2018, is to be much more organized. And exercise much more restraint when buying something, just because it's fabulous. Do I need this? I have to start asking. Will it work for my lifestyle? I bought a journal recently to start recording my wardrobe finds/discards/organization. Excited to begin it. I've had no will power when shopping. End of this. I'm learning. I find what has helped me somewhat is thinking if I went away/travelled/moved for 6 months, (not taking the weather into consideration) and I had one hour to pack, what would I take????? That list would show me my favorite things I think. I have so much to discard, both in my closet and my life, old habits to get rid of, new ones to start doing. Thank you so much for your post~

PS: In your pictures, I really like those brown shoes, nice color and style. I don't care for those clunky boots that everyone is wearing nowadays at all. Very un-feminine, so are most ankle booties. They are plain ugly, IMO, unless you get very nice feminine ones with a pointy heel.
