Ipr200, the phone App took some thought. I considered using several including Mint, Personal Capital, and You Need a Budget. In the end, I constructed my own spreadsheet and loaded it onto the Sheets application of my cell phone so I can easily access it. I did this because I already use Quickbooks for my business and Quicken for my household expenses. I only wanted something to track of the moment cash expenses, and to break down my credit card charges. The spread sheet will do the trick. I created only 4 categories which were of personal interest to me, one of which was clothing. The columns and rows add so I get monthly categorical and ongoing categorical totals plus an overal total. The pre-existing App's do more than I need and would take more time than I want to spend to "jot" down an expenditure.

This has been a really interesting post. My challenges are a bit different.

I want to reduce the time I spend online looking at clothing and increase the time shopping at the stores where I am successful. I spend hours a week looking online without buying anything, but I haven't wanted to spend the time to drive out of county to the stores that work for me.

I'm loving this whole thread -- lots of great ideas!

Staysfit -- I really like your "Genuine Composed" descriptors. It makes sense to me to use descriptors that set functional parameters that matter to you without locking you into a particular archetype ("gamine" "bombshell" etc) or set of cultural associations ("urban" "boho" etc). I like that the point is not to conjure a specific image and then create outfits that satisfy that image, but to analyze any given item and consider whether it satisfies these specific criteria. Room to move, room to succeed.

I'm trying to let go of, or at least not belabour, a lot of the "archetypal" monikers that others might use to describe me (tomboy, sporty, gamine, etc) and move towards a set of descriptors (I'm using "Structured Simplicity" for now) that may seem less outwardly descriptive, but is more effective for evaluating individual items while shopping/planning. I don't need to hold up a shirt and ask myself "Is this gamine enough?" but I do need to ask myself "Is this structured enough? Is this simple enough?" I can see how Genuine/Composed and Serene/Elegant would serve the same purpose for you.

Staysfit, this is so insightful and wonderful to read. You have given so much thought to your goals and defined them in a way that fits who you are, and will make it super easy to know if you are succeeding. That's half the battle! I especially love the idea of enjoying what you have more and focusing less on the hunt. I am setting a similar goal for myself :-). This is one I'll come back to again and again.

Xtabay, I admit that Genuine Composed is a strange sounding Style Statement. It makes perfect sense to me though. There was a point last year when there was an interesting discussion about Style Statements and how they can sound more helpful then they turn out to be in practical Daily use. My two statements help me practically. Genuine reminds me that whatever I wear, I need to connect with the people around me. It's important that I not look off putting because I have my personality to overcome, and I have been told by multiple people that they felt intimidated by me when they first met me, until they got to know me well. I know I need to offset that intimidating factor with something that looks soft, genuine, fun, and warm. Composed is both my professional and natural character. I am organized, confident and composed, and my look portrays that as well. It's the balance to Genuine, maybe the complement? I'm not sure if it makes sense to anyone else, but it makes sense to me, and I can tell when I look at what I am wearing if it is Genuine Composed or not. I think the terms Serene Elegance do something similar. They may be easier for other people to understand.

Shedev, I have followed and admired your 5 item system, and gave some thought as to whether it would be suitable for my needs. In the future, I may choose something similar, although I may pick a different number of items to add per season cycle. I wanted to see what I end up purchasing with the limits I have imposed with my budget and guidelines. My assumption is it will end up being similar to your experience, where I will think carefully about my purchases and then truly enjoy each one after I make them.

Staysfit and Suz, glad the idea of a Just Looking-type list (or Rejected items list) resonated. For me, it helps to remember that I often look at new things and get excited by the possibility of them. Sometimes it is helpful to look back at the list, and remember how excited I got - by the idea of espadrilles, for example - and realise that I already have plenty of summer shoes. I wouldn't have been thinking that while gazing at cute yellow espadrilles!

For me, starting a shopping reduction plan was as much about getting to enjoy my purchases as it was budget. I just wanted to back off the hunt for more a bit. Knowing that I am only buying one or two pairs of jeans for the season has steered me toward buying the one I really want, even when it is the expensive version.
My shopping year started in September. This year, I instituted a budget that will mean I only spend 2/3 of what I did last year. I'm looking at coming in significantly under for my winter 5. I feel pretty good about where I'm at with my style. I am considering these shoes in Navy, but after that I'm calling it a season.

Rachy, my initial closet pruning was done in the typical manner, by sorting through and purging items that didn't fit, were out of date, worn out or unworn for an extended period, etc. My second round of pruning was based on my color palette. I eliminated items that washed me out and made me look blah. My third round of pruning used the Kondo method. In retrospect, I should have gone directly to Kondo and skipped the first two. My 2017 plan limits purchases and prunes my budget. I suppose the secondary benefit will eventually be a smaller wardrobe. If you want faster results, I think Kondo works. You have to be honest in the application of her technique though. Any cheating defeats its benefits.

Sterling, I think you nailed it! We're both ready for whatever comes our way! Happy New Year!

Janet, I look forward to hearing your thoughts and any plans you may have for halting closet churn!

This is a good plan. I think articulating your style and having a wardrobe plan is tremendous on the judicious shopping front. I have a much more functional wardrobe now, many less cute but wayward purchases. You have inspired me to see if I can apply this to reducing the amount of clothes I have. I've reduced a lot, but still have room to prune (or lack there of).

Mindfulness. Check.

Style Descriptors. Weak. They just don't come easily to me. I struggle and then I go get a pint of ice cream.

Color Palette. Check.

Budget. Everything counts except running or trail shoes. If I wear it, it is deemed a Clothing Expense.

Purchase key fashionable statement pieces for Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter. This will be the real challenge for me. But it is a worthy goal because it will help me address my sales shopping compulsion.

Maintain essentials. Check.

Shopping Parameters. Questions I will pose to myself, "Can I wear it today?" "Do I already own something similar?" "Why are I considering duplicating something I already own? "Do I need to purchase coordinating pieces to make it work?" Additional I will impose a Purchasing Fast starting February 1, 2017. Still working out what that Purchasing Fast will mean to me. It will most likely mean NOT shopping sales for one full year. It will also mean that I will have to actively face my FOMO by NOT shopping NAS, Pre-Christmas Sales, Post-Christmas Sales.

Record Expenses. Check. I record charge and online expenses in IBank. Cash expenditures are captured in a spreadsheet.

Yearly Budget. I doubled my annual budget for the upcoming year. This is a complimentary strategy to help me address my sales shopping compulsion. My budget is an annual thing. I can spend it in one month or throughout the year. There is no monthly budget for me. An annual budget works better for me than a monthly budget, but everyone is different.

Deterrents. Sales. This is my achilles heel. I have placed a moratorium on sales .... sales in stores and sales on the internet. I will enforce my moratorium by implementing a Purchasing Fast in February; Substituting people-oriented activities for solitary shopping; Travel. I should note that travel has not necessarily helped me not spend money. I usually feel compelled to buy new outfits for each trip.

2017 Goals. My professional work capsule has suffered as a consequence of casualization (which I fully embraced to my detriment). I'm working my way back to a professional work capsule that is suitable for my work place, my lifestyle, and my climate. I owe Angie a huge THANKS for the climate thing. It took me years to understand that I was shopping for an imaginary climate. It was only in 2016 with the help of Angie and Suz that I started to grasp the concept.

Glasses. I plan on buying one new pair of glasses in 2017. I know exactly what I want ... which makes finding them challenging. I will look throughout the year.

YOUR PLAN IS WELL THOUGHT OUT AND VIABLE. I look forward to going through 2017 with you and other Forum Members. Happy New Year.

Secret squirrel, I agree with Suz, that it would be very interesting to create a "just looking" list, but that might become very cumbersome and long given how much I look at. For my purposes, it might be better to create a list of items I considered purchasing but decided against, along with the specific reasons for rejection listed next to it. The "rejected purchases" list is also going to be long, but it is probably shorter than my "just looking" list!

This is a very interesting plan.
I would like to reduce but more to pint, to really fill gaps and occasion- soecific( even if versatile for more than one occasion/ role).
Instead, since I often don't find what I need/ want, I buy something else instead.

Wow. I am just floored by the insights in this post. As a recovering alcoholic, I totally got the potato chips thing. For me, obviously it's booze instead of potato chips LOL. However, it still holds true for me that I cannot eat just one potato chip.

I have found that I have used potato chips (or cookies) and shopping as my "fix" at times over the years since I've been sober. In the early years, there was a lot of justifying going on in my head: "I experience far less negative consequences from the cookies and new shoes than I ever did from the booze". While technically true, it ignores the fact that I've had to buy bigger clothes because I've eaten my feelings a little too often, and I've spent a fortune on blisters and ankle braces due to foot issues caused by improperly thought out shie purchases. Oops :-/

Since we've made the move toward more intentional and eco-friendly living, I've had less closet space and less money; so I've had to cut back on the kettle cooked jalapeño chips, and I've had to institute a "one in, one out rule" for shopping. There was a lot of rationalizations in the beginning, but I have slowly gotten to a point where I can't think of anything to get rid of at the moment unless a spectacular piece is going to take its place.

I've got a list of a few pieces that I truly believe would be wonderful additions to my wardrobe this year. I've added specific examples I'm looking at to my "considering" part of my finds for accountability, and I'm setting a limit of one example of each type of garment. I'm hoping I can stick to just adding those pieces because the money I would usually spend on shopping could go towards nicer finishes and details for our small house we're getting ready to build. It would also be good to save some of it to help us make it through the winter, when DH and I both experience a slowdown in our work.

All that to say: I'm with you. I get it. And you can do this. I can do this. Together, we can do this. Thank you for sharing this. It has reminded me that I am not alone in my struggle, and it has reminded me that I need to be mindful because that is the life we are striving to live.

Happy New Year, Staysfit, and may 2017 be an easier year for you than 2016. I so admire your positive attitude in the face of personal losses and professional challenges. And practicing mindfulness sounds like a wonderful goal. I have always found mindfulness with movement more within my own abilities than meditation (except for very short spurts) and I must acknowledge I have not been practicing my yoga of late. I want to reincorporate into my life.

As for your shopping goals, I think you are going to be successful. You have a great deal going for you. First, your can-do attitude. Next, your back-up strategies. Finally, a terrific wardrobe going in. It is not as if you have a lot of wardrobe significant holes that you really want to fill. Not shopping in that circumstance is much harder.

Also, I'll bet the longer you practice this the easier it will get. Other things will simply be top of mind, and/or you will find other fun ways to play with fashion that don't involve money.

I've been using Notes to track my yearly purchases and "retired" items. But I don't keep track of the costs that way. I might try Secret Squirrel's addition of the costs simply on the note (it's easy to add up, after all) and I really like the idea of a separate note or section for each month (I've just been listing as purchased without the time). I also love the idea of noting the items that "caught my eye" or that I longed for briefly yet did not buy (or perhaps sent back, LOL.) Thanks for those tips, Secret Squirrel.

I'm more of a "moderator" by temperament and seem to be one of those annoying people who can eat 5 chips and then leave them alone. On the other hand, bans and imposed restrictions of any kind make me very rebellious and then I go crazy! So it is important for me to leave my options open within some rough parameters; if I impose a ban on myself, that's exactly the time I will go nuts and buy up a storm! ;)

Joy, I agree that designating the money to something else I value is important. My DH and I have come up with a list of compelling things which I can easily prioritize and value more than clothing. I love the suggestion thinking about what items can be edited out, and what can I use instead? I think the question of what can I wear instead is going to be a key helper as I review my potential purchases.

Harmonica, Mindfulness is a form of distraction here. I was also thinking of it as a good tool in general for someone, anyone really, who has the types of intense character traits I have. I expect it will help in other parts of my life, not only with shopping. My work is stressful. I have some chronic health concerns. Mindfulness has good science to support its helpfulness for these issues. I do Yoga and Pilates, which I think of as Mindfulness with movement. I think it will be good to be still with Mindfulness also.

JAileen, an 80% budget cut is huge but I suspect it Is still a generous enough amount. My DH and I looked at general guidelines for how people budget for clothes and then decided on the number for my budget. I would love it to be doubled, and maybe it will be. It's still negotiable once we see how much progress we make towards our prioritized goals.

Carter, Your questions are thought provoking and excellent! My 2017 plan definitely calls for a reduction of daily internet shopping and weekly purchases. Instead, I will be limiting my browsing to once a week with a time limit, and the shopping will be focused, not random browsing. I am not sure yet if most of my purchases will be seasonal or not. I tend to get something if I like it, so it depends when there are items available that I like. (It seems like availability shifts seasonally, so that may make it appear like I have made more purchases in that pattern, but in reality, I have been browsing online daily, and purchasing whenever I feel like it.)

My plan essentially calls for a reduction in the quantity of purchases I make, not necessarily in the price point of the items I purchase. I am looking for gems. My closet is full and I don't need it to become overloaded. I will continue my purchases of beautiful bags, dresses, shoes and whatever else. It will just be in moderation. Instead of 10 beautiful expensive dresses, I will pick the best 2.

Happy New Year Staysfit! This was a great read. I will need to go back and reread it again to fully absorb it. Mindfulness is a good New Year's Resolution. I like how you articulate your 2017 Style Plan. It has given me some ideas on how to write out mine.

Thank you for sharing your plan, Staysfit (and happy new year). I read this with much interest and will need to come back to take it all in, because it sounds like we are very similar! Your thought processes sound familiar. I also will need to reduce my spending this year and up my saving.

I have logged spend on my Android phone this year - I never used a specific app, but just used the notes function. Only if helpful to mention, as I think you have this much more figured out than me, I have logged my daily purchases that were outside my budget/not reclaimable like this, each month:

1 December: magazine, takeaway coffee
2 December : walking boots (sale)
3 December: earrings

etc etc, so could see at a glance what I had been buying. It also helped me track what I was spending cash on.
I also had some success with noting down in a running list what had caught my eye but I didn't buy. I called it the 'Just looking' list, and reviewing it reminds me of all the things I enjoyed looking at this year, but were a whim -or similar to what I already had. I like looking at nice clothes, shoes and jewellery and I don't want to stop doing that, I just need to not buy it! The Just looking list looked a bit like :

Frilly red handbag
Yellow espadrilles
Chunky rings

etc etc.

Thanks again for sharing your plans, I look forward to hearing how you get on.

Very interesting! I hope you'll keep us posted on your progress. Based solely on the purchases you post, it seems that you tend to shop in only a handful of significant spurts each year rather than dribs and drabs each month. (Or maybe my perception is incorrect?) Do you think your monthly budgeting plan will force that to change? Or will you save up for seasonal shops?

Another question. You have exquisite taste, particularly in handbags and dresses;-). Will your plan be to limit the numbers of bags/dresses while still buying your usual quality, or will you try to find more moderate versions?

There is no need to answer these questions here, I just thought I'd throw them out there because your answers may be the exact opposite of my own thoughts for my 2017 plan in progress. I tend to be a steady stream shopper and generally seek more moderately priced/sale items. For 2017, I'm thinking my budget may decrease somewhat, but I'd like to shop a bit more seasonally (with a plan), buy far fewer items, and feel free to spend on items that sing to me. All of which feels a bit like your previous M.O.;-)

Happy New Year, Staysfit! You have really thought this through and I wish you all the best! I'll come back and read more carefully later because there are so much to learn. Mindfulness is a big part of my everyday life and I love how you want to engage in that as a «distracton». This all or nothing is very interesting. I see that for me some things are easily done in moderation (cookies, candy) and others not (shopping, potato chips).

Wishing you much sucess with your plan. My best success comes when I designate the money that I would hsve spent on clothing for something else that I value. It also helps if I ask myself when considering something what piece or two pieces am I willing to edit out if I buy iy, also to think " if I don't have this, what do I have that I could wear instead?" Usually something comes to mind that would make me just as happy..
