I appreciate your feedback Angie. With that, and having read the other essentials posts, I think I have a better understanding of "wardrobe essentials". Here is my revised list:

Accessories
1. Dainty small face watch - I have two. These help to coordinate my jewelry. If I wear mixed metals, I pick the watch with a mixed gold and silver band; otherwise I wear a solid silver tone watch.
2. Dainty Bangles - solid, thin, silver, gold or a mix of both depending on jewelry choice for the day. I have separate Statement Bangles. I ALWAYS wear Bangles.
3. Classic stud or hoop earrings, (diamond or pearl, gold or silver).
4. Wedding band and diamond ring.

Clothing:
1. Solid, neutral, fitted pencil sheath dress in grey, light navy, soft white and light teal. The dress should have a high neckline, best is a crew neck but boatneck, turtle, and cowl are acceptable. Sleeveless is also preferred. Dress can have some draping but must be solid, and fitted, with waist definition, Fabric should be natural material such as wool, cotton, silk or linen depending on the season.
2. Denim pencil skirts - I have two of them and they cross seasons.
3. High neckline, fluid top in natural fibers. In winter time these include pullover cashmere and merino wool sweaters in grey, winter white, light navy and light teal. Necklines are primarily turtlenecks and crew necks with an occasional boatneck. There is no cable or embellishment on the sweaters. They are very plain and simple and serve as backdrops for Statement jewelry or scarves, or they can be used under a Statement jacket. In the warmer months this includes grey crew neck tee shirts and blue, grey and soft white collarless blouses.
4. Long Cardigan Sweater - solid color, natural material, neutral color - grey, blue, white. I like the way these flutter when I move.
5. Jeans - My preferred Jean is full length in winter, maybe cropped or not in summer, and has a mid to high rise, a straight or skinny leg, and no tears or distressing. I like light and medium indigo, grey and white.

Outerwear:
1. Down puffer - I have multiple but I wear one outside 6 months of the year. Colors are primarily grey, or chocolate. I'm phasing out the chocolate. I pick the length and thickness appropriate to the temperature. This includes my down vests.

Footwear:
1. Weatherproof boots and booties in the winter - Colors include navy, and grey./ weatherproof shoes in summer - metallic silver, white, grey, navy
2. Sandals in summer - primarily Naot and Birkenstock, colors include metallic, white, light navy and grey.
3. Aasics gel Nimbus - these are my running shoes. I wear them daily, and they sometimes become part of an outfit if my feet are feeling finicky.

Make-up:
1. Lip gloss
2. Mascara and eyeliner
(These are the essentials, I can get by without anything else in my makeup bag.)

Staysfit, you are on the right track FOR SURE. Well done.

A few thoughts:

your specs are statement pieces - not essentials

I think your wrap dresses and many of your pencil skirts are statement pieces too.

Most of your leather jackets are statement pieces if I remember correctly - isolate the items in the category that are essentials.

Nice addition of the make-up.

*Please post your list in the comment's section of the blog post.

Great list. I am struggling with mine. Not sure where to put certain items.

I could do gear very easily.

Lisap, I love your list! I didn't include any gear in my list and love that you did. The Fitbit and Aasics Gel Nimbus (I wear the same running shoes) almost made my list of essentials because they are the part of my gear capsule that crosses into my everyday wear. Thinking about my gear essentials list would be an interesting exercise!

With regards to your dresses, I see it as the fitted sheath with or without draping or print as an essential. Some of them are statement pieces because of the print, but this is an essential as a category for you - if I understand this whole concept correctly. Within each essential , there will be statements. In my case, a blazer is an essential, and a blazer in a wacky colour is a statement within that essential category. Blahblahblah

Suz, Here are some statement dresses. There is one solid Statement dress here, but I see that as one of the exceptions. I thinks it's clear that this is a statement piece because of the sheen, the draping which is more detailed than on my other draped dresses, and it has a polished look (IMO).

Staysfit - you are a model of organization and are concise, too. I too like the idea of including accessories and makeup: very logical.

My list is a work-in -progress, because I want my essential core to change. Here's what I hope for:

Accessories - Fitbit or watch, diamond and gold studs, a ring. Leather bag, and a silk square scarf. Sunglasses - Classic black Wayfarers or gold framed aviators. Footwear: block heeled sandals, leather sneakers, Birks. Would like to introduce a summer weight /colour bootie this year.
Makeup: lipstick, eyebrow makeup, mascara, liner, bronzer, foundation, perfume.

Spring/summer tops: silk or poly tanks in neutral colours with some design element like a bias cut, back contrast zipper , maybe a drapey peplum or layers. Cotton wide crew or v-neck t's in neutrals . Thin drapey cotton only. Button front silky sleeveless or cap-sleeved blouses. (haven't quite worked out this last one yet though )

S/S bottoms; jeans (slim bf's or relaxed skinnies, crops and kick flares) ,classic slouchy khakis in army green , and leggings. Denim or khaki relaxed fit shorts.

Other S/S: tailored blazer, army jacket, denim jacket, sack dresses, denim shirt dresses . Possibly include leather jacket.

Activewear: two-layered running or cycling shorts, capri workout tights , tank, sports bra, nylon zip-up jacket. Two pair of Asics Gel Nimbus.

Why does this list feel too long?

Suz, I struggled with how to do this across seasons. I agree that my categories may be too broad. When I look in my closet, it seems to me that most everything solid is in an essential piece whereas anything with a pattern probably is not. I normally wouldn't think of pattern as the essential quality for a statement piece, but I wonder if that may be the case in my wardrobe? For example, I have solid grey, blue and even a fuschia sheath dress that I would call essential. Then I have my Ted Baker London floral sheath dress, or my Tracy Reese color splash sheath dress which I think of as Statements. The same is true among my blouses, with the essentials being solid and the statements having a pattern.

Love that you included make-up in your list! And your items make sense to me, considering your WIWs. I am not sure if the categories are too broad. I could have said something similar (high neckline fluid tops in various fabrics) and it would have covered everything in my closet -- I chose ink/navy and white because those are the staples and "background" where others might be closer to statements. But quite honestly, usually they are not. So I'm not sure!

I wrote a post on my essentials and they were cross seasonal.

2017 Essentials: Here are mine, what are yours?

Accessories:
1: Dainty small face watches - I have two and pick which one to wear based on whether I am mixing metals or not.
2. Dainty Bangles - I always wear some. ALWAYS!
3. Classic stud (diamond/pearl) or simple hoop earrings.
4. My light teal glasses! My new sky blue and tortoise sun glasses!
5. My wedding band, diamond ring(s).

Clothing:
1. Pencil skirts/ pencil sheath dresses in solid colors or solid neutral tone.
2. High neckline fluid tops in soft natural fibers. This could mean a cashmere turtleneck in winter, or a silk/cotton blouse in summer. I prefer collarless blouses, solids and well defined color palette.
3. Cardigan Sweaters - any length, but mostly long. I like how they create a flowy element when I wear anything else more structured under them.
4. Jeans, preferably mid to high rise full length straight leg or skinny, although I also have trendy styles.
5. Wrap dresses worn over slip dress - I love this look and probably wear it once or twice a week, year round.

Outerwear:
1. Down puffer - I own these in multiple weights and styles. I wear them October to April.
2. Leather Jacket/suede jacket - good for dry days only or indoors
3. Light weight trench

Footwear:
1. Weatherproof footwear - this means snow and salt resistant, water proof, etc. We get lots of weather of every sort here and shoes are easy to ruin. Navy, grey, metallic silver and white.
2. Sandals - Naot and Birkenstocks, I live in these all summer. I have lots of other footwear, but these are always my favorites.

Make-up:
1. I love to have lip gloss in a great color with me at all times.
2. Mascara and eyeliner
