Thanks Sally- two Sally's from NZ is funny as I don't come across many people with my name!! I consider I do need to be more groomed now and am endeavoring to make more effort.

Thanks Smittie, that is a great idea. I have bought some white crop skinnies and will share some pics once I have worn them in a few different ways. I can wear white pants on many days but I would feel silly in Amal's outfit watching my son play rugby!! I agree with your ideas - I have been wanting a winter white knit sweater for a while, and also a bold striped sweater. I mostly just paint my toe nails...but am experimenting with finger nails this summer.

Thanks for your support Elizabeth, BettyCrocker, Cerinda and Angie!!

Aida - I do agree. I am okay with black looks but they can look drab on me if I am not careful. I don't like optic white near my face but do enjoy winter white and ivory. Both Joy and yourself have shown some great light winter looks that I will refer to.

BethAnn- thank you! I have been trying to increase blue, and I can wear warmer butter type yellows - even mustard. I don't suit lemon yellow. And yellow and grey is a great combination....

Thanks LisaP - I agree, I am part way there. I need to keep it up and just have consistency. And I think I can still be elegant in jeans and sneakers, or flat boots....It is just keeping this in mind when buying so I don't veer too off track.

I love those looks too Bijou (show us a WIW in winter) and there are not many winter days here that a dress, coat, tights and boots are not warm enough. And I am okay about buying pieces with longevity, that is my goal for 90% of my closet.

LOL Rachy and Helen - I knew what you meant!

Thanks Deborah, I am pleased that you see me that way. I have to be honest and say that there are outfits I wear that I would not post to YLF - not many - but I want to keep adding pieces that are consistent with elegance. There are some pieces in your closet that I would happily steal however I doubt they would fit me!!

Thanks Summer - that is it exactly!!

Simple elegance, clean lines plus a little drama from bold colour.

Thank you all. I have a pinterest board but I am going to refine it to this direction.

Sally I appreciate how you are able to so concisely articulate your style goals. Not sure I have much to contribute but I do think you have a natural elegance. I'm always envious of how fab your hair looks au natural. It helps to create that effortless chic vibe. You know that beautifully put together look but not so "perfect" that it can look contrived. I am looking forward to seeing the 2016 leg of your style journey x

Living in Australia, we get mild winters too. I find I do wear winter dresses quite regularly. I like to wear mine with higher shaft boots and tights. When it is cooler, I add a dressy coat or my Burberry trench as a topper. (I bought the Burberry 10 years ago, and it is still going strong. It was expensive, but if you can ever bear to pay so much for one item, I would recommend it given it is a classic design.) I have cognac boots that work well with my winter dresses and given my hair colour is similar to yours, they bookend well with my hair.

You have made a great plan, Sally, and I think you're already on your way! I am craving a long sleeved midi dress, too, although I'm not even seen one in my price range to try. I think I might try to create the illusion of one with a two piece dress (skirt and top).

All of your pins look like a natural outgrowth of your current look, and I could see them working well for you. Brava! I often find myself pinning things that are simply unpractical for me.

As for color, your certainly look lovely in blue, and I think a touch of yellow might be both cheery and bold in the spring and summer months, and can pick up grey and burgundy in the fall and winter.

Sally your summer outfits are bold and colorful and often high contrast, so certainly look for those qualities in winter wear. A thought about transitioning your "summer look" to winter: since you have a lot of skin showing, you may need to incorporate MORE light colors in your winter wear to get a similar effect of "lightness".

If you're down to 4 sweaters, I would make sweaters a top priority, along with the outerwear!

In your inspiration pics, I see a lot of white and lightness. Perhaps you could purchase a few white/ivory pieces for your winter wardrobe. White goes so well with colour, and it's definitely bold, even though it's a neutral.

I would love to see you in white flares with a boot that has a bit of a platform/heel, as well as white skinnies and high cognac boots. I would love to see you in a dramatic, heavyweight scarf. I would love to see more cuffs and bangles. I would love to see you in some New Zealand woolens of course! A few bold prints would be fun.

When I think 'elegant' I do think 'clean lines' and 'simple boldness' so I think you're on the right track there.

I like your goal of improving grooming. Moisturizing my hands and keeping my nails all the same length is about as far as I go for hand-maintenance so you are quite beyond me in this area.

I was intrigued because you not only have the same name as me but also live in NZ. I think your pieces are keeping in with a simple elegance and you have the height to carry them off. They all look good on you.
I know what you mean about paying attention to the polished aspects or the finishing touches. I can no longer get away with bed hair, i feel undressed without makeup and feel i need to paint my toe nails now I'm over 40.
You almost need a checklist to develop the habit. I get my eyebrows done when i do my hair as the places are close. Some of my colleagues have nail appointments booked. If scarves and jewellery are more on hand, you might remember to wear it or if you organise your outfit the night before with jewelry included, it might help you to include it more often. Just ideas because i also find it hard to remember the details to complete a polished look.

Thanks Deb and Caro!

TorontoGirl I am pleased my direction is clear! I hope I can stick to it.

Thanks Maneera- you have polish in your style, and I think we suit similar silhouettes. Brooklyn, Janet, Angie and yourself are my bootleg and flares inspiration.

Joy - thanks! I have added a couple of recent pics which I think show where I am trying to go. I agree some of Janet's looks could work on me too.

Shevia- yes the casual arty beachy vibe can need tweaking as we mature. I am lazy and read a book rather than apply makeup sometimes! To me you do not look scruffy!

Brooklyn- I agree with you. I do have two clutches and am trying to wear more jewelry. I love Amal's style- don't mind her husband either!!

Thanks Sarah- I find summer much easier than winter so I could use your help there.

Great post Sally. I admire your thoughtfulness.

I understand that desire to look more polished. I feel that way too, for the same reasons as Shevia. I could definitely see you rocking that Amal style look (perhaps in more practical colours!).

Imposing my own style preferences on you, I would like to see you wear more jewellery! I think you wear cuffs really well. Also, do you have any clutches? I have become a big fan of them in the last year or 2. I think a clutch can add instant elegance to an outfit or function as that "bold" piece that you like. I use mine for going out (including running errands). You just toss in your wallet, phone, keys and lipstick and you are good to go. (I don't use them for work as I tend to carry more stuff then.) And they don't have to be expensive.

Oh, and I agree with Caro that the quality of items from ASOS is quite variable. But keep in mind that they do sell non-ASOS brands. For example, you might score a nice coat from ASOS that is made by Whistles or Gestuz, if you keep an eye out. They have great sales.

Very interesting post. I definitely relate to the part of adding more polish because what I might have gotten away with at a younger stage as natural has begun to (or perhaps I have begun to notice) look scruffy. Elegance is hard to pin down, but you seem to know it when you see it!

I think your goals are doable. I see drama and would like to see you use the strong colors, large stripes and architectual shapes of your inspirational pieces. You have the height and presence to pull off these looks. Your inspiration outfits remind me a bit of something member Janet might wear beautifully. I can see you in her long jackets and flare pants, striking jewelry and a touch of arty.

You seem to have a good handle on the direction you want your style to go, Sally. Good job!

I love your summer dresses and think that a winter version would be an excellent idea. However, I just want to point out....I love dresses a lot in summer but don't feel like wearing them as often in winter. We have mild winters too, but wearing a dress in winter requires too many 'extras' - a warm base layer, warm leggings, a coat that looks good over the dress. But that said - a dress with tall boots is certainly an easy way to look elegant. On the other hand, I find myself wearing a lot more skirts in winters. You can simply wear a thermal top plus sweater on the top and can easily wear the look with jackets. And the final look is just as great with tall boots.

I think bootcuts/flares will look awesome on you. Hope you find the right pair!

Thanks Sara, I feel clearer on where I am heading too!

TexStyle, I checked out Claudia's looks, I can see what you mean. She wears classic with flair or glam, and we probably share similar shapes too I think. I will check her out further.

Thanks Aida for the detailed analysis. I agree - I should be looking now for knitwear in colours that will see me through most of the winter. While I have high summer and coldest winter items, most of my wardrobe is pretty trans-seasonal. And I was thinking a lined trench might be a good option for me- I love your cream one.

Rachylou - I like that. I am not a frilly, fussy, flouncy person but I like some floatiness or flutter. And I love the long line too!!

Caro - thanks. I have also not done Kibbe analysis but think I would be in the classics or naturals somewhere. I have added two things from ASOS but the fabrics were cheap. I have been thinking of looking at the US sales now but have trepidation about doing so. I could wear 5 (probably untucked top) often - I would just pick my days!! February to June is normally pretty dry here for example.

I have to be careful to blend this look with my lifestyle - for example the white dress and the white pants/jumpsuit look are not really work from home/rugby sideline/engineering office looks!! The striped dress and flared jeans would both fit in much more easily. But it is the bold clean long elegant line that are not too uptight that I love.

Agreeing with Aida I see modern classic (which = elegance) with a touch of boho (which = everyday/relaxed).

ASOS had some nice modern classic coats last year, the only trouble is a lot of their fabrics feel really cheap imo, their return policy is really good though.

I'd love to see you in an outfit like #5 but it doesn't seem practical for wet weather. A winter version of the more structured dress in #4 would be great with long boots

What I notice about the pics is a long vehicle line and a certain absence of flounce - although a little flutter is good... I'm thinking 'go long' on tops...

Sounds like you've got a great idea of where you're headed for 2016! I like the idea of adding a little more polish to your grooming but still keeping some of your boho/beachy vibe.

As someone who lives in a place that has loads and loads of "wet and bleak" weather, I can tell you that there are two kinds of coats I reach for on those days (I have quite a few coats!): The first is a cheerful lined water-resistant trench (mine is cream, would love to add a colorful one), and the second is a lighter weight wool coat in a longer length (mid-thigh); peacoats are nice, but I don't particularly like them when it's wet because they don't protect enough of me from the rain!

Finding colorful winter pieces can be a challenge, and it can be tough not resorting to those dark and gloomy neutrals when looking for "bolder" pieces since SO MANY of them are black or dark. If your winters are mild, I would suggest looking at transitional retail periods (pre-fall and pre-spring) because the weights are often nice for mild weather, and there is also usually a good amount of color. I made the mistake of simply settling for many gloomy shades the past two f/w shopping periods and am feeling equally gloomy because of it. Definitely going to be stubborn about ensuring that I add more color next season.

(PS looove that dress in #3!)
