Oh wow, you are so good - this is the sort of thing I start with enthusiasm and then quickly forget about doing :(

It's great that this is helping guide your purchases, and I am sure it helps you keep a balance in your wardrobe, so you are not always purchasing the fun things, but the more needful things.

Oh wow apart from undies I bought no other clothing nor footwear in 2014 or 2015 three tops and one pair of boots plus blazer this year I think I earned a little treat after going so long without shopping

Wow, Deb, I have never done something amazing like this, and it may be that I don't want to see what numbers show up on my list!

I do think I have slowed down my purchases, but I do still go in spurts, on occasion. For example, last autumn I bought the same pair of riding pants in three colors (honey nut, navy and black) and I'm glad I did, because I wear them all the time and they can move from season to season.

Hearing that you'll be retired soon is exciting news and please savor that first morning of leisure when you wake up and see the sunrise.

I am away without my list but think it was 23 items in the end. This does not include lingerie, jewellery or gear. It includes bags, glasses, footwear and clothing. It is almost exactly the same as the previous year. I think about half are replacements and half additions. I have added three dresses and tried to add new pants rather than tops. I have tried to buy a few statement items, and keep a variety of silhouettes in rotation.

My wardrobe is in a good place and over the busy summer season I have had a variety of party options. I don't have a 100 percent success rate- one pair of trousers had quality issues, my tunic vest I am ambivalent to.

It sounds as though many have purchased less items but are in a happy place- thanks to YLF

I just went through my lists for 2013, 2014, and 2015. I buy a lot of footwear! I need to slow down as I rarely retire anything, although a few pairs are showing signs of age. Actually, I rarely retire ANYTHING.

I bought 45, 47, and 47 items per year above, but I don't count underwear, hosiery, gear, or jewelry. I keep saying I need to slow down, but I've already ordered five items that will arrive in the next week or two. :( I'm cold/it's unusually cold out, so I ordered two turtlenecks but I don't need two teal ones so at least one will go back.

Last year, I bought a fair amount of hot weather clothing and sandals which worked out because I was in my late mom's clime all summer, but since I run cold and my home is in a cooler area, I really don't need any more. I know I'll be tempted to buy sleeveless items because I've been working out with weights to get Michelle Obama arms by this summer. . .

What a careful inventory, Deb. Good for you! It seems as if you are reducing purchases in a sensible way. Your needs may change with retirement for sure.

I just did a count. I didn't include undies and PJs since I replace those yearly.

It looks as if I bought 47 items (including bags and scarves but not other accessories). I bought at least 66 items the previous year, so I'm also reducing purchases, though not as much as I thought. :)

I also retired 32 items this year. The numbers are not quite equal, which suggests I am not following a one-in-one-out principle precisely. I think that's okay, though. I am finally at the stage where I have a working wardrobe and I am now refining it for my exact needs -- this will be a slow evolutionary process of weeding things out and maybe bumping up categories that require more. I'm pretty confident that a moderate wardrobe is what's right for me and I am getting clearer on what that means, exactly, and what kind of rotation I can expect (due to wear, boredom, etc.)

My breakdown was very different from yours.

10 Footwear
9 trousers (this includes jeans and regular trousers)
2 skirts
10 tops
6 knitwear
4 dresses
2 toppers
3 scarves
1 bag

The footwear both surprised and didn't surprise me. I walk so much that I am hard on my shoes. And I like to rotate. Some of my favourite booties get little wear, however, so I need to reconsider this capsule. It's too cold and snowy to wear them for the winter -- yet my cold weather footwear is much more limited. Something for me to ponder. I think I need more options in snow-ready footwear.

Good for you for tracking so closely! I stopped tracking items mid-year because the order/return cycle was driving me nuts, but I did contine to track dollars. I spent half of what I did in 2014 as well. Honestly, I could have spent even less, but I had to buy some things to accommodate a very stubborn weight gain this Spring/Summer. Dress the body you have...even if you hope it's temporary, right? I have packed away the now-too-big S/S clothes for the next time menopause/injury throws me a curve. I also had a bit of a style shift going on as I adjusted my preferences for retirement. I remain very happy with these purchases (mostly made this Fall).

Good job done there Deb. I understand that things are in a bit of a state of flux whilst you figure out retirement clothing needs, so it's good that you haven't jumped the gun and bought stuff without realising what's really needed.

I have kept track over the last couple of years too. My difference though, is that I often buy fabric for clothes to be made up by me and I don't always make it up in the year that I buy it. I figure that it'll be the same situation each year though so I still count it as a purchase. My spending in 2015 though was down by £30GBP per month, so I'm pleased about that.

2015 was the second year I kept track of all clothing purchases. Spending wise, I spend half of what I did in 2014 And bought only 2 items in the last three months of the year. My move and life adjustment had a lot to do with that. I am still figuring out what clothing will suit my lifestyle when I retire in 2 weeks. Anyway, here is the breakdown and comparison of my 2015 purchases.
2015          2014
shoes     11           16
bags      2            0
tops      15           27
pants      7            7
jeans      2            7
coats      0            1
shorts      1            0
jackets      0            2
skirts      1            2
sweaters     4            13
hats       2            3
dresses     1            1
undies/night    8            3

How did all of you do?
