Fun thread!

Trends I enjoyed
. Ankle pants
. Faux and real leather
. Fluid fits
. Pointy-toed flats
. Riding boots with skinnies tucked in

Trends I did not care for
. Sporty luxe: I'm the least sporty person I know!
. Slip-on sneakers: too casual for my style
. Oversized and boxy fits: they overwhelm my small frame
. Flannel shirts: feel too "back forty" to me

Had to think about this. I rarely "hate" any trends, because there always seems to be someone who can make them look really good. But there are things I struggled with.

I loved:

Menswear. Anything that makes me feel that tough is fine by me.

The long overdue return of midi skirts, particularly the flared ones.

Ponchos. I have a gorgeous South American poncho, which comes out every autumn, and it's really fun that it's back in fashion again. Now I don't feel quite so lonely wearing it :)

Pointy ballet pumps. I finally found a ballet pump that suits my feet.

I struggled with

Boxy silhouettes. I really wanted it to work, but it's a disaster for a large bust.

Normcore. Not a good look for older women, but it won't keep me from trying :P

Large floppy hats. No use in the wind on a bicycle.

Long hair which appears to have been ironed flat. It is everywhere, and it only really works on people with really good hair. I've seen many women wearing this who would look so much better with a proper haircut IMO.

Fluid fits and pointy toes pretty much define my style right now. I am not sure I ever wore fitted tops, but I don't anymore. The most interesting specific trend item for me is culottes. They immediately appealed to me.

As far as clothing goes, winter (aka snow season) just started here for me and will be tested over the next 4 months.

That said hits so far have been:

relaxed skinnies

fluid fit tops

BF fits

sneakers for work and play

jeans' belts

semi-tucking

button-downs (mostly flannel)

drape front tops

monochromatic texture

mixing neutrals

The failures have been:

dramatic midi skirts -- even with a 34" inseam they don't look fab with flat shoes

sporty luxe -- just haven't found the right pieces --- being a bit on the tall and broad side doesn't help, athleta talls are too short, many "shrunken" bombers had to be sized up in, which killed the playful factor

slip-on sneakers - just didn't find the right pair, on my summer list for 2014

knitwear -- so far not batting a high average on this

ankle straps --- didn't find a comfortable enough pair

ankle pants --- willing to give it a go for my skirt impractical, no shorts, hot, casual workplace in 2015

menswear inspired coats -- loved the look, but not in the budget-- thinking a sleek duffle coat in black or navy for next winter

cognac -- didn't find "my boots" -- I'm hard to fit in today's non-lace-up, non-chelsea bootie styles, since I have slim ankles and a high instep, but a normal-width foot and a narrow heel

There was much to enjoy in 2014 for my closet and me:

- Fluid fiting tops and chunky sweaters. Especially loving tops with asymmetrical hems. I'm enjoying the longer lengths too.
- Pointy toed flats/ booties. My fussy feet surprisingly said "yes".
- Dark red items for fall/winter. I wear a lot of grey, and I really enjoyed the combo.
- Sporty luxe. I'm on my second pair of black track pants. For summer, the Athleta prima capris were a workhorse. And I love wearing "fashion sneakers" especially when its wet ouside, since the traction is better.

Trends that didn't get me: the semi-tuck, ankle length capris, short, blingy necklaces.

Hope 2015 is just as FAB!

Personal favourites:

Fluid, boxy, and even some oversize fits. Fab.

Knitwear bonanza

Pointy toed footwear

Sporty luxe

Semi-tuck

Plaid (mad for plaid!)

White out

Asymmetry (esp. hems on tops)

Snow boots as fashion (!!) (and other comfortable shoe styles)

unusual outfit juxtapositions (but I still need lessons in how to do this successfully)

Personal no-gos:

Birks

Real sneakers (i.e. not fashion sneakers) with dresses

hi-low hems on dresses

seasonally confused outfits

Trends I really wanted to sport but couldn't:

Slip on sneaks (couldn't find a pair that stayed on)

Culottes (didn't find my pair)

Moto jacket (still haven't found "my" moto)

Man coat (haven't found one/ can't justify purchase just yet)

Some of these trends are now a year or older, but choosing shapes or combos which work for me from each season and finding ways to carry them on is always a goal.

Not my cup of tea: mega-oversized fits, extreme pointy toe footwear, semi tuck, winter white (low contrast and darker colors preferred in my closet), sporty luxe (except for footwear), tall boots, cropped tops or cropped sweater over untucked shirt (though not bad with a regular length sweater), short skirts and dresses, culottes, flower prints, leggings, Birks, ripped jeans.

Right up my alley: oxfords, loafers, sneakers/Cons, fluid or somewhat boxier fits, rolled jeans and ankle cropped pants (agree with runcarla - have often had trouble finding PPL and this seems to mitigate), midi skirts, button up shirts as under-layers, leopard print (subdued accent), more neutrals.

Thanks for the thread. Fun to read everyone's responses and also helps my style outlook to gel a bit. I always lean towards the tomboy or androgynous and casual but want to stay firmly on the side of pretty and chic and feminine and it can be hard to maintain that balance.

This year I enjoyed slip-on sneakers, fluid fits, semi-tucking, plaid and some floral prints, and touches of sporty luxe. I'm thrilled to see pointy toes returning too.

Trends I couldn't get on board with (even despite an occasional try) included crop tops (even layered, I just didn't enjoy it on me), Birks (they don't fit me well and I don't like how they look), truly athletic shoes with regular outfits, especially skirts, and boxy/truly oversized fits.

Things that don't work for me or I haven't found the right items:
Boyfriend jeans, I love the look but they always seem to be too large around my rear end and thighs, if I go smaller then they just look more like a skinny jean.
Sporty Lux, I can't get my head around it. To me they are two separate things lol.
Hi Low hems , I simply don't like this look.
Cropped pants that hit mid calf, after joining YLF I realized that they were doing me no favors!
Cropped sweaters over untucked shirts

Things I like:
Ankle straps with heels
Ankle pants with heels
Semi tuck
White jeans in winter
Toggle Coats
Skinny jeans with boots
Long Cardigans
Fluid fits and longer tops although I find the right ones hard to find .

Worst for me:
pointy toes, because of foot and back issues;
cropped tops, because they just didn't work with non-transparent garments underneath;
running shoes with skirts, because with large feet and short calves, it looked truly awful.

What I've embraced:
ankle-length cardigan, love the silhouette, flattering and not overwhelming;
birk sandals, because of foot issues;
one boxy cashmere sweater, which is just flattering enough.

i generally loved most of the trends this year, but here are my thoughts

~fluid and oversized fits ---struggled with this at the beginning. being petite, i sometimes struggle to find the fine line between fluid and to big. but i think i'm getting there…overall i find this trend growing on me. not seeing a lot of it on the women in my city.
~pointy toe footwear---love.love.love.
~cropped pants --- i like this look, but i think a wear them longer than they are meant to be worn.
~winter white ---took me a while to get this one, but i love wearing white jeans in the snow. and i think i've finally found a pair of white pants i can wear to work this winter. again, i don't see this to much on the other women in my city. but i did notice this holiday that most mainstream stores had white jeans, so this maybe changing.
~sporty luxe---another trend i love. i haven't found a pair of sporty pants, but l love the slip on sneaker and fashion athletic sneaker look, and the fashion sweatshirt. i see this look on a lot of the college age women in my city, but not intentionally on many of the women of my age.
~booties of all shapes and colors ---another love. but on most of the women in my city i'm seeing taller boots, with skinnies tucked in.
~BF jeans---i'd say I'm partially in here. i'm wearing more relaxed skinnys than oversized BFs, but i'm loving the more relaxed look. again, i'd say this trend is slowly coming to my city, but i saw more in stores this holiday, so i think i'll see more women wearing them as 2015 rolls in.

a couple of trends that i haven't really tried or seen in my city
~midi skirts and dresses ---the maxi dress was still going strong here this summer. but the midi never seemed to hit here, and i haven't tried it.
~pastels--i bought a pastel pink sweater this year. i like it, but really thats the only pastel i have. and i haven't seen much around.

What worked:
-Pointy toed flats worked for me x 4 pair on 2014!
-rolled slim trousers (solved the problem of short inseams!)
-baby-boot cut/flared jeans great leg legthener
-white, tomatoe, and cognac...Angie's outfit combination set in motion a favourite combo that hasn't run it's course

What didn't work:
-the semi tuck, especially with a belt...between the rise of my pants, and my bit of a pouchie belly, I never got the look right
-booties with a skirt or dress...never found the right booties for the look, and my current shorter boots do not have the heel height to nail that trendy look
-oversized, draped, or flowy sweaters...just not my thing

On the fence:
-sporty luxury...love the idea, but I am committed to keep my gear for what it was intended...don't know if I would recognize the style interpreted in work appropriate wear, but would like to try.

I won't bash any trend because I've found myself hating something and after some time liking it... Also some people here may like it so I think it's kind of offensive to say those styles are "the worst of 2014".

Wording is really important.

I personally got tired of:
* The "mullet" skirts (multiple lengths). I fixed some of mine to make them one length all over.
* Heels with platforms like these http://http//s2.favim.com/orig.....300401.jpg.

And my best new findings of 2014 are:
* Crop tops.
* High waisted flowy skirts.
* Naot walking shoes, birkenstock style (but better IMO).
* Chunky shoes.
* Pointy toe shoes.
I don't really wear heels but these are my new idea of a chic heel:
* Strappy heels without platform, like these: http://www.herhautemess.com/wp.....218141.jpg

I think besides of those new findings, my style remained the same.

Best: Fluid fits and longer tops and the return of pants options beyond skinny. So glad to see bootcut and flare returning when last year they were almost impossible to find.

I don't think I have a worst, I just have things that I don't like for me: cropped tops, leggings, and ankle length pants.

What didn't work:
Most draped clothing, especially tops and dresses in thin knits. Not enough structure.
What I liked:
Ankle strap footwear with ankle pants, plaid, chunky knits if soft enough to collapse back on the body, semituck and asymmetric anything.
Still working on:
Sporty lux, fluid tops, Birkies or that style

Best (and most surprising): sporty luxe. I was shocked that it worked for me. But it did and now I'm forever in love with jogger pants, even as dressy trousers. I kept the overall look very dressy.

Worst: tennis shoes/oxfords with beautiful dresses. I just don't get it, and I couldn't even bring myself to really try it. It seems like the very thing I've been trying to undo after a lifetime of growing up in rural Midwest in the 1990s and early 2000s. And I don't know that I can do either shoe with any form of clothing. Just not my thing. But it also means back to hunting for some kind of faintly glam casual shoe to wear on day trips in mountain towns.

lisap, love your "biggest tug at my heart" category. But I am sorry you can't do pointy toes. It sounds like it's have your toes hurt or your heart hurt. Not fun!

Worst (for me to wear; I may admire on others)
--skirt/dress lengths well above the knee
--skirts with full-length zippers centered in the front
--skirts and jackets with multiple decorative zippers

Best
--slouchy fit trousers
--oversized sweaters, cardigans, capes
--slip on sneakers
--midi length skirts and dresses

I haven't tried on boyfriend jeans yet; I like how they look on others. I plan to try them out in 2015 and see if they work for me.

More thoughts.
Didn't work as well for me:
Sporty luxe, not my personality
Semi tuck, always felt a bit gimmicky IRL, too trying too hard as unfrumped said
BF jeans and rolled up jeans in general - they take a lot of work to look right for my figure, I think, and in general felt too fussy
Chunky knitwear, adds too much bulk

Worked well:
Slipper flats, this surprised me but the patterned pair I bought has gotten a lot of wear
Pointy toed flats, a nice update to my constantly worn ballet flats
Slip on sneakers, I bought a cheap pair and have worn them so much I plan to upgrade when I find the right pair
Looser fitting button front shirts, because they don't give out the office vibe as much as the fitted ones do
Jazzed up sweatshirts

Not sure if this is strictly a 2014 trend, but... I love chunky, textural sweaters with cables, roll- and turtlenecks etc.

I don't love the return of tapered legs (which means I also don't like rolled BF jeans).

Not good:

Pointy toes were worst for me, because I can actually fit in some of them, but they are foot-deforming so I have to tell myself to just let it go and not feel pressure to wear them. I have some slightly pointy low and higher pumps just for dressy occasions.

Semi-tuck was great for casual and for a lot of top-tucking issues, but never for work, and also I get a bit of sense of "trying too hard" in my circles, so again, had to identify where it belonged and not create outfits that required a semi-tuck to look right.

Cropped sweater over untucked shirt doesn't work that well for me, again only weekend wear is possible and I think the sweater length just hits wrong for me. So passed that up.

Loafers haven't been big that I've seen here, but I went big for them and made it my thing. Slip-on sneakers, though I haven't really updated this year, I love and hope stay around awhile. Same with oxfords, I may be the only person in town I"ve seen wearing them, and that's for 2 years now.Wearing pleated pants again in a few updated versions, and again not seeing that on others. These are "trends" I've just had to do on my own!

Fluid and slightly oversized top trend has been great. More fluid pants fit also great. BF jeans did not work for me in the early really baggy/slouchy versions, but slim BF types or modified straights are great and I hope to stay in some version.

Here are mine-only thing that I think was worst, Sportie luxe --not because of the "look", but simply, for me, it was just difficult to do-after a few tries, I just gave up. Another one that didn't really take off in my area is loafers.

Some of best -fluid tops, oversized cardis, and all the boots and booties, shoeties, that seem to be the predominate footwear this season. and I liked the Burkie look, and I hope it will be around again in the 2015 spring.
