Cheryl, being there is #1 and it sounds like you've already been given some good style advice and excellent dress links. I just went to a funeral two weeks ago and wore a black pencil skirt and striped dress shirt with low heels and a black trench coat. I agree that a muted print or black dress is a good basic and hope you find one that pleases you. p.s. I am so impressed with how some of you find the most appropriate links so quickly. How do you do it?

It's not the actual funeral, though, so I don't think you need to dress up too much. That said, I think this jacket reads VERY casual (is it fleece? it's hard to tell from the pics). If you have something other than jeans that might be good, too...although looking back at the photos it looks like maybe the pants aren't denim? In which case I think a slightly dressier blouse (rather than a tee) and a cardigan would be perfect if you can manage it!

Cheryl,

I agree with the others that this is too casual for a funeral.

There is a blog article here that I believe Angie wrote regarding proper funeral attire and it was so helpful.

Regarding Queen Mum's comment, we SHOULD have something in our closet to pull out for unexpected events, and look dressed for the occasion. However, I've learned in the past year, that the color black is NOT my color, so my little black dress can be any neutral, that works for my coloring.

Hope this helps.

Cheryl, so so sorry!

I agree with the others that it would be better to be a little more dressed up for this occasion, even if others are not.

Having said that, the MOST important thing is that you attend. No matter what you are wearing, it will be appreciated.

Here's another possible dress: http://www.landsend.com/pp/Kni.....038;sku_0=::ZTU&CM_MERCH=IDX_Women-_-DressesSkirts-_-Dresses&origin=index

This is the dress that Sona wore in purple the other day. You could layer it over a shirt or long sleeved T. It would be a great MOTG casual dress, too.

I agree with Mo & Kim. This is the kind of occasion to which you should wear a dress or skirt. Your outfit is cute enough for lots of occasions, but it's just too casual for this one. *hugs*

I have to agree with Kim. My last funeral was when I was 33 and I had to dress shop in a rush and then hop on a plane. I didn't have proper shoes and had to wear heeled sandals, in the rain.
Now, at almost 42, I have a few 'funeral ready' outfits in place just in case. It's not the kind of thing we want to think about or shop for, but at some point it is a logical capsule to have in the closet.

So here are 3 dresses I found from Nordsrom Rack, all under $50 that would be handy to have in your closet for the unexpected conservative event....

Cheryl- we are the same age and when my mother-in-law died almost 3 years ago and I was showing a friend my funeral dress options, she said to me "You know, we are at that age where we need to have a nice simple black dress in our closets."
While I realize your job and lifestyle are quite casual, it never hurts to have a simple black dress to pull our when an unexpected funeral (or dinner party for that matter) comes up. It doesn't have to be fancy or expensive, just simple and conservative.
FWIW, I found a black sheath dress at Dress Barn last spring for less than $40. I've only worn it once so far, and that wasn't even for a funeral, but I am glad to have it in my closet to pull out at a moment's notice.

Yes just the visitation. My closet is extremely casual. I don't own a blazer or a dress lol. I will see what else I can come up with. Thank you.

that looks a bit casual to me. You're talking the visitation, not the actual funeral right? I don't think you need to go with black if that is the case, but I'd go with something more smart casual. Do you have a more structured blazer that you can choose instead? A simple dress?

Two days in a row of different funeral visitations. I have two questions.

1. Is this too casual looking?
2. How do you feel about the pattern mixing, stripes and animal print?

Please excuse the lack of styling and no makeup, hair not done. Just trying to see if this will work or if I need to come up with something else.

Grey/Black Striped Top - Old Navy
Black Jacket - Classic Elements
Black Pants - Old Navy
Black Patent Mary Janes - Merona
