Thank you for all your comments! They're very helpful.

@ Everyone who suggested darker wash jeans: Yes, I have read Angie’s smart casual posts. That is why I have two pairs of plain dark wash jeans on my list of things to buy! I live in a really small town, so it’s difficult to find jeans that fit well AND are plain & dark. I’m going to do some shopping in a larger city this weekend, so I’ve got my fingers crossed.

@ queenie: I haven’t found heels that pass the “8 hour test” for me yet, and since I do a lot of walking I need comfortable shoes.

@ the ladies who suggested white denim: I have a pair of white denim jeans that were a hand-me-down which need a few adjustments to fit me. Since it cost me nothing (I’d make the adjustments myself), I guess I could try, although I must admit I’m afraid of using white in “large doses”.

About the accessories:
The silver/colored bag suggestions are nice, but I haven’t even got the basics covered where handbags are concerned. It is something I’d consider in the future, though.

I used to have medium-sized hoop earrings that I wore when I had longer hair. My hair is shorter now (and about to get even shorter soon), and I haven’t worn any jewellery in about 4 years, so I feel very self-conscious when I put them on now. I’ll try the look anyway though; the best part of YLF is that it pushes people outside their comfort zone.

How great to see you posting De! You're off to a good start!

I don't mind the jeans really, and the flats are adorable. I think you'd look great in jeans (would you consider white jeans for Summer?) with a graphic tee and a waistcoat too, or jeans (or clam diggers?) with a ruffly top. You could always add a bright coloured flat or (wedge) sandal too, and how about a different colour bag?

Add another vote for a darker wash jeans sans whiskering. I didn't even notice some of my jeans have whiskering until I started taking pictures. Then I realized they weren't too umm...polished and smart looking? I'm in the market for a darker wash and am saving my monies for premium denim.

Coming to accessories, I love the idea of hoop earrings. There are so many different kinds available, I'm sure you can find something to your liking. If you don't prefer earrings, my personal fav alternative is a simple necklace + a chunky to semi-chunky bracelet/cuff/bangles. Or, as rute mentioned, a great scarf.

Good luck!

My main suggestion would be to consider a jean with less fading. The jean you are wearing is more casual and fit seems ok but it is making the whole outfit look more casual rather than smart casual.
As for accessories - for a run around town you would look great in some hoop earrings. Love that idea.
I like your bag but keep an eye on colorful bags that show your style - a yellow bag would really make this work.
Have fun putting together your outfits !

You look great. You have a great figure and the outfit you are wearing looks good. Being 18 I'd say you are already way ahead of the game. Good for you, just keep it up. I love the fact that you are interested in looking more polished than alot of gals your age. You do have style.
I love the flats with the jeans and top. The metallic edges really step it up a notch.
I don't believe that everyone is an accessory person. Some are more than others, so don't feel like you are not doing something right if you are not the type to wear alot of accessories. This is the time for you to experiment with lot's of looks to see what feels right to you.
I think you look good in V neck tops. It is true that V necks are good on larger busts but I do not think it works the other way in that smaller busts should not wear them. I think with your figure you can wear just about anything you want and look great.

Hi De! Welcome to the forum.

I actually really like the jeans and the flats! They are very cute and interesting. You're at an age and body shape where you can wear TONS of things. I think you should have fun experimenting with different looks, necklines, styles, etc. At 18, I had no idea what "my style" was, and it changed a lot too. I tried a bunch of different styles to figure out what was really "me" (including Bohemian, which if you know me now, seems ridiculous)! I guess my point is to have fun and not worry too much.

For this particular outfit, I really like the suggestion of some hoop earrings. Also, if you want to "smarten" it up just a bit, I'd keep the flats (very cute with the black and metallic), and I'd add a white denim jacket over the top. I think a pop of white would really freshen it up, and make it more summery. Something like this:

http://www.jcrew.com/AST/Brows.....6xL9LhM5MA

Lots of places sell white denim jackets for not much money, especially during the summer. Depending on where you live, I would check TJ Maxx or Ross, or Delia's, American Eagle, etc.

I think you look cute. Your shirt and pants fit you nicely and I like the shoes.

I don't think this outfit needs much accessorizing other than maybe a pair of earrings. I have a pair of largish silver hoops that I throw on when I'm going "simple" and they seem to add just enough flair and interest. I don't think I'd add a neclace to that-- you already have detail going on with the neckline and button, and a necklace could distract or look "off"

If you're wanting to "look more put together than your average 18 year-old." try throwing on a cute jacket and maybe some fun heels rather than flats.

Hi De,
The outift is lovely and I LOVE the flats! Gorgeous and look perfect with the rest.
You can wear V-necks and round necks.. well with your figure you can wear about anything..
The outfit gives you a nice waist definition, you don't need to worry.
As to accessorize, I tend to be also too matchy-matchy, but with this colors, I dare to say: choose something bold, like:

http://www.monsoon.co.uk/invt/.....enecklaces

http://www.topshop.com/webapp/.....;langId=-1

http://www.topshop.com/webapp/.....;langId=-1

Or a scarf (fashionable and young)

Hi De!
Since black and metallics are both neutrals, they go with anything. You could pick cool neutrals (silver, pewter, black, white) or warm neutrals (gold, bronze, brown, tan) to make your outfit seem really put together, or you can mix them up.
Have you read any of Angie's posts on Smart Casual dressing? I did a search, and couldn't pull them up, but I'd recommend reading them. The basic idea is that even your casual outfits can be pulled up a notch with some simple ideas. One is a solid dark wash jean in a flattering cut. Jeans like that look much more elegant than anything faded or whiskered, and the right cut will make you look longer and leaner. Another piece of that smart casual idea is to go for a more structured top in a flattering cut/color.
I think that if you get yourself a new pair of dark wash jeans, a pretty top, and a silver purse, you would be rockin the smart casual look. I love your flats.

Hello ladies. I thought it was about time I bothered you with an outfit post! :)

I'm going out this afternoon to meet with friends and then do some errands/shopping. I chose to post this outfit because I think it representative of what I wear outside the house on a daily basis. (Don't pay attention to the wrinkled hem please! I only noticed that after the photo was taken...)

http://i595.photobucket.com/al.....G_6136.jpg

As you might be able to tell, I have several problems:

1. How would you accessorize an outfit like this? I'm completely clueless. :(

2. I've noticed I have a lot of v-necks in my wardrobe, but knowing I'm an hourglass that tends towards a rectangle w/ a small bust, I'm guessing I should start leaving those aside? I always wear anything v-neck with a higher neckline underneath, but I'm still unsure...

3. Should there be more waist definition here? I feel much more rectangle-y in this outfit than I really am. :(

4. Are these flats ( http://i595.photobucket.com/al.....G_6129.jpg ) ok for this outfit? I tend to be matchy-matchy, so I didn't know if black flats with metallic details would look ok with the other colors.

Basically, just give me any advice you can! I'm young and my clothing probably shows that, but I would like to look more put together than your average 18 year-old.
