I think you look so amazing in this outfit! I'm sorry that the cropped flares aren't working out, but I'm glad that you have some cropped straights that you can substitute, because this is really a gorgeous outfit and should be repeated. And I love the fuschia lips.

I've been off the forum for a few days, but I loved seeing your version of Angie's ensemble. The contrast between black jacket, spiky blond hair and pearls if terrific. It should be a signature look for you.

As for the crops --- I think you're wearing them well, but, like you, I'm very sensitive to silhouettes that aren't optimally flattering. I think it would look every bit as current with a straighter and slimmer cropped leg.

Suz - I tagged your comment as comedy because - well, you know why . (plus it's easy for you to say being the size your are) I DO NOT SEMI TUCK . Never have , never will. I look like Urkle or whatever his name is, when I tuck things in . I do not have a flat stomach, in fact I feel I look 4 or 5 months pregnant half the time and am not interested in highlighting it. I especially don't have a flat stomach, even when I'm not bloated and menopausal, in jeans! Added bulk with fly, button, etc - yuck. I am also short waisted and just cannot get away with a tucked in t-shirt . Again with Urkel or whatever his name is. But yes, I am far better off in cropped straights and have a a few pair of those. Just thought I'd try these again because it's such a hot-topic here on YLF. I hate them and am throwing them out:) I have yet to see more than two people wear them successfully flatteringly. Anyone want a pair of Pilcro Cropped Flares in a 28? Worn , oh, about 4 times.

Well, I can tell your legs are not the same shape as your jeans!!! I do think this look in general can be a bit thigh enhancing, even on quite slim people. I believe tapering tighter to the knee would only emphasize that on *my* figure, because I already have proportionately large thighs vs. skinny knees. (For example tube skirts have always been very difficult, actually impossible, don't think I've ever owned them even when they became the uniform of my 10th grade class in 1990). This proportion issue is definitely one of the reasons I'm not too excited about this look for me. However, you don't have that issue so I digress!
I love your version of the ensemble, better than the inspiration! It has more integrity somehow, I think there bubble pearls really work.

You knew I had to say that, right? But okay, okay. Get the straight legs or shorter skinnies instead. I have to admit they are easier for me to wear. Even the BR version (which looks like a flare in their stock photo) is really more of a slim straight with fraying at the ends.

I agree with all that it is likely the angle and If the tops were not both the same length, something might change for the better. But I do like the overall concept and trying to figure it out too. I haven't tried a 2nd layered top with my look yet. I'm still experimenting with "the right" one layer on top. It seems the high low look works with the front tucking to create it. Maybe tucking in the stripe top so the jacket hangs lower? I haven't tried the Anthro Jean. I bought the BR one just this month and it is fitted at the knee.

Interesting. I went back and looked some more at the pic. I still feel like there's some lens trickery going on, but what Angie says is true about them just being sort of wide all the way down. The flare doesn't come through as much as one might feel it should...

This post has been a real lesson in proportion and how to provide a lengthened look. Of course you wear this look well because you have long, slim legs, but it has made me firmly decide that as a pear, cropped flares have no place in my wardrobe. I adore your pearl ring, what a great piece to receive for Christmas 2015. You always look so polished as your hair, make up and accessories are impeccable.

I think you look fantastic.

I get what you are saying but I think it's a combo of camera angles and not being 5'11". I'm 5" shorter than you and proportionately I'm fairly average all around -- golden ratio and all that. I've concluded that most fashion models just have proportionately longer legs than torso.

Also I suspect the fading on these jeans could somehow make a person of average height (i.e., not model height) look wider than they are. White (fading) adds rather than subtracts.

I still think you look utterly fantastic in this outfit. Curvy in the best of ways.

Even on the store model those jeans don't look like the most conventionally flattering cut. That said, I think the combination of camera angle and zooming in on what you are worried about with your eyes are the biggest problem here. Overall, you look fab.

Just love this look on you, really! Your pearls are so stinking cool.

I've been thinking about your issues with the jeans and wanted to reply thoughtfully because I also own the cropped Pilcros. So I put them on to compare how they fit me. I understand the wide leg thing you are talking about. I do not think these are my most flattering jeans but they are my absolute most comfortable. I offset the wider leg by tucking or semi tucking when I wear them. I think that helps but maybe I'm just kidding myself? Also, I think I've only worn low contrast tops with them. I do have large thighs, weird inside knee fat, and large calves so maybe I fill them out more as Angie suggested. But I don't think they are stumpifying on you, I just think that's the look and maybe you are not used to it yet. I do agree with Angie that cropped straights/skinnies are easier to style than cropped flares but I love them just the same. I may shorten them for summer to get them to Angie's recommended 2 inches or more above the ankle. I've hesitated shortening them this fall/winter because I don't own high enough shaft booties to keep me warm. I did style them with a higher heeled bootie to go out for dinner one night, which I did like, and my SO asked me why my pants were so short. My Mom and I busted out laughing as she gave me the thumbs up, you look fab nod. I hope this helps.

(You KNOW who to pass that pearl necklace on to).

I tried those Pilcro jeans and they absolutely overwhelmed me. It's all in the cut on the leg. These stay wide all the way down in a "neither here nor there way". Culottes are wider and straight crops are narrower (but not as narrow as skinnies), which seems to be a more flattering cut on most. (I've had many clients in all variations).

The cropped flares seem to work well when you can also fill them out on the lower leg, in which case they become cropped straights on the wearer, if you know what I mean.

I do agree with Janet, that the placement of the wash is tricky too. If these were a uniform wash, they would look more streamlined.

My Express cropped flares aren't nearly as flattering on me as my two pairs of cropped straights. I wear the former with a column of colour and that's it.

That ring is just out of this world!

I tend to agree with you on the jeans. Either a straighter cropped jean, as Angie suggested, or one that's more fitted on the thigh/leg so that the flare is more pronounced after the knee - right now, as you said, it is looking more one width.

Lisa, like others, I am wondering if the angle of the photo is the issue here.
I like the idea of the outfit but I tend to think that a straight leg, not flared, might suit better. I'm also a fan of a lower contrast look with the crop jeans and agree the top might just be the culprit here.

Lisa your outfit post

Winter "crops" , sweater, high shaft booties and jacket . Winter in Manitoba demonstrated the flattery of a lower contrast when wearing a cropped look.

Ok, I've looked at this again, in light of my own experiences trying out this very same silhouette today. Is it possible the high contrast top is part of the issue? I started my ensemble with a white and navy striped top, but it felt like it chopped me up too much and emphasized those horizontal lines too much. I felt much better once I switched to a more tonal approach. Just a thought.

I think you look great and it could be the camera angle that is distorting things. That said, I think the crop flare look is a JFE challenge. I would go straighter. But YLF. Really classy.

LaP - good eye, and I bet you are right, thank you.
Angie - I agree, my straight crops feel a lot better. And I have loved these pearls forever. I used to wear them with a orange cashmere cardigan buttoned up , and jeans. That was my weekend outfit for a solid year I think. I bet they are a good 10 years old by now. Now, just because I want to understand this flared crop issue - why do they work one some and not on others? Is it a look best worn on super slim bodies/legs? I'm suspecting that's the issue but want to make sure I understand this intellectually, so I'm not tempted to buy anything else in this cut.

LOVE THE PEARLS. They launched me into orbit.

Try the STRAIGHT cropped jeans. More streamlined all the way down.

Oh, man, your hair! This makes me want to chop all mine off again. I love a spiky pixie look.

I'm not a huge fan of the cropped flares yet (probably never), but I will say that I'm with Aida -- it's not the jeans but the length of the jacket (and maybe top too) that's emphasizing your hips. A more cropped jacket would probably, to my eye, solve your problem.

Bonnie , Smittie, Una, Janet, Olga - thank you all - I do appreciate all of these other pairs of eyes. And smittie - oddly, I wore these quite a few times in summer/fall and liked them a lot. I don't remember what tops I would have worn over them, but today I was just following the "rules" of the ensemble and not thinking about flattering lines and lengths and all of that. I can only do one thing with my brain at a time And yes, the jeans with the hoodie outfit were most definitely skinny jeans.

Vivian - thanks ! I am liking my hair too - it's super short, that's for sure, and I just had it trimmed again yesterday because I'm travelling again starting tomorrow and cannot deal with high-maintance hair. It'll be better in about a week . I think your Pilcro success is because you have thin thighs, young miss. My legs aren't chunky or anything, but I have muscular spin bike thighs and a naturally curvy shape to begin with . Plus my body seems to think it's pregnant and is storing up fat for a rainy day. I am thinking these bloody jeans are too complicated for me with anything other than a longer dark asymmetrical hem top and high heeled sandals. They suit the gamine boyish body like yours - you lucky duck ;)

The pants look like they fit you the same way they fit the model so that's the way they're supposed to fit. I'm having a hard time getting used to this style and will probably go with the straighter crop to start.

I think you're not used to the look. I think these look great on you. Even better with a higher shaft bootie. ETA: I also thought they looked great on Alaskagirl.

Now that said, I do prefer the hoodie look you had going the other day. But I'm not sure if it's because the pants were skinny (I still have more of a sweet eye towards skinnies vs cropped jeans) or because of my strong bias towards plainer outfits.

I'm going to try on my bootcuts and see how I feel in them, because I remember having the same feeling of leg widening and feeling less good in them.

Just jumping in to say: YOUR HAIR! It looks fantastic.

ETA: I don't think Angie likes the Pilcro flares much either. Just wondering: do I have really fat knees? Is that why they work on me? :)

Hah ok ok! Then a longer top with a shorter jacket would give a similar visual effect

EDIT: Even a shorter jacket over this top would do it.
