Gennifyr: I dont think parabens are something everyone need be concerned with eliminating and certainly don't want to be an alarmist. I have been cautioned by my doctor to avoid estrogen disrupters so I'd rather not take chances, especially when there are so many alternatives.

I just want to point out that there is no evidence that parabens in cosmetics cause cancer. The original study that the media deliberately misintetpreted and sensationalized never said it and was debunked by the author of the published study a year later regardless. All studies done since show no link.

Inge, thanks! I will check those out, they do sound good. No synthetic preservatives is exactly what I need, and the list of other ingredients is relatively short. Plus the EU is moving much more quickly than the US to ban the isothiazolinones.

Inge: Thanks for adding to the list! Weekends is another brand I've heard great things about but haven't tried personally.

Vicki: The taupey plum is the colors of shadow I have! Hope you love it! I do think facial oils take some courage to try. Here is what Drunk Elephants says about the benefits of marula oil: http://www.drunkelephant.com/b.....a-word-yes

I use the sea salt spray as a finishing product to roughen up my texture. I was hair daily, so I can't speak to how it would function as a dry shampoo.

Thanks so much for starting this thread, Meredith, and everyone else too for all the suggestions and tips. I am following along with interest as I like the idea of replacing some of my skincare/beauty products with more natural options.
(Just ordered two Dr. Bronner's lip balms and the Avalon body and hand lotion.)

Peri, I just thought of Weleda. They have a small range of haircare products that don't seem to contain any of the ingredients that are problematic for you. I don't have any personal experience with their shampoos or conditioners, but have used other products (like the Almond Soothing Facial Oil, and some of the body washes and body oils) and quite liked them.

I've added a few products found on Amazon, but you can buy from their website directly too:
http://usa.weleda.com/natural-.....-care.aspx

Oh my goodness, Meredith. I am gobbling up these links of yours. I'll soon be off to check them out more. I think I want them all.

I love the idea of sans-parabens and phthalates and cruelty free formulas, too.

My favorite, non-smearing, long-lasting eye liner is MAC's gel eye liner, in dipdown and I've been using it for many years. I'm seriously considering trying your Evelyn Iona product, above, although black will probably be too harsh me, but I'll give it a go. I also may want to try the Han plum shadow, because the color looks so pretty with one of their lighter ones.

The Drunk Elephant serum would be a nice add-on for me as I'm not using a serum at the moment, just EltaMD day (tinted SPF41) and night cream and their eye gel.

I'm always concerned with the thought of applying oil to my skin due to getting any melia or clogged pores.

Do you use the Captain Blankenship sea salt spray as a dry shampoo on non-wash days?

Thanks for doing all the heavy lifting with this makeup and skin care review. I love reading about this subject.

Update: Okay, I just ordered the Han eye shadows and I pm'ed Evelyn Iona about shipping to the U.S. since it's a Canadian company.

I wanted to add that I have had very good experience with Tarte products.

I will probably not take the hair product recs...so many essential oils and super long ingredient lists. They don't have my main allergies but I see a lot of ingredients that could irritate hyper skin. Natural does not equal gentle.

Through this allergy experience I've learned that allergy and sensitivity are two different things. Allergy is an immune system mediated response. I'm not sure what sensitivity is or what the difference is...just that they are different. But, my derm has told me that beyond avoiding my allergens, the shorter the ingredient list the better. I know my allergies but haven't figured out the sensitivities.

Gigi: I agree about the John Masters. I like it but can't always justify the expense! I'll buy it when I find it on sale, otherwise the Acure works well enough! And thanks for the thoughts on makeup removal. I'll have to try the other oils sometime.

Peri, I suffer from the same problem with eye makeup remover. I've tried several, all of them natural brands. I currently use almond oil on a damp cotton round. It's not great, but it's the best thing I've found so far. I've found that almond oil doesn't burn my eyes. I use sunflower oil for makeup remover on the rest of my face, but if I use it on my eyes it burns. After I have all my makeup off, I then wet a washcloth with warm water and put it on my face for a bit and wipe off my eye area to get the residue.

Peri: I'm so glad some of these products will work for you! DE uses the slogan "If there's any doubt, it's out." Wish more companies would follow suite.

The Accure website has the full ingredient list: https://www.acureorganics.com/.....ampoo.html

John Masters is another good brand to look into for hair care: https://m.johnmasters.com/prod.....ampoo.html

Regarding eye makeup removable, I try to buy products that come off fairly well with soap and water. So first I do a thorough wash. Then I gently massage marula oil on my eyes. If the makeup is being stubborn I might run a q-tip over the area. I wipe excess with a cotton ball. That usually does it. Sometimes I will wash just my eye are again if I really want to remove the oil. I'm not sure that the type of oil matters-I use the marula because it's what I put all over my face at night.

Meredith, I've been checking out your list and some of the others, and your list looks good for me so far. The Target site doesn't list the ingredients of your hair products, and those are the ones most likely to contain the preservatives I can't use. Shampoos and conditioners are full of that stuff.

I don't know much about Drunk Elephant, despite hearing of it for a few years, but now I seriously have to check them out. Your link to the "littles" contains a list of what they don't have and they say right on the list they never have any of the isothiazolinones! That makes me want to cheer...an incredible number of companies that claim to be green and/or saintly (looking at you, Dove and The "Honest" Company) have no problems dumping their products full of the fastest growing allergen factors around without even recognizing it as an issue. The fact that DE includes them on their "we don't use" list just tells me the company is serious about being current with chemical news. Add to the happiness...my second issue, the formaldehyde family...is also on that list. As I said earlier, the other chemicals are too much for me to worry about at this time. I'm too busy just trying to find what I won't react to, to worry overmuch about parabens, etc. But if things are clear of those too, bonus I guess. I feel some shopping coming on! Thanks for the info!

Quick question...can you share how you use oil to remove your eye makeup? I'm having big issues in that area. I have tried both coconut oil and avocado oil and they just leave such a residue. They get into my eyes no matter how careful I am, and just involve so much rubbing to get them off it just doesn't seem like a good method. Afterwards my eyes are stingy and blurry from getting oil in them. Not that I've found a commercial eye makeup remover that both works and doesn't hurt me either! Right now this and shampoo-conditioner are my biggest problems to solve.

Thanks!

I'm hoping they are cruelty-free too.

PSA: Drunk Elephant will post their July 4th promotions on Sunday night.

Columbine: At Sephora they will give samples of three (I think that's right) products every time you go in. Just find an associate and ask for samples of the products you're interested in. Unless you're in the mood to browse, you may want to ask someone to show you where the DE products are located. My store only carries 3 of the products and I really had to hunt for them.

Gigi: Its a really lovely product and a little goes a long way.

Carter: I was going to mention that I recently received a sample of a lipstick that I liked. Suntegrity Lip CPR. Good color, long-lasting, SPF 30. It's a bit of a dry formula, though. Not drying, but not mousturizing either. You can buy sample sizes on their website: http://www.suntegrityskincare.com/lips/

Deb: I've heard good things about Tata Harper but haven't tried any of that line yet. Do you have a favorite product?

Carter, there is a line of lipsticks at Sephora now called Bite, made of very natural ingredients. They seem to get pretty good reviews. I got one of the Buttercream lipsticks, and so far I like it.

Meredith, I might have to try the French Girl lip exfoliator. I hate it when I apply lipstick and the lipstick makes my lips look dry! I don't have naturally plump lips, so I could use something like that.

Seconding the Drunk Elephant products Meredith. I love the whole range and the ethics of the company and purity of the products. The quality is special too, though it comes at a price. The entire Tata Harper skincare range follows close behind in my opinion.

I've actually never been to a Sephora, but there is one in my city. How does the sampling work? I've been using Paula's Choice stuff for a long time but a bunch of favorites are discontinued or I can't use them while nursing. Anyhow. My skin is in sad shape and I'm ready to try a whole new system.

Peri, I feel for you! My focus is on avoiding the phytoestrogens and luckily I don't have to be as cautious with the other ingredients. Not that the ingredients you mentioned are of no concern, it's just overwhelming to avoid everything (as you well know). I do think many of the products I listed are free of the things you mentioned. Maybe not the Tarte, I think they've got a bit of a reputation for green washing.

K.Period: Right! Good idea!

I'm going to be checking some of these out, but personally I don't care about parabens! I am too busy trying to avoid methylisothiazolinone, methylchloroisothiazolinone,, and all formaldehyde related chemicals. For my allergies, parabens are nothing compared to these guys. I get sad about all the things advertising paraben free that are stuffed full of major allergens.

Don't forget that Sephora carries Drunk Elephant products in some of their stores and they have a very generous sampling policy!

Columbine: If you're interested you can buy a set of "littles" to try all their products. The sample sizes are generous enough that you will be able to determine if the product is right for you. This is how I first tried the products and many of my samples actually lasted a few months. I bought mine during a Black Friday sale because it is pricey: http://www.drunkelephant.com/c.....he-littles
