Inspirational! I put in my vacation form... 10 days cross the West to Yellowstone and back. Family trip, car camping. All my gear is backpacking gear too, but I’ll throw in my cast iron pot and a chair... but should I do instead a camping bench that came with my Volkswagen? Lol. That is so weird, isn’t it? Why do I have a folding camp bench from Volkswagen?

Quick update, now that I've just gotten home and unpacked.

The capsule worked great! Everything got worn at least once, most things twice. My absolute favourite outfit was my green linen midi skirt and fitted black tank top. I wore it once with my mint green Adidas and once with my blush oxfords. White denim jacket as a topper. I do not have Angie's super power of keeping whites clean -- the jacket is currently soaking in Oxi-Clean. But I will recreate those outfits and post as a WIW at some point.

The only thing I missed having was a hoodie and sweatpants. Despite the outdoor heat, we stayed in a friend's basement guest room for a few nights and it was decidedly chilly!

Oh, and re: the puffin-watching, we had a great time! It rained before and after, but the weather while we were on the boat was perfect -- overcast so no glare, and no wind so perfectly calm water. We saw several groups of puffins, plus terns, guillemots, harbor seals, and a group of porpoise. The boat tour we went with has an Audubon naturalist on board during the tours to give the history of puffin colony restoration in Maine -- it was really cool! We have trips to Cape Breton and/or Iceland in the works for next summer, which will mean *lots* more puffin sightings.

Great capsule! Sounds like a fun and varied trip. It took me a while to convince my DH to car camp. For many years he felt if it wasn’t
back country, it didn’t count as camping! In the 15 years we’ve been car camping, we’ve added a little luxury each year. This year is a French press for real coffee.

Hah, suntiger, we are in fact doing a puffin boat! DS (who's 4) is really into puffins thanks to watching the children's TV show Puffin Rock. It's Irish and totally adorable: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3590338/

Elizabeth P -- I think the weather was the same last summer when we visited, ridiculously hot and humid. There's a good chance of rain Sat/Sun, or that's what it said yesterday. Puffy is perhaps a misnomer; this is a Nano Air. It's a smidge warmer and lighter than a fleece, and more breathable than a puffy (the back and sides are a sort of waffle knit). I upgraded DH's and my fleeces to these during one of Patagonia's big sales. I"m not sure I'd pay full price for one, but we are definitely getting lots of use out of them! And like Rachylou, I ALWAYS need a puffy. ;)

L'Abeille and Mainelady -- Yes, I'm happy to bring long pants and long sleeves even if they don't get worn as much. Like Angie, I'm better in heat than cold, and I like my sun protection. The hiking pants and long-sleeve shirt are super lightweight, and I like to have them for any trip where there might be ticks or other biting insects. Last year we did this trip in mid-July, and there were both black flies and mosquitoes. Oh, and tote bag is already stuffed in the car, so it didn't make it into the packing pics. :)

The funny thing about car camping, for us, is that we haven't really bought car camping gear. So we use our backpacking gear and it all fits into one large backpack. We got crazy this summer and bought a pair of folding camp chairs. Maybe in a decade we'll have a portable grill and a plug-in cooler. ;)

Style Fan -- This is our second time driving the Maine/NB coast. There are so many gorgeous places to stop, we have a totally different itinerary than we did last year.

LaPed, your capsules look great. I love the colors, especially for your town clothes. I live on the coast and it has been very hot and humid with the forecast for more of the same next week. It hasn’t cooled off much at night. I haven’t needed anything long sleeved for a couple of weeks. Since you are traveling by car, there is no harm in taking a few extra things, so if you haven’t already planned to take a tote bag, you might want to include one for your outings to the towns. Have a great time and perhaps share a couple of pics when you get back!

LaP, I'm getting highs of 26-29C for the next 2 weeks, and the coolest it gets at night is 19. So more of what we've been getting; I've been wearing sleeveless every day and not bothering with a topper, which is unusual. A few rainy days. But it looks like you'll get to enjoy the beach.

This looks great! I esp love your gear colours.

Funny, when I was reading your description of your “town clothes” I could see it so clearly in my head. Also a lovely capsule.

I’d be very surprised if you need a puffy coat. Humidex has been hitting the 30s on a regular basis. But if space isn’t an issue, I guess it can’t hurt, esp if you’re camping.

Gotta go check out this rainy forecast! Things must have changed.

Here's my capsule for a 10-day trip along the coast of Maine and New Brunswick. The trip involves a few days in town with friends (and at the beach if the weather cooperates), several nights of tent camping, and a short overnight hike staying at a campsite by a pond. It's a car trip, so space isn't too much of an issue. I'll be able to do laundry if I have to, but would prefer to avoid it. First pic is gear: two swimsuits and towel, two synthetic tops (long sleeve and sleeveless), two pairs of shorts, lightweight hiking pants, Chacos, trail runners, light puffy, rain shell.

Second pile is town clothes: olive chinos, olive linen skirt, grey striped shirt (very lightweight), fitted black tank top, white denim jacket, black cotton cardi, two jersey dresses, plus tee and floral shorts as PJs/loungewear. The blush flats may end up just being for the drive, as it looks like it will be rainy much of the time. The sneakers are for around town (I figure if it is raining, I'll be happier in sneakers than in sandals -- or I'll wear the Chacos). Accessories are all part of my newish pale capsule.

#3 is everything on a camping pad. I'm really happy with both colour palettes -- the black/white/olive for casual and the jewel tones for gear. They mix and match fine with each other too, in a pinch. Minus shoes and jackets, everything fits in one-third of a large suitcase (sharing with DH and DS).
