Jussie,
I can see your board and I tried to “follow” you but I think that there is some amount of firewall between USA and AU pinterest. I think I’d need a Pinterest AU account to be able to actually fill you. Anyone experienced with the technical side of this?

Anyway, this helps me get a better feeling for what you like. It seems to me that you like a variety of intense moods and attitudes, from very quiet and introverted to exuberant and outgoing. It seems like it’s the feeling of intensity that attracts you, though you’re not dramatic or flamboyant in the way those words are commonly used.

I think that because each intense look is what attracts you, it’s hard to think about integrating them together. And on top of that, there’s practical aspects to consider, and you enjoy being dramatic with pieces that are in themselves for the most part on the casual side.

Have a look at Vanessa Seward’s fall 2018 collection. I’m wondering if that’s the kind of something which is aspirational for your style. Would you wear most of her designs, if it was practical for your budget and activities?

Her previous collections have been more to my taste. At the moment Rag & Bone are on exactly my wavelength. I’m finding that I particularly like their flavor of irreverent pragmatism. I like things: simple, simple and then suddenly screwball.

3style: those finds are BEAUTIFUL! I’m sure they will sell out too. Yes, bohemian and romantic are very broad terms, I totally agree.
I’ve attached a link to my Pinterest inspiration board to better illustrate my own take on those words. My interpretation of them is definitely veers towards more casual looks, a bit watered down.
The board contains both boho and colourful romantic outfits. Maybe a more informative description would be “romantic casual” and “boho casual” if that makes sense.

Certainly not every outfit has to be consistent with every other outfi. I do think that you might benefit from some thought experiments in refining your style. For example, I was surprised seeing the sleek gold shoes and bag with the red sweater outfit. They feel to me more Hollywood glamour than colorful romantic. I’m not saying that it looked bad, only that it’s a bit puzzling, because it’s difficult for me to guess the feeling that you were attempting to convey in that outfit. Here are some alternative options:

What if you added the intensely floral bag and shoes, such as these Finds that I am posting below? How would it feel to be more intense with the florals, in kind of a Gothic style? On the other hand, what if instead you chose the simple blue bag with the pointy red flats? Those choices are romantic in a more retro 1950’s pretty sort of way. Does that appeal to you? Romantic and Bohemian are awfully broad terms, and it might help you to figure out what flavor you’re really after.

3style: aha! I think I understand much better now. You mean, merge the 3 styles into one authentic, signature look, using some kind of repeated element across all the outfits to tie it all together. At least I think that’s what you mean. For example, Angie wears a LOT of white. That provides a consistent element to her style. Katerina wears a scarf, tailored pants and jackets and a bold lip. It’s consistent, even though there is some range within the look. Mainelady wears quite a lot of bangles. These types of repeated elements provide consistent “anchors” for the person’s general style.
Your metaphor for MaiTai being a violin virtuoso is very apt. She is narrow in her specialty but incredibly good at it.
There’s no real connection between the earthy bohemian looks and the Care Bears looks. In fact, they’re rather opposite. Colourful romance is more a catch-all phrase I invented for delicate prints paired with strong colours. This can veer into both the Care Bears and bohemian looks. Or it can easily veer classic with say, black trousers, a floral blouse and a red ballet flat.
Thank you for being someone I can share my fashion obsession with! And being a sounding board.
Btw I think you should indulge and explore your attraction to the full range of coral colours.... why not?! You only live once.

What I’m trying to express is a little bit more abstract than what initially came across. Imagine you were a musician trying to get a recording contract with a major label. What would happen if some songs were Hip Hop (Care Bears) and some were Folk Rock (Bohemian) and some were Soulful Ballads (Colorful Romance)? If I liked your sound, I’d say that you’ve got to find your own spin on all of them, if you want to be the next Rihanna , Stevie Nicks, or Adele.... I’m trying to push you to the next creative level, not impose a particular style from the outside. In particular, in music it’s more obvious that while you need a consistent voice, (your wardrobe) you also need a dynamic range (the components within a particular outfit need to be a touch surprising in order to get a big wow factor).

For MaiTai, the wow factor is in the intersection of the complex scarf print and her particular tying of the elaborate scarf print. You’re right, I think to call that classic, in the sense that she plays very precisely in a very defined performance context. She would be like a violin virtuoso in my analogy.

I’m not saying that you should copy her and be more classical. It’s more that I see the potential for a very authentic and distinctive personal style. Not many people like both crisp Care Bear outfits and colors and also dark heavily textured draped neutrals. They both seem significant to your style, but there might be a category of essential items that integrates them and makes them more you. You could make your essentials conventional neutrals, like camels or denim. Or it could be something else like matching a bag to your shoes in a very disco interpretation of shiny silver. I don’t have any predetermined answers, I’m just thinking that you seem ready for asking yourself the tough questions.

Goodness knows I don’t have it all figured out. I’m attracted to a gelato version of coral this summer, but wearing it makes me certain that it’s a current crush and not part of my essential style persona. I was trying it out as an alternative to some of the dustier corals which I tend to wear, and have found that I’m not currently enamored with either. I enjoy a deeper brighter red-orange but have struggled to integrate it in the right doses, so it’s neither cute nor loud.

3style: thanks so much for your insightful comments and ideAs. I very much appreciate it.
MaiTai dresses beautifully, doesn’t she? So elegant. And her scarf and accessories collection is amazing. She is most certainly a fairly classic dresser, imho, quite preppy.
What I take from what your saying is..... reduce the amount going on in each outfit, and have more neutrals? Like, you mean I am disappearing under the clothes. I think that’s what you’re getting at. You feel the colour/size/texture is overwhelming for my 1) soft colouring 2) flat, usually tied back hair 3) size of my frame?
I’m dressing like a six foot two flamboyant woman with strong colouring lol. Hehe we always want the opposite of what we have don’t we?
I do appreciate classic outfits and they can be very beautiful.

Jussie, Please take the following detailed advice as my attempt to save you aggravation and spare your budget in the future; take from it whatever works best for you.

I’d like to start by saying that some of my favorite of your style photos are the black and camel outfits which are, I think, not represented by any of these style categories....

Part of my thinking about this isn’t just color palette, it’s also got to do with texture. I strongly prefer seeing you in uniformly smooth textures, with just a pinch of a strong texture thrown into the mix.

From my perspective, the heavily three-dimensional aspects of your bohemian outfits tend to look a bit like camouflage, and it detracts from us seeing your face or figure.

I’m including a photo from an artist named Nancy Standlee. I really like her work, and I think that it captures maybe some of what attracts you to what you are calling bohemian. I think that you could think about the balance of elements shown in this painting and apply it to your outfits. It’s the contrast between rough and smooth, rounded and angular, focused and disparate that make this a very successful painting.

In addition to the textural elements, there is a strong downward movement (eye travels from up to down) to Standlee’s work. It too works very well in this painting. I think you can include this downward element, but the manner in which you are doing it right now iseems a bit heavy handed to me. In my opinion, it needs to not overwhelm us in seeing you and to not just be seeing your outfit.

My impression is that you’re searching for some visual anchors for the floaty feeling and style of the Care Bear palette, but in the outfit pictured in 4-7, I think you’re going too far in the direction of: “all anchor and no sailboat!”

I would propose that you think about outfits in which you are integrating all of these ideas by anchoring the Care Bear palette in camels and black and denim. And I think that likewise the textural elements of your outfits can also serve as an anchor.

Part of the issue is that I’m not getting a sense of purpose to the three styles. I’m not getting a sense of why one day is chosen as a Care Bear day versus a why on another day you choose Colorful Romance. What’s different about your feelings or activities on one day or another which makes you choose one or the other?

I think that one of the reasons Aida looks so good in an all pink and floaty outfit is because her dark densely textured hair provides a built-in counterpoint to all of the soft and light elements. You need to think about what your counterpoints can be.

I think that the reference to MaiTai’s style by LTS above is absolutely brilliant for your style. MaiTai has a similar complexion and body type to you and she is anchoring many of her outfits with substantial tassel necklaces similar to the one in photos 10-12. She also likes complex and densely patterned good quality scarves, sometimes folded up tightly around her neck and sometimes worn in a more draped manner.

Clearly you love scarves, but I’ll continue in my devil’s advocate role here and suggest that maybe you aren’t choosing scarves which are really visually dense and substantial enough to ground your outfits, or perhaps just tying them too loosely and not defining your neck well enough.

I’m not saying that every outfit has to include juxtaposition in order to be successful. I’m saying that if you want to simplify your life and spare your budget, I think it takes careful dissection of all the existing elements in your wardrobe and taking a comprehensive overview and seeing what elements can be integrated into a more cohesive whole.

This is a great thread, Jussie, thank you! I like all your themes and you look wonderful and authentic in all of the outfits. FWIW, I have noticed that you are rather an eclectic dresser and I love it. I am still slowly learning about style monikers, various descriptors, and even personas and cathegories. When I thought I had it figured - dressy dramatic or retro dramatic etc., I started wearing outfits with some modern, avant-garde themes. To me, quite outside the retro dressy dramatic style. I like my avant-garde influenced outfits as much, though. Still figuring it out - what the unifying element is, and most importantly - does it have to be one....
I think you are doing a very good job identifying your themes and it seems like you are in control of how to use the different pieces across the themes. Anyway, you always create interesting, fun, beautiful outfits and you look great.

Suz: princess pointillist is a beautiful idea :). What gorgeous inspiration pics. Thank you.
Aida: yes, I get the whole-system idea. For those of us who like to experiment a bit I think it’s a better idea than a single moniker. The moniker is perfect for those who have really honed in on a single signature look that they love. For dressers like us maybe it’s a challenge of indulging in our eclectic desires whilst maintaining some kind of cohesion and, importantly, cost effectiveness.
Like the season: thank you for the complimentary words- I like MaiTai! She’s a scarf genius.

A good start for sure! I don't have time just now to write more but as an eclectic dresser I wanted to chime in quickly that I have a Whole System, rather than a single moniker, in place. If you check my profile you'll see I have an overarching moniker with a few major sub-monikers (which are usually a style+modifier that I like to pair most with said style); then some key features that I love which I try to include in every outfit; and lastly a word cloud of various feelings etc. I want to either feel myself or to convey. For me the overarching moniker is less of a catch-all and more of a quick reminder for those days when I feel something is missing or off, that is the Main Thing to try first and incorporate to see if that does the trick.

And FWIW I see bohemian running through many of your outfits CUTE outfits, too ^^

I see cohesion here despite the varied colour palettes...I am musing on it. Trying to encapsulate it in words isn't easy. No wonder you're currently using 3 terms!

Boho elements
Romantic elements
Classic elements
"Soft" or "light" summer palette (for the most part)
Feminine/ romantic elements....

Still thinking.

Okay. I think you are Princess Pointilliste!

Brooklyn: thank you. In fact one reason I have identified these capsules is precisely to help with finding the right completer pieces :).
Jenni NZ: yes eclectic matriarch is quite open-ended. I see so much bright colour in your outfits..... I feel like that needs to be part of your moniker?
Sal: thank you! I think it’s going to help me get even more enjoyment and cost effectiveness out of my wardrobe. We can’t have everything- so we need to make sure we are making purchases we LOVE rather than just like. I love each of these capsules :).
Sterling: thank you. You’re so positive and thoughtful!
SarahD8: thank you! I know you feel the Liberty prints too! How sweet are they?

I can definitely see the 3 different themes here. You can probably use some items across capsules and use your completer items (eg your jewellery, jacket etc) to push the mood one way or the other. I like that! It’s great that you have a wardrobe that supports a variety of themes and that you can choose a theme according to your mood.

That's Aloha Emily who is Gritty Pretty Bold. I always think she should be from Hawaii but she lives in Florida. If you checked her posts Jussie it might be interesting. I'm interested in your different style monikers here because I'm no longer happy with mine of "Eclectic Matriach" as I feel with that one I could just wear anything! I would like to be more specific, still musing. What you are doing here means you can pick whichever persona you feel like being on any given day.

Isn’t the first or the last time I’ll say it, but you really can’t go wrong with a Liberty print. Love that first outfit, it’s a really sophisticated take on pastels. And those metallic pointy toe shoes in colorful romance are fab.

I think it’s so interesting how you look really good in the Care Bears palette but then also those dark neutral looks in your boho mode really suit you, too. (I feel like it would be more expected for one or the other to really look right with a person’s coloring etc. but I genuinely cannot pick a favorite for you.)

I also see a bit of boho in the second Care Bears look (and, come to think of it, a little bit of colorful romance in the first). I wonder how you will wind up feeling about looks that combine two different modes. I am thinking of a poster here whose style is to deliberately combine seemingly contradictory elements in the same outfit (im forgetting the details but it’s something like gritty AND pretty). Not to say that you should take a similar tack but interesting food for thought. I look forward to seeing how this develops for you!

I like all these looks and I think whatever works for you (and your thinking) is the right plan. The goal is a functional, cost effective and fun/good looking wardrobe that you like wearing:)

And things change - both our tastes and the "fashion". There are some looks I am true to and then others come and go a bit.

Jessikams: you’re right- there’s a lot of overlap. I mean, the liberty shirt in 1 could easily fit into the colourful romantic capsule. But it helps me conceptually at the moment to think of three separate looks. I’ve always been someone who has a need to categorize everything!! I’m probably a bit odd!
Are you thinking of Mentos?

Stays: thanks for your wonderful comments. Yes- I think to an extent over the past few months I have been testing out these three capsules, and it’s been helping me to eliminate items that don’t really fit with my aesthetic goals at this time. I know Care Bear palette sounds like just a colour palette- but I use it as a capsule- because each item pretty much mixes and matches with all the others. For example, in the pics above the pink jacket from outfit one would go with the baby blue boots and necklace from outfit 10. And the scarf from outfit one would go with the jacket from outfit 10.... all the bits and pieces can intermix.
Soft, fresh and light sounds perfect for you! I can very much see that in the outfits you put together. Although I see you in some vibrant shades too!
See my problem is I can’t narrow it down to a single phrase... so I’m choosing 3! I agree it totally helps to have a conceptual idea when “on the fence” about a particular item. It also stops me from buying accessories that don’t fit with my main style goals. Helps to reduce general wardrobe confusion overall.

Becky: sounds like you naturally hav a pretty defined style- which is fabulous. You are less likely to get sidetracked by trying out every single new trend/silhouette/colour. I bet your wardrobe is very functional.

Interesting to see your thought process, Jussie. I wonder if some things cross over- like that beaded tasseled necklace is Boho in style but also a bit “Care Bears” in color. Eventually you might decide you are a “colorful romantic boho” dresser- OR you might decide some or all of this isn’t working for you, and on to the next!
Every time I think of your pastel palette, I think of those “mints” that are pastel in color but creamy in texture. Maybe they’re called butter mints?? Yum!

I think you're in a good starting point. Staysfit has provided lots of food for thought. I don't shop very much and don't buy much when I do shop, so I have a hard time getting my head around limiting my purchases even farther by applying a theme! (Though I know what I like and what is "me," so I am probably doing it unconsciously!)

Jussie, the process of coming up with style monikers and adjectives is one that should help you with your shopping and dressing. I think you should head there soon. If the three style personalities listed here will serve that purpose, than you are starting in a good place. The best way to know if they are working is to use them for a few months and see how they fit/feel. Do they provide an easy reference for adding to and editing your wardrobe? For example if you picked up an orange and white striped rugby shirt would you quickly be able to refrain from buying it by running these categories through your head?

Not all wardrobes are small, cohesive, or unified in personality. There are several members of this forum who enjoy eclectic styles, or who have several capsules within their wardrobes from which they draw. I think you have defined two capsules and a color palette, rather than three styles, although I may be wrong. Even with several capsules and a rather large wardrobe, style adjectives and style statement help to keep some cohesion. In my closet for example, I narrowed down the color palette to create cohesion, but I have a fairly eclectic range of silhouettes represented. I used style adjectives for a long time until I came up with a style statement that seemed to properly capture everything for me in a helpful way. Most of my adjectives call up features that work across capsules. For example, I use the terms soft, fresh and light. They potentially apply to all the styles in my closet except anything edgy, moody and dark. (None of which would be in my closet.). I only need my style adjectives when I am truly on the fence about a new purchase, and my style statement and thinking about my wardrobe goals does not help. That means that my style adjectives get a close review each season.

My style statement has changed slightly, as have my adjectives. My style has become more refined over the past 4 years. I sometimes have a hard time figuring out how to meld the creative pieces in my closet with the more classic. I am drawn to some funky pieces, and occasionally some boho pieces, but my style leans more and more towards casual polished modern classic, mixed with funky and fun elements. It all comes together when using a style statement.
