This is for leather boots. Coat the boots with Vaseline and put them in the oven set at about 150-200 degrees F. The Vaseline soaks into the leather, waterproofing it. It really works. I’m

I hear you, Toronto/Ottawa/ Montreal streets are murder on footwear. Kingston was really bad, too. The freeze/ ice/ thaw cycle is horrid.

I did what Carla does, pretty much, when I lived there. I also took a page from the forum member that Jules mentions. (Can't recall her name off the top of my head.) I wasn't working outside the home very often at that point, but I was spending a lot of time outdoors, walking here and there. And it was not as urban an environment as Toronto -- a bit colder, sidewalks weren't necessarily cleared quickly, etc.

So I faced reality -- for my walking lifestyle, I needed winter boots -- booties just would not cut it. I got some moto boots, combat boots, some chelsea boots with lug soles -- as well as a pair of genuine snow boots. Booties became -- essentially -- indoor wear. Or what I thought of as pure city wear. I'd put on booties if the streets were not terribly slushy/ slick only, and if I was going to be indoors for most time out of the house.

This made it more difficult to come up with outfits I liked, or at minimum reduced outfit variety in the winter.

In my current climate, I aim to buy waterproof footwear. It's just so much more practical. But if I choose unwaterproofed leather (like my new Ecco booties) I spray with waterproofing at start of season and inspect and clean after most wearings. We don't have to contend with a lot of salt on the roads here, which makes a huge difference.

I used to keep a pair or two of pumps in my locker at work. But not anymore, I work from the office only a few days now and for a few hours in those days I’m in.
I really, really dislike snow boots with rubber bottoms. I still have a pair of leather Converse that can take the slushy, salted streets. But I was wearing one of them when I slipped and fell. So, there is that.

Thanks everyone, I will purchase the spray and hope for the best.

This is why I only wear Blondos or rubber boots in bad weather ... because I can just hose them off and be done with it lol.

No great waterproofing suggestions but when I wore proper shoes out on dirty winter sidewalks, I would use a salt remover daily to give them a quick wipe with, and that worked really well. The particular one I had I can't find online but there seem to be many similar products ...

Once upon a time there was a forum member in Peterborough i believe who was a stompy boot lover and had a whole collection of stylish boots she kept at the office! She wore her true snow/slush boots for her commute only and changed there (and looked great)..

I mention it because it hadn’t occurred to me to leave actual boots for indoor wear, only shoes, which then presented style & proportion issues with my winter outfits. Not good!

Prepandemic, I had a pair of black booties with a slightly too-high heel for much walking that I kept as office boots. Currently I have shoes, felt Birkenstock Bostons bought specifically for this purpose when I created a winter capsule last year (I know you don’t love capsules, lol!). I don’t change every day it depends on what I wore in and my outfit.

I should actually treat some of my boots this year so thanks for reminding me. Will consult the suggestions above as I have no magic product list. When the snow/slush/salt season really gets going I wear mostly waterproof boots, usually in a type of finish that can handle a bit of white staining without looking terrible. Not refined, shiny, black… probably not your thing really.

I do waterproof leather using Clarks (before wearing for the season and maybe again during, depending on their usage/ the weather) but I agree that sadly it will only get you so far - I remember wearing wellies and heavy duty 'proper' boots for the darkest, coldest winter days of my commute (then I change into something more amenable once I get to work).

The streets are so covered with salt that I get salt stains even after a rain like yesterday I can’t bring myself to wear snowboots with rubber bottoms to the office or anyplace else, if I’m honest. I can only wear them on my walks.
I’m very diligent with my shoe care and use conditioners and wax products often. Hope to get them protected better more.

I spray all my leather footwear with waterproofing as soon as I buy them. Two treatments with at least 1 hour in between applications. Afterwards (a couple of months - when they look like they need attention) I ‘polish’ with dubbin or mink oil. Let it set for a day, and spray with waterproofing.

It works well enough, but not for long slogs through salt and slush. For that I wear ‘proper’ winter boots. I feel your pain, Irina. Toronto walking conditions are the worst!

FWIW, the mink oil does a decent job countering some of the damage from wet snow and salt and is worth a try if you think the footwear is ruined. I do treat leather purses and belts too, but lightly and polish hard with a cloth to eliminate ‘grease’ transfer, IYKWIM.

I”m not sure about faux products, however DS#1 has a pair of faux leather boots from Call It Spring that I thought were leather - they look so good - and they seem shockingly impervious to the worst conditions!

I am not going to be very helpful in terms of recommending products. I have learned the hard and expensive way not to buy winter boots that are not waterproof. I used all kinds of sprays, but none of them worked. I think the creams were the best. I remember rubbing them in.
I bought some wipes from the local shoe stores that wipe away the salt from my boots, but all my boots are waterproof leather.
The salt on the streets of Toronto is overdone. I just returned from there and had to wipe Garth's paws constantly. He refuses to wear boots.

I spray boots in the fall and spring when the weather allows, it to waterproof them but to make them easier to clean. I usually buy whatever brand is in the shoe section of the store when I need it and do not see much difference between brands.

I struggle with waterproofing my boots. On one hand, I do spray my boots, on another - I doubt it works.
So, I spay, let it dry and wear boots. But in this weather I need to wash them almost after every use to remove salt stains and dirt. Do I reapply? Or the salt stains that instantly appear on my boots are the sign that I didn’t apply the protector correctly?
Do you waterproof your boots? How? How often? And what spray would you recommend? I just finished mine from Ecco and I’m not going to repurchase it.
