Hi Angie and Fabbers,

How can I tell if I am a tall size in shirts and jackets, without actually going into a store and trying them on?

I am 5'6," but I have a long torso. I notice that some shirts hit at an awkward length around my waist. Thanks.

Paperwork is my mother’s kryptonite! All her life, she has let the men-folk in her life deal with household financial matters. When she became a widow, I did the tax stuff, and a trusted friend of my mother’s who did bookkeeping for a church, helped with the day to day - for a modest fee.

Last spring mom relocated from a retirement home in a Big City to a retirement home in the town where I live, and now I get to be her secretary. Fortunately, organizing and managing paperwork is my superpower.

Today was ‘part 2’ of tax time - ‘part 1’ having occurred 2 weeks ago. I knew I would likely be sitting on the floor, sorting papers - so dressed for comfort! Joggers, a cozy sweater, my new cropped trench, a beanie, and the LePliage to contain the files!

I can report that I was comfortable - and that the afternoon was a success!

Note: I tried to capture the ‘swing’ silouhette of the trench (see pic #4) but my outfit photos don’t do it justice. It’s styled to be oversized, and looks very cool in motion!

Chris987 on "Brands that do/do not have Petite Sizing"

To help me better focus my shopping this year, I decided to make a list of what brands do and do not have petite sizes. Hope it helps other too! This list is not exhaustive but it is a good start. It's mostly US brands or ones readily available in the US. If anyone wants to add other brands (petite or not), or correct anything I've listed, please go ahead - put your update in the comments and I'll update the master list. One final caveat - the vendors that don't carry petite sizes often have cropped/shorter sizes so those of us who are very short can often find things there, but they do not carry true petite sizing. For example JCrew doesn't have petite sizes in sweaters but they do have a few cropped styles. I have one of them at the fit is pretty good. I have NOT tried all of these brands myself. [UPDATED 1/18/26 to clean up the formatting]

Angie’s denim silhouette post blog inspired this…

I love jeans but I am yet to find the perfect cut for me. I’m fairly short, at 5”2, with a flat bum, narrow hips, skinny legs. I carry most of my weight around my belly, so my waist is comparatively large in proportion to my hip size. So when I but jeans for my waist size, the hips fit looks off. Skinny jeans are sometimes an option, but not a fan of the top heavy silhouette right now.

Not sure if the pics add any value but maybe they give some visual reference

Any suggestions welcome.

Hello Fabbers! Wow, it’s been a minute since I last visited the YLF home. I’ve just checked and the last post I created was 9 years ago. Holy moly!!!

So much has changed in almost a decade. Good, bad, good again. I’m almost 48 (and trying hard to come to terms with my maturity, lol), I got divorced, my children have left the nest, lost both my parents, found a new relationship and recent engagement, 46 kg of weight shed (110kg, if you count the ex-husband ), a few work situation changes. Wow, looking back, just so much.

With the recent weight loss, I’m finding myself in a space where I feel like I need to redefine my style. I’m just not sure where I am anymore with what I like wearing. I leave the house thinking I look ok, and then catch sight of myself in a mirror and I just feel meh. So I figured where better to try rediscover my style than here! Hoping that I get to hang out here a whole lot more.

A few recent WIW pics and a bonus before(or rather during)/after just for fun.

Star (Lise) on "Kibbe : Dramatic Classic"

Hello

I know some of you have an interest in Kibbe. I have never really given it too much attention as I found it quite difficult to figure out. Well I put in the work and did the assessment and I am quite intrigued. I came out a Dramatic Classic. All the info pertaining to this group totally matches the way I have always preferred to dress.

Examples are straight jeans (no wide legs or baggies), column dresses and skirts that fall either just below or just above the knee (I actually do not mind longer in recent times but have always found around the knee most flattering, not fitted but fluid, and no wide flouncy skirts, even A lines are not straight enough for me). Patterns should be stripes or fairly large geometric patterns (no ditsy florals). Contrast is necessary. What I did learn is that an outfit made up of two colours is my best and not a splash of many colours, I kind of knew this but this validates why I am 'iffy' about some of my outfits. Mostly sharp and straight lines, assymetrical hems, turtle necks or angular necklines. There is more but these come to mind.

I am totally sold I won't have to change a thing. It validates my preferences and will help steer me away from items that I am drawn to but then don't feel so fab wearing them.

Now I am wondering if I should adapt my Style Moniker? Maybe from Grownup Tomgirl to Dramatic Tomgirl? Would love your thoughts on this.

Are there any other Dramatic Classics on the forum? Any other Kibbe types who can chime in?

Carol on "Ask Angie: Mules?"

I don't think I have ever been able to wear mules--flat or high-heeled. The closest I would come to being able to wear an open-back shoe would be thong sandals, and I think this is because of the snug grip between the toes.

I asked my very stylish aunt why this might be. "Am I doing something wrong?" I said. "I have never been able to wear them, either," she said, "and neither has Hope," (my cousin/her daughter). "But Hannah (her other daughter) has a pair of baby blue heeled mules that she loves, and she wore them to a wedding and danced all night." I can't even imagine!

What would make some people able to wear mules, and others, no? Is there some kind of foot architecture I am unaware of??? Thanks.

I know it's much more common, if one is short-waisted, to have a short torso and long legs. But not me. I can fit only one hand between my chest and my waist, but then from the waist to the top of my legs is at least three more hands, if not more! My legs and arms are both short.

Does anyone else share these crazy proportions, and, if so, how do you dress for them?

Growing up in the thinnest state in the Union (Colorado), along with spending 10 years in orthorexic Los Angeles has always made me want a better than average body--something I could perhaps strut across a stage at an awards ceremony, for example (if it came up!)

I will always have that goal in the back of my mind, but I am coming to accept that maybe that goal needs to stay in the back of my mind until further notice. I will always admire the bodies in music videos the way other people admire the work it took to make an ice sculpture--it is a joy for me less than a compulsion.

That being said, I am looking at my body as is. Today it is not very bloated, and also I exercised recently, so I will have trouble showing you everything that I mean. I am strong and healthy, but still have a few pounds and a few flaws I don't want.

The flaws include:
saddlebags and hip dips
A stomach that sticks out (it is more noticeable in person)
large upper arms

I am interested in learning to dress a bit better to hide these flaws. Any season, warm or cool is fine. More veering towards casual.

I know that I could spend 20 minutes looking up this advice online, but thought it might be good to ask here.

P.S. I love the "think piece" on tunics from McSweeney's that Janet just shared. I am guessing that would be an appropriate clothing choice here.

Interesting article in Fashionista about the ‘Victoria’s Secret’ brand’s past and planned future.

I discovered the brand in the ‘90’s when I lived in a remote community with few retail options and VS had a catalogue I could page through (like Lands’ End, LLBean, and a few others). I actually found a bra that worked for me and a bathing suit that made me feel pretty good about my mom-bod. It was a chore to order through the US though (taxes and duties, difficult returns, etc.) so interest in the brand stopped.

I never watched the fashion shows and found the ‘Angel’s’ concept (like Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Ed.) kind of sordid. In an effort to leave no fashion stone unturned I visited a shop when they opened some store fronts in the Big City, but it wasn’t my vibe.

The brand’s provenance is an interesting story, and though I was aware of the brand’s importance in a model’s career (like the afore mentioned SI swimsuit edition) I didn’t know about the scandals or it’s tumble in popularity. (There’s still a store presence in malls these days.) I have to say I’m intrigued by the role Emmanuelle Alt will play in the brand’s re-invention!

I can’t seem to link to the article. I read it on the Fashionista page as a free article.

Have you read any interesting fashion related articles or books recently?

I was in Chicago right after Memorial Day Weekend, and my baby sis and I went to Second City to see the show 'Oh, The Places You'll Glow!' It was a comedy sketch show, and I laughed so hard, my entire face felt stretched out and saggy afterward. Highly recommend this show.

One sketch, in particular, has stayed with me: A mother and teenage daughter are shopping for clothes. They are in a changing room, and the daughter is trying on super-tight jeans. She can't even stand up. The mom asks (skeptically) "can you stand up in those?" and the daughter says 'NO, but the popular girl has the same jeans in that same size, and I AM NOT leaving without them' (I know I'm paraphrasing). She'll just stand like this when she wears them. Then she trudges across the stage, hunched over, and we all howled with laughter. We've all been there, done that.

There is all the classic eye-rolling, giving-mom-attitude, and cheerful-chirpy-annoying-mom-replies that just sets the daughter off.

But right in the middle of the dramedy of wearing too-tight jeans, following your peers, and next-level eye-rolling, the mom tells the daughter...

"Someday you will look back on this moment, and realize how great you looked".

The daughter is aghast. She shrieks, in that teenager semi-hysterical way...

"ARE YOU TELLING ME I WILL ONLY EVER APPRECIATE MY BODY IN RETROSPECT?!"

And the mom says "Yes!" in an annoyingly perky manner, and then they are immediately back in the rapid-fire comedy dialogue.

My sister and I were laughing hard right up until that moment. Then it felt like the wind had been knocked out of us. We both looked at each other and mouthed, "What?!" Minds = BLOWN.

I don't know who wrote that sketch, but talk about a moment of clarity.

Nearly two months later, my sister and I still talk about that sketch. We, and most women we know, tell ourselves that we aren't happy with how we look: our bodies, our hair, our skin. We feel lumpy, dumpy, invisible, not enough.

We've decided that we are not going to 'only ever appreciate ourselves in retrospect'. We want to enjoy how we look now. So we have both actively committed to getting rid of this negative inner-dialogue when we look in the mirror. We are changing our inner (and outer) narrative about ourselves.

If any of this resonates, I hope you will as well!

And if you're in Chicago, go see a show at Second City.

Waist stuff is still confusing to me.

I understand what it means in terms of pants, jeans, and other bottoms. A high waist is a higher rise, and the inches from pubic bone to belly button will be more, going higher up your waist. And vice versa for low rise.

But when we talk about "long waisted" vs. "short waisted," I still don't know what this means. I think it also has to do with inches, but attributed to your actual body measurements and length of your torso. I suppose I could look this up, but I think I did a few years ago, and was still confused.

Another question is, what basic silhouettes look good on short waisted? Long waisted? Thx.

Hello,

I am new to this forum I am Suzanne and I am 28 years old, nice to find this website. I hope I am posting in the right place

Does anyone get perceived a lot taller than their actual height? I am 5’6 and around 60kg but people usually perceive me a lot taller? I got measured recently at doctors and it came up 5’6 exactly as usual

Here is a link/post of my body, sorry that it’s not the best picture. What is it about my figure that makes me seem taller?

Sorry if this is a silly question I am just curious! I am new to the kibbe body types system, I only just heard of it!

Best wishes and thank you,

I have aprons at home, and an apron at work, and all have the same problem. They are a traditional cut, which means, I'm guessing, that they were normed on the bodies of male workers from the past centuries--butchers, painters, etc.

The cut of such apron, as I have shown below, works great for a flat chest, but is a nightmare for the female form. If you have a chest, the top fabric will slide back and forth across your breasts as each breast comes out the side and plays peek-a-boo.

I am of course, annoyed that this is my work uniform, and mentioned it in an anonymous survey.

I know I can easily find other types of aprons that work better for women...I just thought this was an interesting discussion point. Also, if you have any recs, great.

I'm having such a hard time finding petite dresses (besides at the regular stores like Loft, Ann Taylor, Banana Republic). They are really hit and miss for me.

I'm almost 5 feet and weigh around 100 pounds. I'm in my fifties, so I guess I would be referred to as "mature." I'm looking for dresses that aren't really short (to the knee or just below is great) and not too long because that style always overwhelms my frame.

I'm a little early (the event will be held in June), I know, but I'll be in search of a dress to wear to a semi-formal (not looking for a gown) but a dress that isn't a jersey-type material either. I need something in between. In the past I have worn a skirt and blouse, but I'd really like to wear a dress. I'm hoping that one or a few of you would know of other clothing manufacturers, stores, boutiques, etc., that would be good resources.

Help!

These questions were inspired by this post https://youlookfab.com/welookf.....st-2171385 started by nemosmom - on the horns of a dilemma regarding a pair of brown high tops. :-D

I currently own 11 pairs of (non sports/gear) related footwear. Some are ‘one of’, but others could be clumped together as stylistically similar (or even identical) but different colours. There is enough diversity in my closet, that I wouldn’t clump them together by colour - say like, all footwear that is black.

For 6 months I rotate through 6 pairs (see Finds) of which the sneakers and the combat boots are examples of same style/different colours and the tall boots and short booties are ‘one offs’. Though you could clump the black footwear together, each serves a different purpose, whereas the two pair of combat boots serve the same purpose, but can be switched up depending on my outfit and mood. If I was to buy more footwear, I would be inclined to repeat the style of sneaker or combat boot, but in a different colour - rather than seek out a different style of black footwear.

What about you? What styles do you repeat? What colours dominate your shoe wardrobe?

Hi all,

Just new here! I discovered this forum trying to figure out my body type, but I'm really confused about it. I hope you can help me out. Also looking forward to other styling advice on here!

So about the body types: I'm 180 cm tall with broad shoulders, small boobs, and wide hips. According to online calculators that still makes a hourglass shape, but I don't tick any of the boxes (not curvy etc. etc.).

The wider parts of my body are mostly a result of doing loads of sports. I used to be rectangle for sure (no curves, flat chest).

Now, my measurements are:
shoulders: 98 cm
Bust: 91 cm (small boobs, but relatively wide circumference because muscles)
Waist: 71 cm (>25% smaller than both shoulders and hips, but not bust).
Hips: 101 cm

Can anyone help figure out what type that would make and what I would need to look into for styling? Thank you!

Edit: I don't have exact measurements from the front at hand, but the ratio is similar to the circumferences.

You often hear about using shapewear undergarments to smooth out bumps but is it just me who looks worse in it?! - some bits smooth and then overspill elsewhere. For my, 'I've had 3 babies and ok, put on a bit of weight tummy', I prefer to wear a long vest under clingier garments. But now I'm wondering whether just ordinary cotton waist-high knickers would be good. Any one else have this problem?

Just tell me if I post too many question posts...

My daily purses are a black understated fabric shoulder bag with gold clasp, and a giant tote with a painting pattern for bringing whatever else I need around.

But I've always been envious of crossbodies, because I feel I can't wear them. They seem to look better on people with smaller frames, smaller chests, neater shoulders, etc. I have a large bust and wide shoulders, although my whole body is fairly proportionate.

Of course, I like the idea of crossbodies because they look easy to carry. In your experience, can less petite women wear crossbodies well? Or at all?

Maybe an odd post, but curious. If you have a higher rise, do you find you have a shorter, average, or longer torso? Do you find you have a longer leg and need a longer inseam than average? Would love to hear from all of you and how this has affected clothing cuts and such. I have round it really affects how I buy clothing and shop.

When I think of long leg with short torso, Natasha Lyonne leaps to mind, especially her latest Old Navy commercials. And that isn't really me. My body build tends to be closer to Sophia Loren. Lots of pelvic depth, but not necessarily a short torso.

I've always found I have a slightly shorter inseam for someone who is 5'10.5 tall. I wear a 32" inseam, though need a 34-36" inseam to have enough length for heels. However...I definitely have a high rise. The low-rise jean trend of the late 90s/early 00s was horrific! So much of my bottom was hanging out -- and I'm not someone with a lot of derriere.

I definitely need tall for tops, when possible. I feel I'm probably average torso, but the tall/deep rise kind of shifts me into long torso territory.

Totally curious what everyone has found true for them!

I never see high-rise pants for men, or articles talking about short legs. And come to think of it, I've never seen a man where I've said, "gee, his legs are short."

Yet women can have glaringly obvious short legs, that must be remedied by heels, high-rise pants, etc.

There must be some anatomical difference--perhaps the hips of women make this problem more obvious. Yet I've just never seen this issue addressed in men's clothing.

Carol on "Cardigan conundrum"

I have had a love affair with cardigans for years, but unfortunately now I'm coming to terms with the fact that many of them don't fit my body type. I am busty, and after just 2 minutes of wear, the front is going to naturally creep to the sides of my chest instead of hanging neatly down the front, as it should.

This has to happen to so many women, and I'm amazed I've never seen any fashion gurus talking about this specific problem. It's such a beautiful type of sweater, that when put on my body type, makes me look large and cumbersome. Even plus size models, when modeling, have it hanging neatly down the front (as if it will stay there).

I have tried:
fashion tape, to hold the sweater in place--not perfect
wrapping it over the front, and belting it--kind of a fussy process...
and that's about it

at this point, I think I'm about ready to give up on this type of sweater. Another issue is I tend to wear things like this, without reflecting on how they actually look on me.

I would like to look better in sweaters/easy toppers. What do you think would suit me? My parameters are:

warmth
ease of taking off and putting on
flattering
easy to care for
(pullover type okay, too)

(P.S. this is definitely not a "going out" outfit--just thrown together at home to demonstrate the problem.)

I've noticed lately on a few clothing websites, like H and M, plus-size models and regular models are used together in the same sections (shirts, pants, etc.) so that there is no mention of "plus-size jean skirt," etc. when the plus-size model is featured. Instead the item ranges from say, XS to 4X, without separating into "regular" and "plus."

I like this a lot, seeing as how humanity actually comes in a wide variety of sizes.

Hi. I know that I have a shorter than average rise, but at least in the stores I shop at the most, the belt loops on dresses are significantly higher than my waist. I was wondering how that is described, as it might help me understand my body better. Thanks.

Hello,

I would like to get your opinion about something !
I am talking about body dysmorphia and insecurities so I would just like to put a trigger warning just in case as I really don’t want to hurt anybody !!

First, let me tell you I have always been very hard on my body. I am really trying to be less obsessive and more kind toward myself, and somehow I made great progresses
Sometimes, there are some relapses though and I get obsessed about a body part

I guess I am posting again because a friend of mine made a comment on my body and that made me spiral into self-deprecation

She said I had shallows shoulders compared to my hips and now, my brain make me feel like my body has weird proportions (even though I find plenty of body shapes gorgeous)
I know these are just thoughts and I am working on paying less attention to them.
On a former thread, you told me I was an hourglass

I just wanted to post some pictures for reassurance I guess
Just to know that my body does not look disproportionate ?

In the mean time, don’t worry, I am really working on this with my therapist.
I have come a long way already

Thank you, please don’t be too harsh

And again, I hope I am not offending anyone …
