Oh Uniqlo! I moved to a city without a store and I miss it! From my observation, they carry a lot of basics that are essentially the same from year to year, especially the heattech line, Airism, cashmere sweaters, sweats, and puffer coats and jackets. You can count on them having your favorite basic items which is nice. They do interesting designer collabs regularly.

I have a few things I love from Uniqlo: Airism bra camisoles, all the heat tech stuff (including socks), and the smooth cotton t shirts (which last forever). I also have a few jackets and puffers but they don’t really make my heart sing, they’re just…fine.

That’s been my experience with Uniqlo - some great things and lots of basics that maybe aren’t that thrilling. Lots of neutral colors and boxy fits. Many many graphic t shirts. I think the denim is supposed to be good, but it doesn’t fit me. The store experience is organized and impersonal.

I do try to look online to see what designer collabs are coming up, because those can be pretty interesting.

Interesting about not being able to return online orders at a store . Why do stores do this ?? I’m looking forward to seeing what the winter knits look like , and I will take another look at the denim . There was a lot of it in the store and I didn’t examine any of it closely .

I’ve found Uniqlo very good for basics- tees, linen and rayon tops, and underwear. The lightweight puffers are great for my climate but might not work for your area. The collaborations are worth checking out but often skew young. I would avoid online ordering - convoluted and you can’t return in the store.

I def have a tomboy vibe, and the minimal, good quality stuff at Uniqlo is frequently my jam, as KKards says.
I have jeans, poplin pants (4, as they are easy wash summer staples) and some poly pants for casual business looks. I also have all the tshirts, lol, and a couple of fit and flare dresses. And buttondowns…
Never been in a store, so can testify that the returns process is annoying and expensive. But the sizing is not too all over the place.
I check in online for their new stuff and coming attractions about once a month.
The sales are decent.

So, Uniqlo’s target audience is young adults - university students and people in a beginning of a professional career. So, lots of practical, inexpensive clothes with some trends like cropped tops and wide, barrel leg pants. Uniqlo is well known for their great quality denim, affordable natural fiber knits and specialty tech fabrics. For our age group, there are still plenty of choices available if one is looking for good quality basics or an occasional trend to try. I put them above the Gap in terms of quality and they don’t try too hard to be trendy. The Asian market’s influence is huge in terms of colors and styles.

My store is definitely a self-service model, but everything is so tidy and well-organized that I don't mind. I like looking at their graphic tees to see what the youths are interested in. They're one of the few stores that actually carry everything they show online!

My experience has been like most others here. No nearby location so I have browsed a few stores when on vacation in Europe and done a little bit of online shopping. To me, they are very much basic heavy rather than style or maybe that is just what draws my attention. I am fine with that, although I haven't purchased a lot. My favorite purchase is a long lightweight down coat that I have had for many years. it is just right for between seasons and warmer winter days.

I will venture forward with caution on opening weekend, LOL! We have a local collab with Annapolis artist Kim Hovell - she has a large local presence in the home decor boutiques here. Cute style with lots of blue crabs and nautical motifs — not my style but nice for locals and tourists. If they’d do one in Baltimore, it would likely be a little more my vibe, but that’s likely to be pretty heavy on the crab theme too, LOL.

I always enjoy browsing in Uniqlo, we have the big flagship store downtown but there's also a smaller one at my local mall.

I find it a great place for the basics; Uniqlo U tees, heattech underwear and socks, merino sweaters, sweatpants, built- in bra tank tops, Airism UPF hoodies and I have purchased some of their denim too. Quality for the most part is decent for the price point. Some items can skew a bit cropped and boxy and many are unisex. Colours available tend to change each season.

I find that the staff constantly greets me with "bonjour" even if I just saw them in the other aisles.

I also like how you can just drop your basket of items into the self checkout area and it automatically totals everything instantly. No individual scanning required.

No Uniqlo here but I have been in Manhattan and Copenhagen and have shopped on-line. I have no idea what their stock pattern is. Since their products are generic (in a good way!) I find it fairly easy to shop on-line for things like tees and socks.

Without a store in my city, I have had a tough time learning how to shop at Uniglo. I did buy some linen shirts many years ago on a NYC trip. I think it can be excellent for essentials if the colours (or neutrals) work for you and also good for the collabs if you get in on time for those -- which is hard when you don't have a store nearby. The heat-tech stuff is great. The puffers are good, too, again, if you can get a good fit/ colour. If I had a store in my city I would probably make an effort to get to know it better.

We don't have Uniqlo here but I have shopped there in Australia several times and also in Singapore. I did purchase two items last weekend - a sweater in the JW Anderson collab (orange collared sweater) and an airism white tee. I tried on several sweaters and most were nice - and the pricing was fair. The colours were mostly not what I wanted as they were too cool and muted. I found the styles kind of a tomboy/minimal vibe which I appreciate but is not always quite my style.

My 24 year old son loves their clothes for workwear - quality and price are excellent. Both my sons are lucky for clothes fits as they are tall, slim with broad shoulders (I am jealous obviously).

kkards - yes, the price vs quality is excellent - from what I could tell. The items were pretty basic though - with the exception of a few pieces that were almost too avant gard for my preferred look . Or for someone as middle aged-white-lady-slightly-overweight as I , lol. I can see it as a resource for t-shirts, shorts, linen pants etc - but one can get those anywhere . I suppose this is where the price comes into play. Maybe it will replace what I currently buy from Gap, ON , etc.

Janet- if you want to maintain your sanity and self-respect, don't go on opening day , LOL. What they did do which I was impressed with, was create a little shop-within-shop of pieces with Winnipeg -specific themes/screening on t-shirts etc.

Irina - I did pick up on the "different environment " vibe right away. I was however, a little surprised not to be greeted at all - as in "good morning" or even just a smile and nod. But maybe that's their cultural difference in customer service? I saw a few of those CB pieces in the store (but didn't know they were part of a collab as they were mixed in with other merchandise. Cute, but not for me. Very sweet and youthful.

I pick up their free magazine - Lifewear, and study the mannequins in the store. I was interested in the colab with Ines de La Fresange they did a while back, and my new linen shirt is from the Clare Waight Gellar colab.

Last collab was with Cecilie Bahnsen. I went to try but it wasn’t for me. I’m not a frequent enough shoppers to know about new mech drops. I either go for a specific item or check online first. I took me a while to figure out how to shop there. If I’m interested in something online, I take a picture and go to a store. Sales people are always very helpful but you need to ask. This is a different environment, they don’t offer assistance unless asked. I actually prefer this way.

Interesting!

A new Uniqlo is opening this weekend at the mall near me — a pleasant surprise, since otherwise the mall has become less and less appealing (I cruise through occasionally, as the closest public library is there). I’m thinking of stopping in on opening day, out of curiosity.

So far the biggest, nicest Uniqlo I’ve been in was in Madrid. I bought two tops and would have possibly bought more, but I was on the way to start the Camino and didn’t want to stuff my luggage fuller than it already was. The stores I’ve visited have been well organized and stocked, but I’m sure a grand opening can make things a bit hectic.

The Banana Republic store in the A mall in my city closed 2 weeks ago, we now have no BR’s in the city—hard to believe. I’m hoping. Crossing my fingers that a Uniqlo will take the space. Rumor has it that other stores in that section of the mall were moving or also closing so the space would be large enough

Lisa I think with careful and thoughtful consideration you’ll find that Uniqlo has a lot to offer that fits your style/fashion plan. imo they offer a great value quality proposition, with fashion forward but not over the top pieces.

Thank you , Angie. I did notice how tidy and carefully displayed the merch was - and appreciate that part. There was a LOT of staff around, but not a single one acknowledged me. I am now invisible . There was also a noticeable lack of the most popular sizes - which I attribute to the recent opening which must have purged their stock . Most of the women's pieces I saw were in XXS and XXL.

Here's my 2 cents.

We have two HUGE Uniqlos in Seattle that are flawlessly neat and organized. Merchandise meticulously folded and displayed to the top of high ceilings! Impressive. Two thirds of the store is women's wear, one quarter mens, and the rest is everything else - including kids, babies, stuff, and collabs. And everyone shops in all the departments! Gender and age is fluid with respect to merchandise. Staff are helpful, friendly, and constantly neatening the store - opposite to Zara, where staff are generally unhelpful, unfriendly, and disinterested in keeping things neat ;)

Assortments change every month or so, but not a lot. Big assortment changes every two to three months.

Winnipeg's first Uniqlo store opened a couple of weeks ago, and it's apparently safe for a normal person to go in now , haha. I happened to be in the mall doing a return (story of my life) the day it opened and the line up was CRAZY. All the way around the upper floor of the mall. Do people not have jobs to go to? Or anything better to do? Yikes.

Anyways, I toured the store yesterday and while nothing really jumped out at me, I'm curious how the merchandise flows. Are new styles added within a season, or is it one big drop a few times a year? In other words, do I need to go back again this summer?

The store was far bigger than I imagined, and I didn't really understand the merchandising or what I was looking at - is it men's, women's or a general free for all? It was all kind of together . I'm probably not their target market, but there was a cropped boxy shirt in an interested tech fabric I liked, but I wasn't motivated enough to go stand in line. There were no collab pieces visible, other than a couple of pieces of the Uniqlo:C collection .

Oh that’s a wonderful story, I also love how the bracelet, handbag and even your ring seem to match. Partner’s reaction is fab too.
Does all this make you feel better about the dress?
Thank you for thanking us too, the forum is overall so supportive I have found. Even when we ask for constructive criticism I find this mostly kind.

The vintage bracelet and bag amp up the dress even more visually AND emotionally. LOVE - the operative word here - how it's all coming together, Cookie! :)

Kind of a bold color mix and I don’t have to do it, but this is the bracelet I usually wear to weddings, and a fancy handbag that was my grandmother’s or maybe even my great-grandmother’s.

(Bracelet backstory: My grandparents met on a ship in the 1930s when neither of them was getting any younger. While they were strolling around a port together, my grandfather pointed out this bracelet in a shop window and asked if she thought it an appropriate gift for a lady. She, crushed but unsurprised that he had someone else at home, said any woman would be thrilled to receive it and he said “Good, because I would like to give it to you!” They were married a month or so later and remained pretty crazy about each other for the rest of their days. She gave it to me for my 15th or 16th birthday and though she honestly was not the cuddliest grandmother, I have always believed she meant it as a wish for me to be lucky in love. So I wear it to weddings to bring the couple some of the luck!)

Carla, I think that is beyond my hair expertise!

I finally modeled the dress for my partner and he said “Whoa, that is not your usual color but I love it.” He swears it does not make me look chunky[er than usual]. I think maybe my issue is I wish it were a little shorter and the fabric had a little more body. I have many dresses from this company (Karina) and some are a substantial weight and others are not and you never know which it will be.

I do so appreciate each and every one of your kind and supportive words.

Dress shape is good, as is the colour and pattern. I’m not sure what’s putting you off - maybe the colour isn’t in your normal wheel house, or it’s missing the tongue-in-cheek humour you often bring to an outfit?

The Fluvogs bring the personality - but maybe it needs something more. Maybe a hair ornament?

More love for this dress, and how you have styled it here. I echo Jenni's opinion that if criticism of the dress makes you feel less than fabulous when wearing it, then a return is in order. I find it hard to not feel the sting in comments like that.
